Librarian files suit in porn case
The Associated Press Thursday, November 6, 2003 Arkansas City A high school librarian who was fired for accessing sexually explicit sites on the Internet has filed a $500,000 federal lawsuit against the Arkansas City School District and two former employees. advertisement Robert Hicks was fired in the spring of 2001 after it had been determined he accessed pornography sites on a school computer. He was reinstated to his job in 2002 after a due-process hearing officer ruled that he had been improperly fired. Hicks said he periodically checked the Internet to see if a filter to block pornographic sites was in use and what kind of information was available to people accessing the Internet on high school computers. "As a media specialist for the Ark City High School, (Hicks) was required to perform a variety of tasks," the lawsuit states. "(Hicks) kept up to date on library and Internet issues." Besides the school district, also named in the suit are former Supt. Jean Snell and former middle school librarian Nancy Horner.

Scholarly Research, Journal Cancellations, and Library Collections
For over a decade, the scholarly publications system has been in turmoil. Among other symptoms of this turmoil are reductions in purchases of scholarly monographs by university libraries worldwide including the University of Kansas and regular cancellation of subscriptions to scholarly journals. This has resulted in less convenient access for faculty and students at a time when scholarly knowledge has been expanding dramatically and competition for research funding has grown more intense. However, recent developments give reason for hope that conditions will improve. More...
