Gray County Courthouse The Arkansas River has carved a huge valley across the county. Inside this valley, the landscape is rugged, but by going north or south you climb out onto flat plains. The river bed is sandy and lined with cottonwoods, but it is often dry. It's hard now to imagine building an irrigation canal from it, but the river was much larger a century ago.

History Organized in 1873.  County seat Anthony.  The organization of this county was one of the most glaring frauds ever perpetrated in the State.  Attorney-General Williams, in his official report, says: "It is not pretended that Harper county ever had an inhabitant."  The form of its organization was legal on paper, and that is all.  In 1878 the organization became legal.  The county was named in memory of Marion Harper, first sergeant of Company E, Second Regiment Kansas Cavalry.  He was mortally wounded at Waldron, Ark., December 29, 1863, and died the following day.  His comrades say he took his death cooly.  When brought in wounded, he proposed a wager that in so many hours he would be dead; the bet was taken, and Marion Harper won.

Press Room Press Releases Articles Events LivePerson FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRINT Kansas Library Network Board Employs LivePerson for Statewide Online Information Project Librarians to answer research questions in real-time using LivePerson NEW YORK, NY – February 20, 2003 The Kansas Library Network Board designed this project to furnish reference services to visitors who seek information only or primarily on the Internet. The program, which shares resources among libraries throughout the state, will feature more than 90 librarians to answer research questions and direct people to helpful online and offline resources. Each online librarian will be able to handle multiple chats. "As more residents turn to the Internet to do their research, we look to expand the role of libraries in this increasingly digital world. LivePerson's real-time chat capabilities will help engage residents who would not otherwise contact a librarian for research assistance," says Eric Hansen, Executive Director, Kansas Library Network Board. "By adding a human element to online research, our online information service appeals to residents looking for information and librarians looking to maintain contact with community members." "The Kansas Library Network Board's innovative program demonstrates a growing trend in libraries that offer their services in real-time through non-traditional channels," said Robert LoCascio, CEO of LivePerson. "With LivePerson, libraries can leverage the Web to reach out to patrons who may not physically enter a library facility, keeping the library system in contact with the community."
