    At the light of early dawn flaming in the way,
    I would roll my blanket up, rub my sleeping eyes;
    boil my coffee in a can, make it good 'n strong,
    start another happy day with a cowboy song. Goin' home, goin' home, where the coyotes howl and cattle roam,
    goin' home to stay.
    Where the skies are always blue,
    Where the friends are always true,
    Goin' home, going, goin' home... yo d'lay de hooo....

    Cowboy Poetry, Anonymous We listen to winds over the grasslands: once through this country is enough.
    Diane Glancy, "Black Kettle National Grasslands, Western Oklahoma", in Offering : Poetry and Prose , Holy Cow! Press, 1988 The stranger [to Kansas], if he listened to the voice of experience, would not start upon his pilgrimage at any season of the year without an overcoat, a fan, a lightning rod, and an umbrella.

  • The Kansas State Historical Society bases its interlibrary loan policies on the guidelines established by the American Library Association's Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States
    and the Kansas Interlibrary Loan Code established by the KIC Council and Kansas Interlibrary Loan Board of Directors (KILBD). Borrowing libraries are referred to these resources for additional information. In addition, the following policies are in place for all loans from the collections at the Kansas State Historical Society. Borrowing Library Responsibilites Both the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States and the Kansas Interlibrary Loan Code stipulate that the borrowing libraries are responsible for the safe use and return of ILL items. Borrowing libraries should submit requests on ALA interlibrary loan forms (via mail or fax), or via the KICNET system (KICNET available to Kansas libraries only). At this time we do not accept requests via the OCLC system or via the internet. Borrowing libraries should provide accurate citations to the items requested, including reel numbers. Whenever possible, KSHS staff will make an effort to determine the reel requested, but may be unable to do so if there is inadequate information provided by the requestor. Requests with incomplete citations may be unable to be filled, and may be returned to the requestor for additional information. See examples of commonly requested items later in this document for guidance on citations.

    Kansas Disaster Recovery Assistance Network
    KDRAN is a statewide network that was developed under the goals of the Kansas Preservation Plan. In 1993, the Preservation Committee of the Kansas Library Network Board called for the creation of the Kansas Information and Records Preservation Council (KIRPC), which would be responsible for the implementation and completion of the other goals and objectives in the Kansas Preservation Plan with KDRAN being part of Goal 6. KDRAN performs several important functions for libraries, archives, and museums. First, KDRAN encourages institutions to develop their own disaster plans and to practice disaster prevention methods. To attain these ends, KDRAN provides Kansas institutions with access to a library of disaster planning, preparedness, and recovery resources. Lastly, in the event of a disaster, KDRAN will aid fellow institutions in their immediate recovery. Wynar donates 11,000 volumes to University of Kansas Libraries LAWRENCE, Kansas - In summer 1999 the University of Kansas Libraries received an impressive gift of over 11,000 volumes from the private library of Bohdan S. Wynar of Englewood, Colo. The collection focuses on Ukrainian studies with an emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. The University Libraries have excellent Ukrainian collections, the core of which were built by Michael Palij who retired as Slavic Bibliographer in the early 1980s. The Wynar collection fills the university's gaps in the late Soviet period. Mr. Wynar is the founder and chief executive officer of Libraries Unlimited, a publishing firm specializing in library and information science. Born in Lviv, he came to the United States in 1950 after earning degrees in economics and political science. In 1958 he earned an M.A. in library science from the University of Denver. He has been a professor of library science and was dean of the State University of New York School of Library and Information Science. Mr. Wynar has published extensively in the fields of library science and Ukrainian library history and bibliography. Maria Carlson, director of the Center for Russian and East European Studies, noted that "the donation of Mr. Wynar's collection to the University of Kansas Libraries represents a significant step towards meeting the center's goal of enhancing Ukrainian studies in this country."

Roseanne Goble has served as the Director of the Dodge City Public Library and the Southwest Kansas Library System since 1998. She has also worked as the consultant for that system as well as a children's librarian. She will direct KLA from their new office in the Topeka/Shawnee County Public Library. Prior to this, the organization's administrative functions were handled by contract with the Hutchinson Public Library. The College and University Library Section (CULS) conference will be held October 10-11 at the Holidome in Salina. The theme for this year's event is "The Art of Change through Collaboration, Unity, Learning, and Service." The program includes the preconference "Collection Development Using Vendor Databases and Services" and a keynote address by Dr. Jerry Niebaum, Planning Coordinator for the KAN-ED Project on "The Future Has Changed: Challenges for Higher Education." The Kansas State Library has launched a new project on library services to seniors. It will target those in their 50's-70's who are still active and vigorous as well as those who have had their health and lifestyle affected by old age. Tentative plans call for the project to canvass libraries for existing services geared toward older patrons and to create a website that will include active links to information and resources that librarians can access to better serve seniors. Plans also call for a preconference at Triconference 2004 as well as other training events as requested by individual libraries and systems.
