Holy hotcakes! Study finds Kansas flatter than pancake
By Terry Rombeck , Journal-World Sunday, July 27, 2003 Turns out Kansas really is flatter than a pancake scientifically speaking. advertisement Travelers enduring the trip across the western half of Kansas have long suspected the geography is flatter than that of a griddle cake. Now there's mathematical proof. A team of scientists from Southwest Texas State University and Arizona State University recently published an article in which researchers analyzed the geography both of the state and that of a pancake purchased at International House of Pancakes. "Simply put, our results show that Kansas is considerably flatter than a pancake," they wrote. The results, published in the tongue-in-cheek Annals of Improbable Research, have created a flapjack flap among geologists and others in Kansas. "My guess is you could put Colorado in there, the way they're calculating it, and it would be flatter than a pancake," said Lee Allison, director of the Kansas Geological Survey. "I think this is part of a vast breakfast food conspiracy to denigrate Kansas. It's a cheap shot."

, who used spectrographic techniques to do a comparison of apples and oranges.
    Materials and Methods
We purchased a well-cooked pancake from a local restaurant, the International House of Pancakes , and prepared it for analysis by separating a 2-cm wide sample strip that had not had time to desiccate. We collected macro-pancake topography through digital image processing of a pancake image and ruler for scale calibration (see Figure 2).
Figure 2 . Pancake cross-sectional surface being digitized.
Figure 3. When viewed at a scale of 50 mm, a pancake appears more rugged than the Grand Canyon. We measured a west-east profile across Kansas taken from merged 1:250,000 scale digital elevation model (DEM) data from the United States Geological Survey. In general, the spacing between adjacent elevation points on the landscape transects was approximately 90 meters. We extracted surface transects and flatness estimates from the Kansas and pancake DEM data using a geographic information system.

Cost-Benefit Analysis for Geographic Information System

    (Literature Review)
Submitted to Bruce Oswald Chair of the NYS GIS Coordinating Body by Eliane Silva March 4, 1998
GIS Success Stories A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an electronic information system that analyzes, integrates, and displays information based on geography. GIS systems have powerful visual display capabilities that present the results of analysis on maps on a wide variety of scales, ranging from very large (accurate to within inches) to very small (accurate only in broad overview). GIS is regarded as the best technology to understand and solve problems associated with government information which has a geographic dimensiona street address, a transportation corridor, a river, a city line. Some examples of how GIS has been used to increase government efficiency are:
    • In 1995, the city of Philadelphia (CA) used GIS to optimize their garbage truck routes. In the following year the city saved over $1 million in overtime. (Koutnik, 5) The state of Wyoming used its GIS to audit the mass appraisal process and found that approximately 250,000 parcels were not on the tax rolls. (6)
