Osage County, Kansas
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Osage County is a county Originally, the county was the land under the jurisdiction of a count (in Great Britain, an earl, though the original earldoms covered larger areas) by reason of that office. The term has since tended to represent a geographical unit of administration intermediate between the larger state or province, and the smaller township, municipality or district. However it can also be used to mean a geographic area, and this can generate much confusion, especially when boundaries used by government or postal deliveries change or do not coincide.

Geography of Kansas, GE 333
Fall Semester 2000.
What do you think of when you read “the Geography of Kansas ”? Maybe it’ll be a pretty short class? What geography is there to study in the flat state”? This class will examine the historical geography of the state: settlement patterns from the earliest residents back in the last ice age, contact between the first settlers and those of European descent who came later, and the impact of all these people on the environment around them. We’ll look at how things in Kansas have changed over time to get us to where we are now. I’m hoping we’ll do some field trips to see first hand how things have changed in Lyon and Chase Counties, how economic development has affected population growth and distribution, how the increasing diversity of the state’s population is changing Emporia and other Kansas communities, and how urban growth is affecting the state’s relationship to the rest of the Great Plains and the U.S. in general. In October 2000, ESU will host the Flint Hills Regional Environmental Colloquium , and students will have a chance to hear local community leaders and invited academics discuss and debate these issues.

Kansas water-use trends reflect geography, weather, and population
June 1999
U.S. Water News Online LAWRENCE, Kan. Kansans used less water in 1995 than in 1990 for public supplies, irrigation, and industrial purposes, even as overall population increased. Meanwhile, more water was used for livestock during 1995. A newly released fact sheet, prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Kansas Water Office (KWO) and funded in part through the State Water Plan Fund, examines population and water-use data for 1990 and 1995 and offers explanations for variations among uses, years, and areas of the state. Withdrawals from ground and surface sources are illustrated for the largest categories of use in Kansas public supply, irrigation, industrial and mining, livestock, and thermoelectric power generation. Comparative data are presented for each of 12 major river basins to illustrate differences in population distribution, water-supply availability, and degree of industrial and agricultural activities in Kansas. About 87 percent of total annual nonpower-related withdrawals in Kansas are for irrigation. Most irrigation use is from groundwater sources in the western part of the state, which is underlain by the High Plains aquifer. All basins where irrigation is a significant use of water showed less use in 1995 than in 1990. About 21 percent less groundwater was used for irrigation in 1995 than in 1990, when drier weather prevailed. Statewide, about 15 percent more surface water was used for irrigation in 1995 than in 1990.

Transfer Course Equivalencies
Updated January 2004 Following is a list of current course equivalents between Kansas State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; credit at NU is stated in semester hours. If a specific UNL course equivalent has not been identified, other notations are used.
  • GNCR; course transfers as UNL general hours
  • SUBJ; course transfers as subject area hours (e.g., ENGLXXX, MATHXXX) not assigned to a specific course
  • NDAP; excess transfer course hours which are included in the equivalency and generally not degree-applicable
  • VCRD; vocational/skill development course: limited application to a UNL degree
  • HSCR; course is high school or remedial level; hours and course do not transfer
Contact your NU college to determine whether a course will be applicable to your intended major. While every effort is made to keep this list up to date, courses may be added or deleted at any time. Courses not listed may also be transferable and degree applicable. Equivalencies are date-specific and dependent upon when the course was taken. Equivalencies no longer in effect are not included in the list, but will be included in NU's evaluation of transfer credit if taken during the period the equivalency was in effect. In some cases, two or more transfer courses may be needed to achieve the equivalent of a UNL course. For an official evaluation of transfer credits, students are encouraged to apply for admission to NU, and submit complete high school and post-secondary transcripts. Begin your search for courses by selecting one of Kansas State University's subject abbreviations:

Kansas - Geography Midwestern state occupying the center of the coterminous United States. It is bordered by Missouri (E), Oklahoma (S), Colorado (W), and Nebraska (N). Almost rectangular in shape and mostly part of the Great Plains , Kansas is famous for its seemingly endless fields of ripe golden wheat. The land rises more than 3,000 ft (914 m) from the eastern alluvial prairies of Kansas to its western semiarid high plains, which stretch toward the foothills of the Rocky Mts. The rise is so gradual, however, that it is imperceptible, although the terrains of the east and the west are markedly different. The state is drained by the Kansas and Arkansas rivers, both of which generally run from west to east. Topeka is the capital; other important cities are Wichita (the largest city in the state), Lawrence, and Kansas City (adjoining Kansas City, Mo.). Points of historical interest in Kansas include the boyhood home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Eisenhower Library in Abilene. In Medicine Lodge is the home of Carry Nation, who, at the turn of the century, became convinced of her divine appointment to destroy the saloons; her home there is now a museum. Fort Leavenworth is the site of a large Federal penitentiary.
