L
ast week's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center will force companies to rethink how they are organized, said Joel Kotkin , a writer who studies how the technology revolution is changing American cities. Kotkin , who wrote The New Geography: How the Digital Revolution Is Reshaping the American Landscape, spoke Thursday morning at a breakfast sponsored by the New Economy Council of Greater Kansas City. The organization was formed by the Kansas City Area Development Council to attract technology companies and workers to the area. The Sept. 11 attack on New York's tallest building will cause many companies to look at dispersing employees and executives to a variety of locations, Kotkin said. "We are going to see new ways of managing risk," he said. "You are going to have to think about: Are you going to risk putting your complete intellectual capital in one building?" The terrorist attacks may accelerate a technology-driven trend already under way in the United States, Kotkin said. The Internet and sophisticated telecommunications networks are allowing companies to reorganize. Companies no longer have to be headquartered in a major city and have workers in central locations.

INTRODUCTION Welcome my fellow geographers! With vast improvements and technological advances on the information superhighway, it has become difficult to track down information. This page is designed to help eliminate confusion by serving as a central location for linking you to various geography web pages. I will first briefly introduce myself and discuss my current research interests. If you are interested in learning a new topic, I have posted links from various branches of geography and academic journals. For those who are looking for government agency websites or ways to download census and GIS data there are plenty of links to choose from. If you are looking for daily news or current events, there are several links posted. At last, for those who are interested in looking for jobs in geography there are links posted to assist you with your search.

Cost-Benefit Analysis for Geographic Information System
Implementation Justification
(Literature Review)
Submitted to Bruce Oswald Chair of the NYS GIS Coordinating Body by Eliane Silva March 4, 1998
GIS Success Stories A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an electronic information system that analyzes, integrates, and displays information based on geography. GIS systems have powerful visual display capabilities that present the results of analysis on maps on a wide variety of scales, ranging from very large (accurate to within inches) to very small (accurate only in broad overview). GIS is regarded as the best technology to understand and solve problems associated with government information which has a geographic dimensiona street address, a transportation corridor, a river, a city line. Some examples of how GIS has been used to increase government efficiency are:
  • In 1995, the city of Philadelphia (CA) used GIS to optimize their garbage truck routes. In the following year the city saved over $1 million in overtime. (Koutnik, 5) The state of Wyoming used its GIS to audit the mass appraisal process and found that approximately 250,000 parcels were not on the tax rolls. (6)

The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery
