For four decades the work has expanded. Associated with the intervention mission is a continuing effort to improve state and national service delivery systems so persons with disabilities can continue to move away from living in large, segregated institutions toward inclusive living environments that more closely resemble family life.

How does the program work?
The upfront cash requirement needed to buy a house is one of the largest obstacles to purchasing your own home. The Kansas Local Government Statewide Homeownership Program is designed to overcome this barrier. The Program provides mortgage loan financing at a competitive interest rate plus a cash grant equal to 4% of the loan amount. The grant can be applied to the down payment and closing costs that cannot be financed. Because the Program’s 4% cash assistance is a grant – it does

Family values, poor children, and welfare reform are all hot topics in our society today. The Family Studies Program offers educational opportunities to students, human service personnel in both the public and not-for-profit sectors, as well as the general public to enhance understanding of the state of American families.
What is Family Studies? Family Studies is an interdisciplinary, academic discipline which explores the many facets of families themselves as well as societal trends such as the aging population, economic changes and public policies - to name just a few - which influence families. Sociology, psychology, history, economics, and communications studies are just a few of the disciplines which contribute to our knowledge of families. The UMKC Family Studies Program focuses primarily on the situation of American families and the social services organizations which serve them.

KAFP-Foundation Programs
Endowed Professorships in Family Medicine
Through the Kansas University endowment Association there is a campaign to raise the seed money for endowed professorships in Family Medicine on each campus. The KAFP and the KAFP-Foundation each have pledged $10,000 per year to this campaign, when funds are available. An endowed professorship offers many benefits to family medicine education. It sends a message to the administration of the University and to the legislature of Kansas. The message is one of support for family medicine and the general support we receive from the public. It provides funding to the Department of Family Medicine that is much needed. It lends clout to the Departments of Family Medicine from the standpoint of other university departments. You can donate to this campaign to the KAFP- Foundation or directly to the KU Endowment Association, by contacting Jim Brandmeyer at the KUEA. Ph. 913-588-5230 jbrandmeyer@kuendowment.org Summer Rural research program Each year about 35 medical students between their first and second year participate in the Kansas summer rural research program please correct the title of this program). The KAFP- Foundation initiated the program. It is currently partially funded by the foundation. We are also extremely grateful to have a generous contribution from the Baker Trust, LaCrosse, Kansas. Volunteer physicians from rural settings throughout the state contribute their time and supply housing to these medical students. Medical students gather research data and share a variety of medical experiences in rural settings. They receive a stipend for the summer. This program is highly acclaimed by all involved. There are often many more students interested than there are funds available. Your contribution to this program supports primary research and family medicine. Current co-directors are Dr. Allen Greiner and Dr. Michael Kennedy.

  • Students and families are matched for a period of up to one academic year.  Although the relationship may continue well beyond that year, we hope families will make themselves available to another student at the end of that period. Families and students are asked to make contact at least once each month.  It may be only to inquire about health and well-being, or it may be for an invitation.  Keep in contact with your family to show you are interested in them. The thought is the important thing.  This will also give you the opportunity to practice your English skills. Religion and religious institutions constitute an important aspect of our culture in the United States, which you should have an opportunity to learn about and observe if you so wish.  If your Friendship Family invites you to attend religious services with them, particularly during holidays, go only if you feel comfortable.  When you have questions regarding religion, we strongly encourage an open discussion.  The policy of the Friendship Family Program, in accordance with NAFSA: Association of International Educators policy, is that proselytizing (or recruiting) must not be carried out. Suggested activities for students and families to get together might include children’s birthday parties, school activities, sports events, lectures, and special holiday celebrations.

The Federal and Other Grants Program also offers training opportunities. The program supports the Annual Crime Victims’ Rights Conference that is held each year and hosted by the Governor and the Attorney General. This is a two-day conference designed to help those working with crime victims. It offers a wide range of workshops regarding Kansas victim assistance programs and national speakers and is funded by the Federal Victims of Crime Act grant. Every crime victim deserves to receive the best possible service and to be provided with information about the crime committed against him or her. No matter where crime takes place, qualified and trained people should be available to assist victims and their families. Every advocate should have a basic understanding of the laws, services and resources available to help victims of crime. Building Advocacy Skills, Information and Knowledge (B.A.S.I.K.) is an intensive five-day training course designed to provide a basic foundation for providing victim assistance in Kansas. This training is offered every year during the first week in June and funds are provided by the Federal Victims of Crime Act Victim Assistance Grant. Grant funds are provided to a number of agencies that have developed training on a variety of issues. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation receives grant funds to provide training to law enforcement on the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System, the Kansas Incident Based Reporting System and the Kansas Law Enforcement Intelligence Network. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office provides statewide trainings to public safety personnel on the proper usage and storage of explosives and inspection of explosive sites. The Shawnee Regional Prevention and Recovery Services received grant funds to expand its Kansas Methamphetamine Prevention Project, which provides statewide training to address the methamphetamine issues in Kansas.
