Ivanhoe International Center Rapid City, South Dakota WELCOME * VELKOMMEN * TOOLI Friendship Family Program and National American University

  • Students and families are matched for a period of up to one academic year.  Although the relationship may continue well beyond that year, we hope families will make themselves available to another student at the end of that period. Should the student and family be incompatible, it is reasonable to make a change.  Please call the student’s institution and relate the situation and we will make other arrangements. Families and students are asked to make contact at least once each month.  It may be only to inquire about health and well-being, or it may be for an invitation.  Keep in contact to show your interest and let your student know you are available. The thought is the important thing.  Additionally, international students appreciate the opportunity to practice their English skills. Religion and religious institutions constitute an important aspect of our culture in the United States which the foreign student should have an opportunity to learn about and observe if s/he so wishes. Students should know that they are welcome to attend services with you, particularly during religious holidays, but you should clearly indicate the nature of the event as well as its sponsorship.  When students have questions regarding religion, we strongly encourage an open discussion.  The policy of the Friendship Family Program, in accordance with NAFSA: Association of International Educators policy, is that proselytizing (or recruiting) must not be carried out.

In 1990, Smith County, Kansas, where Lebanon is located, was a thriving region. Today, it has a population of only 4,500, having suffered a drop of 150% in 100 years. By the middle of the next century, Smith County will have a population of zero. It, and Lebanon, will have essentially disappeared. About a year ago, Jim Rightner and his wife, Christine, came to town, planning to retire there, ready for small town life. During his first day in town, Jim decided to change things. Before long it become a perfect model of small town America. Lebanon is a town willing, in part, to accept this man's dream if it means surviving beyond the middle of the next century. As we learn more about his grand plan, we begin to learn more about what drives him, what's really behind his dream to rebuild Lebanon, Kansas.
Program Credits One Family in a Kansas Town was produced by Steven Lickteig with production assistance from Rob Hilton. The editor was Gemma Hooley and the sound engineer was Thom Woodward. This program was funded in part by the National Endowment of the Arts, with additional assistance by Mike Horan and Paul Schmidt. We would also like to thank Kim Bancroft, Norman Bemmelmans, Darrell Brogdon, David Bryant, Ruth Maddell, Bill Martin, Patricia Priest, Victoria Foth Sherry, Melinda Weir and Laura Wexler.

Injury Free Coalition for Kids: Dissemination of a Model Injury Prevention Program for Children and Adolescents
    Summary
The second three-year replication site of the program was The Kansas City Injury Coalition for Kids (KICK) at the Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Jane Knapp, MD, the head of pediatric emergency medicine, is the project director. The site started in January 1994 with $120,000 in IPP funding. Another $10,000 was added to extend activities until June 30, 1998. The site built a broad coalition with 42 activities, the most of any expansion site; eight focus on bicycle safety. Kansas City also set up a sophisticated injury surveillance system. It is paid for by a large grant from a local foundation. The surveillance system allows tracking of injuries over time. Since the program started, injury deaths have decreased from 54 to 41 per year and injury hospital admissions have decreased from 670 to 514. TABLE OF CONTENTS GRANT INFORMATION
