Kansas Attorney General Drug Abuse Resistance Education D.A.R.E. in Kansas The Statewide D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program was created by the legislature in1999. The program has two staff members, whose duties include assisting and providing resources to D.A.R.E. officers across the state, making school visits, and coordinating the training required before officers can teach the lessons. D.A.R.E. was established in 1983 and continues to be an active partnership between parents, schools, and law enforcement. The program has grown to be the most popular and widely used prevention curriculum in the world. Kansas has 257 D.A.R.E. officers representing 122 law enforcement agencies in 58 counties. In 2001, more than 130,000 Kansas students in 394 schools from 161 districts received the D.A.R.E. program. D.A.R.E. is a school-based prevention curriculum designed to be delivered by uniformed law enforcement officers. Its goal is to assist students in developing knowledge, skills and attitudes that will help them avoid substance abuse and violence. D.A.R.E. is a partnership between schools, families and law enforcement that enhances the protective and social bonding factors in family, school and community. It helps students identify risk factors and works on building skills to avoid those risk factors. The core curriculum is designed for the exit level of elementary school (usually 5th or 6th grade), and consists of a 17-lesson format. The middle school and high school curriculums are each delivered in 10 lessons. All three of these curriculums use a workbook and are based on a cooperative learning strategy.

Vander Yacht Having gone through two Special Education Due Process hearings and appeals on behalf of my son Nathan since 1997, I have come to the conclusion that the Kansas Special Education Due Process system itself is corrupt and a sham. I would like to share with you my experiences and why I have arrived at this conclusion. First of all, parents should never have to go through this process at all. The failure of our schools and the failures of the Kansas State Department of Education, and the United States Department of Education to hold local schools accountable to IDEA law have forced parents to have to take up this fight. Throughout this process parents are at a distinct disadvantage. School districts hire "high dollar" attorneys to represent them and have virtually unlimited resources. Parents unable to "compete" in such battles either drop out for lack of resources or fight back the best they can on limited resources, often having to mortgage their homes and deplete their life savings to join the fray. I fear that most families that wish to file due process never do for this reason, and their children pay the ultimate price.

Summers announced in February 2004 a major new initiative designed to encourage talented students from families of low and moderate income to attend Harvard College. While the new initiative has four major components, including recruitment, admissions, and a summer academic program designed to prepare talented students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds for college, the financial aid component increases aid for students from low and moderate income families. Beginning with the 2004-05 year, parents in families with incomes of less than $40,000 will no longer be expected to contribute to the cost of attending Harvard for their children. In addition, Harvard will reduce the contributions expected of families with incomes between $40,000 and $60,000. The University has earmarked $2 million in new financial aid funds to cover this expanded aid next year, bringing its total annual scholarship budget for undergraduates to just under $80 million. The new initiative, which will take effect next fall for all students - entering and returning - is expected to benefit more than 1000 families on an annual basis. The new financial aid initiative is the latest step in a progressive expansion of financial aid at Harvard in recent years. Harvard College's nearly $80 million in scholarships for undergraduates in the coming year represents a 49% increase over the past six years when inflation rose by only 13.5%. This increase in scholarship aid has reduced the average student loan debt upon graduation to $8,800 for the Class of 2003, a figure well below the national average of close to $20,000.

Contact Us Therapeutic Attachment Parenting While attachment therapy may involve a few hours a week of healing work, the parenting of a child takes place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Therefore the bulk of the healing is done in the home. Standard parenting techniques do not work with children who have attachment disorders due to the emotional, cognitive and developmental problems these children have. Parents of children with attachment difficulties/disorders need to provide therapeutic attachment parenting. There is no specifc parenting plan that is used by attachment therapists however all therapeutic attachment parenting have two basic components: having the right attitude (one of empathy, curiosity, acceptance, playfulness, and love), and providing significant structure and nurturance. The structure provides safety and security for the family and child. The nurturance (empathy, curiosity, acceptance, playfulness, and love) is what heals. There has to be a balance between structure and nurturance for healing to take place. Too much structure (boot camp, inflexibility, all work and no play) and the child feels mom is too hard emotionally to bond with. Too much nurturance (giving in, being inconsistent with consequences, no consequences or giving priviledges without being earned) and the child feels mom is a push-over and s/he is the one in control of the parent. Both of these result in the child feeling unsafe. When a child does not feel safe, s/he does not heal.
