Click Here to Sign an Online Petition We have been successful in getting the words, "school nursing services" inserted into the current draft of the IDEA reauthorization; HOWEVER, these words could be removed if committee members do not support this addition. It is URGENT that members of the Senate Committee are contacted immediately at their state offices. School nurses need to let their Senators know that they are voting residents of the state and that they want the Senator to support the inclusion of "school nursing services" within Related Services of IDEA. NASN has been asking for this inclusion for a number of years. Now that it is in the draft, it is up to all of us to keep it there!! Issue IDEA reauthorization legislation will soon be introduced in both the United States House of Representatives and Senate. It is important for school nurses to act now to assure that the bill that is introduced includes "school nursing services" under Related Services. The Senate version of IDEA will be introduced most probably by Senators Kennedy (MA) and Gregg (NH) contains, as NASN had requested, "school nurse services" in the legislative language of the Related Services Personnel Section.

Program Strategies That Don't Work with Learning Disabled Kids-And Strategies That Do. Rick Lavoie, Ph.D. will demonstrate and strategies and explore why these do not work, but will also provide parents and educators with unique field tested techniques that can be used to modify and improve a child?s behavior.

Seminar 9:00-3:30 A wise man once described "irrationality" as repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a difference result each time. In our field, there are numerous techniques that are frequently and extensively used despite the fact that these strategies are ineffective (e.g., follow-along reading, time out, classroom competition, punishment). This workshop will demonstrate these strategies and explore the reasons why they simply do not work. The second half of the seminar will outline twelve unique and field-tested techniques that can be used by parents and professionals to modify and improve children's behavior and performance.

Kansas' school funding declared unconstitutional Ruling could affect taxes, tuition rates Published on Tuesday, December 9, 2003 Sarah Rice Kansas State Collegian
A court decision announced Dec. 2 could mean more money for Manhattan schools. Shawnee District Court Judge Terry Bullock declared the state of Kansas' distribution system for school finance as unconstitutional and charged the Legislature with creating a new plan by July 1. "The court finds as a matter of fact and law that the funds provided to Kansas school districts by the Legislature under the present financing scheme as applied is clearly and grossly inadequate to provide Kansas children with a suitable education," Bullock wrote in his ruling. The current system has a base amount per pupil but awards extra funds to smaller school districts. Fifteen school districts formed the coalition and the Dodge City and Salina school districts were named the plaintiffs. Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Superintendent Sharol Little was previously the superintendent of Dodge City schools when the lawsuit was first born. "The purpose of the lawsuit is to bring suitable and equal education funding for all school children in Kansas," she said.

Considerations in Moving Your Special Needs Child Abroad
An international move creates challenges for all families, especially those with a learning disabled child. Here is one counselor's advice on how parents can meet the challenges and make the best choices for all involved.
by Kay Branaman Eakin
If you are the parent of a child with physical or mental disabilities, you know you must take into account your child's psychological, educational and social needs when making a decision that will have a major impact on your family life. Whether or not to accept an expatriate assignment is certainly such a decision.
Clearly, the choice should be made in the context of all family members' needs. Career and personal considerations for you and your spouse, as well as the educational and social needs of your other children will also come into play. But perhaps the central issue will be whether you can find appropriate support and educational services for your child in the assignment location. And, if not, are there alternatives that will enable you to accept the assignment and still meet the needs of your child?
The answer depends on many factors: your child's age and disability, the nature and location of your assignment, and your expectations, attitudes and willingness to search out solutions.
