Released 13 August 2001 An International Open Letter to all economics departments This document comes out a meeting of 75 students, researchers and professors from twenty-two nations who gathered for a week of discussion on the state of economics and the economy at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) this June 2001. The discussion took place at the Second Biennial Summer School of the Association for Evolutionary Economics (AFEE), jointly sponsored by UMKC, AFEE and the Center for Full Employment and Price Stability. The undersigned participants, all committed to the reform of our discipline, have developed the following open letter. This letter follows statements from other groups who have similar concerns. Both in agreement with and in support of the Post-Autistic Economics Movement and the Cambridge Proposal, we believe that economic theory, inhibited by its ahistorical approach and abstract formalist methodology, has provided only a limited understanding of the challenging complexity of economic behavior. The narrow methodological approach of economics hinders its ability to generate truly pragmatic and realistic policy prescriptions or to engage in productive dialogue with other social sciences. All economics departments should reform economics education to include reflection on the methodological assumptions that underpin our discipline.

Curry's Statehouse Studies
John Steuart Curry completed these crayon studies for murals in the Kansas Capitol, Topeka. The Kansas Museum of History collections include 19 of Curry's statehouse studies. Crayon studies are small preliminary sketches in preparation for completing a full-sized mural. In 1937, artist John Steuart Curry was asked to return to Kansas to cover the interior walls of the Topeka capitol with scenes from the state's history. The offer followed a statewide newspaper campaign to bring Kansas' most accomplished artist back to his home state. The campaign was initiated by popular Kansas newspaper men such as Jack Harris of the Hutchinson News , Paul Jones of the Lyons Daily News , and even William Allen White of the Emporia Gazette . Just four years later, though, legislators passed a resolution stopping Curry from completing his work. That year Curry left his home state never to return, leaving the finished murals unsigned. John Steuart Curry was born on November 14, 1897, in the small northeastern Kansas town of Dunavent. The eldest of five children in a farming family, his inclination toward art began at a young age. Curry's biographer and friend, Lawrence E. Schmeckebier, once wrote that as a youth on his father's farm Curry was interested in drawing everything . . . horses and fighting animals, railroad engines and trains, pictures of battles from the Revolutionary War, hosts of everyday things about him. He kept a

Buffalo nicke ls, buffalo wallows, buffalo jumps, buffalo skulls, buffalo robes, white buffalo, William "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Charles Jesse "Buffalo" Jones, buffalo burgers - without much effort most of us can make a long list of images inspired by the bison. Depicted in ancient Native American rock art and continuing to be a motif in popular culture, art, and commerce, it can be argued that the state animal of Kansas is the symbol of the American West, if not all of North America. "Bison: Animal and Icon" was the theme of Kansas Archeology Week, April 7-13, 2002. The poster and accompanying brochure show the living animal, as well as representations by American Indians and early explorers. The materials emphasize how archeological research on bison bone beds, combined with data from other sciences, can contribute to the understanding of past human behavior. Graphic designer Michael Irvin created the poster and brochure. Text was contributed by Ramona J. Willits. Dr. Jack L. Hofman and Jeannette Blackmar of the University of Kansas provided background information and a number of illustrations. Wayne Copp of Auburn, Kansas, allowed photo-documentation of his bison herd by KSHS photographer Craig Cooper. Kansas Anthropological Association volunteers assembled poster packets for mailing to Kansas schools (librarians and teachers of social

Kansas City Convention Center,
Kansas City, Missouri The Kansas City Convention and Entertainment Centers Facilities host hundreds of events each year. But in 1998, a major corporation threatened to back out of a commitment to hold its annual convention there due to the facilities’ advanced state of disrepair – quite a wake-up call for the city. In response, the City Council voted unanimously to sign a showcase performance contract with Johnson Controls to improve the complex’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, plumbing and lighting. The contract also included a 10 year service agreement. Perhaps the biggest attraction was that the improvements required no up-front capital investment by the city. Johnson Controls outlined a renovation that would pay for itself within 10 years with the money saved by increased efficiency and lower operating costs. Even better, Johnson Controls guaranteed a $1.1 million savings per year for the first 10 years, or it would pay the difference. Taxpayers and city planners rallied behind the project. Managers of the facilities, which include a large conference center, auditorium and arena, were thrilled with the no-risk deal that provided them with over $8 million in upgrades that they otherwise could not afford.

Legal gaming in Kansas includes lotteries, certain types of racing and American Indian, or tribal, gaming. State officials are looking at gaming as a way to raise revenue in tight budget times. In her announcement, Sebelius voiced concern about Kansans spending their money in Missouri casinos. Committee members plan to study the potential effects of increased gaming by visiting Topeka, Wichita, Kansas City and other cities in the next couple of months.

I. OVERVIEW 1. A Kansas City Response to a Challenge Bert Berkley is a classic Kansas City businessman. He is chairman of the board of his family's company, Tension Envelope, the third largest envelope manufacturer in the nation. Over the years, he has been involved in Kansas City's key organizations and has played a role in many community projects. In the early 1990s, he didn't like the way welfare was being handled in Kansas City. But instead of complaining to his friends, he did something about it. LINC's initial responsibilities were to provide advice and counsel on reforming the system that distributes over $273 million in federal and state welfare funds based on community need, to evaluate program effectiveness and recommend changes, and encourage cooperative agreements with various providers in the community. A great deal has changed in the welfare arena since LINC was established, but it appears the commission's role may grow as welfare reform is implemented.
