There are at least 65 species of 'kangaroos', with most being found in Australia, and a small, but unique, assortment in New Guinea. Despite the varied range of forms, there is a common body plan to all members of this group. They are often referred to as the 'macropods' from the scientific name of the superfamily, which translates from the Greek to mean 'big -footed' (Egerton 1997). This term describes one of their most defining and distinctive characteristics; long toes on big feet, on the end of strong hindlegs. This physical feature allows, especially in the larger species, for a fast and efficient hopping gait. In contrast, the arms and hands are generally much shorter and weaker. Historically, there have been many different families of kangaroos. Some of these contained members that were probably carnivorous in habit (Archer et al 200). All living macropods, however, are essentially herbivorous, the smaller ones being a little more omnivorous, and the larger ones being more standard grazers (Stahan 1998). All of the extant species belong to two families; the smaller, more primitive potoroids ('rat kangaroos', 'potoroos', 'bettongs'), and the generally larger and more recently evolved macropodids (kangaroos and various wallabies).

My problem is that they don't stay on my feet and slip up and down as I walk. I hope a shoe repair can give me something for the heel to hold them on my feet. The back is cut lower at the heel and is made wide. I am a true M width. However, there is no denying it, it's a nice shoe. Local Wildlife Kangaroos and Quokkas Visitors who appreciate a natural flavour to their holiday should head to Western Australia – the state is literally teeming with abundant and diverse wildlife, and our magnificent national forests and parks provide excellent animal-spotting opportunities.
Hopping along with the iconic kangaroo
Western Australia’s kangaroos are enjoyed as much by locals as they are by those travelling through the state.
There are two main species – western grey kangaroos (the most common) and the famous red kangaroo or “Blue Flyer”.
The red kangaroo is the largest marsupial in the world. Often growing bigger than a man, this species can reach heights in excess of six feet and weigh more than 80 kilograms. They prefer a more arid climate to the western greys, so visit the state’s desert outback regions for a guaranteed sighting.
Spot western grey kangaroos munching on their early morning breakfast grasses alongside bush tracks or on our plentiful golf course fairways. They tend to fancy hopping along the open greens.
You can also catch sight of these powerful marsupials crossing roads in rural areas, so keep watch for them during your travels into the Western Australian countryside.

Kangaroos kick it at new exhibit
By Stephen Heaphy Published: Thursday, May 13, 2004 The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will open a new exhibit tomorrow, highlighting the wildlife on the Australian continent.
The exhibit, called Voyage to Australia, will officially open to the public at 10 a.m. after a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The new exhibit will feature a variety of animals from the Australian continent, said Jacquie Myers, administrative assistant of marketing for the Columbus Zoo. At Kangaroo Station, guests can get up close to one of Australia's most famous residents, as visitors take a stroll in a walk-through kangaroo yard.
The new area will also feature a lorikeet garden where visitors can actually feed the colorful birds cups of nectar, which will supplement their diets.
Guests can also visit Koala Rest-O-Rama, where they can view koalas lounging in the trees. Myers says the name of the koala exhibit is appropriate.
"When you look at koalas, that's usually what they are doing: resting or sleeping," Myers said.

MAY 18, 2004 WE might play cricket together, but strong Australian opposition to offshoring has led to a backlash in the Indian press against what's being labelled Australian "economic nationalism".
Open Source notes with wry amusement a recent piece in Mumbai's The Economic Times, warning Indians that Australian aren't taking kindly to having their call-centre queries answered from the subcontinent. "A nation conscious of its ethnic identity, Australia has been extremely wary of opening the gates of freedom to migrants," the Times opines. "Although recent years has seen a spurt in migration, thanks to students and entrepreneurs, the land of the kangaroo is not yet ready to strike job alliances with India through outsourcing. "In other words, Australia is apprehensive of the Indian techie image, having successfully mastered great capabilities in terms of skill, using strict methodology and quality approaches to enhance reputation. "It is this fear psychosis that is working in the back of the minds of the Australians, sending jitters down their spines.

Furless joeys need to be kept at about 32 degrees constantly.

Management of kangaroos Summary. Why is management of kangaroo numbers necessary? kangaroos are the most numerous large vertebrate animal in Australia.
http://www.defence.gov.au/environment/biodiversity_conservation/mngt_roos.summar
Management of Kangaroos Summary Role of the Environmental Management Plan To ensure that Defence training continues to be conducted in a sustainable manner and in accordance with legislative environmental requirements, Defence has recently updated the Puckapunyal Military Area (PMA) Environmental Management Plan (EMP). The EMP includes an assessment of the environmental attributes of the PMA, identifies potential environmental issues associated with Defence activities and comprises management strategies to ensure that these activities are managed sustainably. One of the issues identified in the EMP is the need to manage kangaroo numbers at Puckapunyal to prevent the potential environmental degradation that could occur as a result of over-abundance. Why is management of kangaroo numbers necessary? Kangaroos are the most numerous large vertebrate animal in Australia. They are also highly fecund, enabling kangaroo populations to increase very rapidly, particularly in times of favourable climatic conditions. Where the stimulation of such a population increase is followed by less favourable climatic conditions, kangaroo numbers may exceed available resources. This can result in the degradation of environmental values through a loss of native vegetation, increased weed growth, soil erosion and water quality decline. As such, kangaroos present a management issue for a considerable number of national parks, agricultural properties, residential developments and other land tenures across Australia.

Kangaroo slaughter
Kangaroos and wallabies are protected wildlife. In spite of this, all a shooter needs to legally shoot these animals is a permit from the state or federal government. There are 3 ways in which they are killed: Commercial shooting . The Federal government each year sets quotas for how many kangaroos can be sold for meat and skins, both within Australia and overseas. Non-commercial shooting . State governments issue destruction permits to farmers who claim kangaroos or wallabies are causing agricultural damage. The animals may be shot, or poisoned with chemicals such as 1080. Illegal killing . Weekend shooters go spotlighting for fun, farmers shoot kangaroos for dog food or set snares around holes in fences, and some shooters illegally kill kangaroos to sell their corpses to processors.
Cruelty in kangaroo killing
In 1985, the RSPCA issued a report called Incidence of Cruelty to Kangaroos (1). They estimated how many kangaroos were killed instantly in the commercial kangaroo killing industry by examining corpses in chillers. The RSPCA calculated what percentage of kangaroos were shot through the head, because only a head shot causes so much damage that it almost guarantees an instant death. The effect of shooting an animal just below the ear is described as follows: "
