The largest massacre of land animals on the planet takes place in Australia each year. Millions of adult kangaroos are shot for their meat and skins. Millions of orphaned baby joeys, "worthless" to the industry, are shot, stamped on, clubbed over the head or abandoned to die. Help us stop the bloodshed. Every person can make a massive difference to global conservation. Simply never purchase wildlife - including kangaroo - products!
Steve Irwin, Australian wildlife expert and TV presenter. There is an urgent need for action to protect kangaroos from a barbaric industry which slaughters them for meat and leather. Please do all you can to help Viva! end this shameful massacre.

Kangas look at trading places and name
AS speculation intensifies over the changing of their administrative address (Punchlines, November 18) could the club be ready to shed its adopted Kangaroos tag?
I never liked it anyway and would be delighted if the club was rethinking the issue on whether it should revert to its traditional territorial name, North Melbourne.
What is wrong with North Melbourne? Any title with Melbourne in it surely has more impact and more value in a corporate sense than a mob of marsupials. The club, now under the control of ''The Doc'' Allen Aylett and CEO Michael Easy, appears to be getting the future into proper perspective and that is good news. We disclosed two weeks ago about the Roos' interest in Colonial Stadium as an administration base and that theory has strengthened, and could include gaming facilities. That would allow the footy department to stretch out at Arden St.

Australia's Amazing Kangaroos and the Birth of Their Young
by Andrew Snelling First published in:
Creation Ex Nihilo

September-November 1988 They're Australia's best-known marsupials - and they display all the evidence of planned, purposeful creation. Among the world's most curious creatures is Australia's amazing kangaroo. He appears standing proud and tall on the Australian coat of arms, and has been a rallying symbol for national sporting teams. Benign of face, bottom-heavy of build, kangaroos outclass most of the animal kingdom in the long and high jump, boxing, and karate. Born a mere 1-1.5 centimetres (half-inch) long, and weighing less than a grain, kangaroos can grow taller than a man. As with most other marsupials, one of the three orders of mammals, they raise their young in body pouches. But kangaroos have another advantage - an expectant female can retain an embryo in ready reserve for months, until the conditions are right for its continued development.

If you think of anything that you think should be added, please let me know by email (see at the bottom of this page). I quite often get emails with some really good questions even though people wonder if it sounds silly. Different people want to know different facts about kangaroos. Please let me know also if you would be interested in a copy once it is complete (more details as it progresses!) Just to clarify something for you....All the paperwork for Sponsoroo is done here in Australia, not with the Sponsoroo contacts in UK, USA and Canada. Once you contact them, they email me to let me know. But please factor that into your time for postage, especially when the Sponsoroo is for a gift. For instance, from here to UK the post takes about 5 to 7 days. Many thanks.

KANGAROOS - Where do they come from? Why do they hop? Did they evolve from some other animal?
K
The whole family is best known as the Macropodidae
They varied enormously in size. The tiny, scampering musky rat-kangaroo still lives in the tropical rain-forests of northern Queensland (Australia). However, the massive, blunt-faced Procoptodon is extinct. Three basic size ranges are recognized today. At the other end of the scale from the six large types mentioned above are the rat/rabbit-sized bettongs, potoroos and rat-kangaroos. In between are the tree kangaroos (a specialized group comprising nine species that live and move about in the trees), and those commonly called wallabies.
Kangaroo Reproduction
Why the pouch? In the desert species, carrying the baby in the pouch is convenient for the female, who may travel many miles for fresh food and water. The youngster stands a greater chance of survival because it does not have to keep up with her and is tucked away from predators. During prolonged drought, kangaroos stop breeding. In some species, a doe [the female] is able to delay the development of a fertilized egg inside her until an older joey dies or vacates the pouch. This remarkable phenomenon occurs in the red kangaroo, the eastern grey kangaroo, the common wallaroo (euro), the brush-tailed bettong, and several of the larger wallabies. It has also been noted in the honey possum and some non-marsupial mammals such as bats and seals.

Kangaroos They have big back legs with long feet. They hop on their back legs. They eat grass. Some live in hot, dry places and some live in grasslands. They have red or grey fur Kangaroos belong to a group of marsupials called macropods, which means 'great footed animals'. All macropods have strong back legs with long feet. They hop on their back legs when travelling, using the tail as a balance. Their front legs are small. Kangaroos live in groups of ten or more called mobs. Mobs can number over 50. They feed at night on grass and other low growing plants. They drink water when they find it, but can go for long periods of time without drinking. They rest in the day. Kangaroos weigh less than 2 grams when they are born. The tiny baby, called a joey, climbs up its mother's belly and into her pouch. The mother can't touch it because it is so tiny. She licks a path in her fur for it to travel along. Inside the pouch it grabs onto one of four teats and remains attached to it for about nine months. Milk is automatically fed to the joey, and the milk changes according to the joey's needs as it grows until it no longer needs milk. At nine months the joey will start to leave the pouch for increasing periods of time, returning always to the same teat for a feed until it is weaned.
