In fact, the red kangaroos of Australia s Outback are among the finest athletes of the animal world. Yet kangaroos thrive by the millions.
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/redroos/
NATURE invites viewers to share the inspiring beauty and harsh realities of survival in the land of the "Big Red Roos."
They box and wrestle, kick with authority, and cover large patches of ground with powerful leaps. In fact, the red kangaroos of Australia's Outback are among the finest athletes of the animal world. And that's just as well, since the Outback presents one of the most challenging environments on the planet.
Some of the hardships kangaroos must learn to endure are summer temperatures reaching more than 140 degrees Fahrenheit; persistent drought that's occasionally interrupted by deadly floods; powerful eagles that swoop down from the skies; lethal parasites borne by mosquitoes; and the ever-present danger of hungry dingos. Moreover, the rising human demand for kangaroo meat does little to brighten life expectancy for members of future generations. Yet kangaroos thrive by the millions. "Big Red Roos" provides an incisive look at how they survive, by following the adventures of a small group, which includes a mother and the young joey she must do her best to protect.

Kangaroos and Wallabies
The Kangaroo and the Emu appear on Australia's coat of arms. Kangaroos The term kangaroo is a common term used for the larger members of the macropod, (big toe) family. There are other names given to the smaller members of the species, but if they are a macropod, they are a kangaroo. Fossilized skeletons have been excavated of kangaroos as large as 10 ft. tall and 650 lbs., such as the "Short Faced Kangaroo", which is now extinct and as small as 8 oz. in the "Rat Kangaroo". Many have become extinct through time, but many have reached their demise since the 1900's with man's encroachment. There are over 60 different species of kangaroos confirmed alive in Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand and a few surrounding islands. Some have only been seen a few times, but are believed to still exist. The most commonly seen kangaroo is the Eastern Grey Macropus Giganteus Starting with the largest, the kangaroo, weighing up to 160 lbs. to the wallabies weighing in the 20-30 lb. range and descending to the smallest, being the rat kangaroo at one pound. The different species or types of kangaroos, with the possibly extinct ones omitted, are the kangaroos (3 types), wallaroo (3 types), tree kangaroo (8 types), wallaby (26 types), monjon (1 type), dorcopsis (6 types), pademelon (4 types), bettong (5 types), potoroo (3 types), rat kangaroo (1 type). They are mostly adaptable to new environments with wild populations accidentally started in Hawaii with a pair of rock wallabies escaping from their crate at the airport and through time have built a herd (mob) of over 100 head.

A male kangaroo is called a boomer
A female kangaroo is called a flyer
A baby kangaroo is called a joey How the Kangaroo got its name... When European explorers first saw these strange hopping animals they asked a native Australian (aborigine) what they were called.
He replied "kangaroo" meaning "I don't understand" your question.
The explorers thought this was the animal's name. And that's how the kangaroo got its name. Marsupial Mammal Kangaroos are the largest members of a group of mammals known as marsupials, which means the female carries its young in a pouch on the stomach. The Kangaroo moves by hopping on its powerful hind legs. It uses its thick long tail (which on larger species grows up tp 3 feet) to balance its body while hopping. A kangaroo can hop up to 64kmh (40mph) and leap over obstacles as high as 1.8m (6ft). Because of the unusual shape of its legs and its bulky tail a kangaroo can't walk or move backwards very easily. The female gives birth to tiny offspring (1 inch long), when they are born their eyes, ears and hind legs are not developed. Immediately after birth the joey crawls up its mothers abdomen and into her pouch, where it attaches itself to a nipple and feeds of her milk. The joey will leave the pouch for the first time after about 6 months, returning regularly. After 8 months it leaves permanently - Within a day the mother gives birth to another joey!

... Cryptozoology > Phantom Kangaroos Phantom Kangaroos by Davy Russell POSTED: 30 January 99 It’s hard to believe that Australian kangaroos could be hopping around all over the United States. But what’s even harder to imagine is that these out-of-place marsupials appear to posses supernatural abilities as they rummage through the backyards of bewildered people in California, Illinois, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Ohio, and Indiana, to name a few. Phantom kangaroos have been spotted in a variety of urban and rural settings and are said to be particularly hostile. They are described to be 3.5 - 5.5 feet tall with glowing eyes and ghostly characteristics. They have been blamed for slaughtering numerous dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and other small animals in areas with high kangaroo activity. According to W. Haden Blackman’s Field Guide to North American Monsters , the first reported phantom kangaroo sighting was on June 12, 1899 in Richmond, Wisconsin.

Introduction Musky Rat Kangaroo Lumhaltz's Tree Kangaroo Red Kangaroo Grey Kangaroo If you always thought of the kangaroo as one of a kind, you would be surprised to know that it belongs to a large family with as many as 56 species! The six larger species are called kangaroos and wallaroos while the smaller ones are called rat kangaroos, potoroos, tree kangaroos, pademelons and wallabies. How do you identify the different large kangaroos? By their noses! A wallaroo's nose has a large black bare patch around it. A red kangaroo has a smaller, boomerang-shaped black bare patch on its nose. The grey kangaroo's nose is covered with hair except for narrow bare bands around the nostrils. Kangaroos are big-footed marsupials which evolved in Australia. The males of the species are known as boomers, the females as flyers and the young as joeys. The female has a pouch in front of her body in which she carries the young after birth.

So you ve heard all about kangaroos and you re wondering if you ll get to see them on your AUSSIE WALKABOUTS trip. Well the simple answer is YES!
http://www.aussiewalkabouts.com/kangaroos.htm
So you've heard all about Kangaroos and you're wondering if you'll get to see them on your AUSSIE WALKABOUTS trip. Well the simple answer is YES! Kangaroos are very common in Australia and in some places are considered a pest. In western Australia for example, driving at night on the many highways is a dangerous occupation as kangaroos tend to bound across the road at a moments notice. Sometimes they become mesmerised by the headlights of oncoming cars can just sit there waiting for you to crash into them! Some of the larger kangaroos can do serious damage to a car and it's occupants if they collide at high speeds, it's because of this that many people opt to use what are known as roo bars. Essentially a roo bar is a metal grid that is put in front of the car to take the brunt of the force should you collide with a kangaroo. The scientific name for Kangaroos and Wallabies is ' Macropods' this means 'big foot' they are Marsupials which means they have pouches and they are Mammals which means they produce milk for their babies. Kangaroos usually live in family groups called Mobs. These Mobs can be as large as 100 , many of the smaller Wallabies and Kangaroo Rats live alone .
