Red Kangaroos - Physical Description
Red Kangaroos, also called Giant Red Kangaroos, are the largest living marsupials that are about 5 feet long, weigh 90 kilograms and have tail as long as 42 inches that is used as a balance mechanism when animals jump. The Kangaroos can't walk instead they hop very high. The females are naturally smaller than the males. These animals feed mostly on grass and other vegetation. Sometimes they can do without water feeding only vegetation for a long period of time. They are the best jumpers of all mammals and can jump as high as 28 feet in distance and 6 feet in height; their speed exceeds 30 mph. They can jump for hours at a speed of 12 mph. The male Red Kangaroo is usually of reddish color and the female is bluish-gray. Kangaroos have long, strong hind legs that help them to hop up to 40 miles per hour and go over 30 feet in one hop. Females that are quicker than males are called does, flyers, roo or jill. Adult Red Kangaroos are called bucks, boomers or jacks while a baby is called a joey.

Who's Who in The Macropod World
When the Australian continental plate separated from Antarctica and began drifting north 64 to 136 million years ago, only its higher elevations protruded above the ocean, comprising a patchwork of isolated tropical islands. As their climate cooled and dried, and ocean levels fell, they formed a continent blanketed by large patches of grasslands.
Marsupialsmammals with external pouches in which their young developexploited the new gastronomic bonanza. The colonization began inauspiciously about 30 million years ago, after rat-sized animals hopped down from the relative safety of trees. They, in turn, gave rise to kangaroos and their various relativesall called macropods. Many developed extraordinary speed and water-conserving physiology. The animals eventually occupied niches ranging from rocky hills, to forests, to open countryvarying in size from the musky rat-kangaroo, which can weigh less than half a kilogram (1 lb.), to red kangaroos, which can weigh more than 80 kilograms (175 lbs.).
Here are some of the current highlights of who's who among macropods:
* The Big Guys: The most well-known macropods are the three widespread species of large kangaroos. The red kangaroo most often inhabits the open plains of inland Australia and can live on little water. Eastern and western grey kangaroos, which need more drinking water than reds, usually inhabit woodlands, although they graze pastures at night. All three are closely related to 11 smaller wallabies and wallaroos that thrive in habitats ranging from wet forests to arid and semi-arid grasslandsand all look fairly similar except for differences in size.

KANGAROOS
The rate of growth for the young kangaroo is rapid. A newborn red kangaroo ( Megaleia rufa ) weighs only 1.5 gm at birth and is approximately the size of a jelly bean. It remains in the pouch for 7-8 months before it begins to venture out. By 50 days the joey (baby kangaroo) will weigh 1.5 ounces, reaching 9-11 pounds when it leaves the pouch. Locomotion in kangaroos is interesting. When feeding or moving slowly, they balance on their small forelegs and strong tail and swing their large hindlegs forward. The arms and tail are then brought up to complete the movement. When traveling fast, only the two hindfeet are used with the tail held almost horizontally as a balancer. They clear obstacles the same way with leaps up to 26 feet long. The leap does not usually carry them more than 5 feet off the ground. Over short distances kangaroos reach speeds of nearly 40 mph. The tail is used as prop when the animal stands upright and may be the only part touching the ground during fighting when a kangaroo can kick an opponent using both hindfeet together. A female kangaroo is called a flyer, the male a boomer, and the baby is called a joey. Red kangaroos live in groups of about a dozen called mobs. Red kangaroos are found all over Australia. They are grazers, so they compete with domestic sheep for grass.

Red Kangaroo Scientific Name: Macropus rufus Home: The open arid plains and woodlands of central Australia Description: Long, hind, hoppin' limbs, short arms, large heavy tail, red fur on backs of males, gray fur on females, white furred bellies on both. Red kangaroos are famous for their hoppin' style and being the biggest marsupials around. Herbivores that graze mostly on grass, the red kangaroo congregates in groups of up to ten to feed together. These groups are based more on being in the same place than close family ties. Mother and joey stick together for years after the baby has left mama's pouch. Joeys are born as small, bean-sized hairless babies that climb up and into the safety of the pouch. That's where he continues to grow. After 33 weeks, a joey becomes too big to be carried around, but many try to climb back in until they get the message from mom that taxi-time is over! At top-speed kangaroos may make 12 foot leaps and reach a velocity of 30 mph! Even a lazy, SLOW hop can be as far as six feet! The long, heavy, and powerful kangaroo tail makes it all possible by providing balance and stability. Only tree kangaroos move their hind feet independently of one-another. The red kangaroo can't walk, it only hops! Bucks, or male kangaroos, aren't much for fighting to protect the herd when trouble comes, the whole herd scatters off in all directions! But when it comes to breeding rights, bucks KICKBOX! The two opponents clasp arms and try to kick each other in the belly!

Ask a person to think of something totally Australian and he or she will usually pick the kangaroo, the best known of the marsupial animals, which have pouches, or marsupia, to feed and carry their young. Some marsupials are found in North and South America, but Australia, with 120 species, has a much wider variety. The most specialized forms, like the herbivorous kangaroos (family Macropodidae) and opossums (family Phalangeridae), are peculiar to Australia and obviously originated from the more generalized carnivorous types, some of which exist in the Americas.
The best known of the Australian kangaroos is the red (or plains) kangaroo. Big Red, or Old Man Red, is depicted on the Australian coat of arms. He is the biggest of the kangaroos. The male has bright wine-red coloring and the female is smoky-blue. The females, or Blue Fliers, can travel up to 48 kilometres an hour (30 miles per hour), or move at almost the same speed as a racing greyhound. The red kangaroos are widely distributed over the plains of Australia, but they are not usually found where the rainfall exceeds 63 centimetres (25 inches a year).
The kangaroo has stunted forelimbs but elongated hind legs, which give it great strength and speed in leaping along. Its big tail is used for balance or for pushing its body along slowly while grazing. It is believed that the red kangaroo can exist without free water by extracting moisture from the grass it eats. Reds feed mainly at dusk and do not seem to have any definite group structure. They can be found in groups of from 2 to over 100. The grey kangaroo, however, usually moves in groups of up to 20. The greys are probably the most familiar of the kangaroos as they inhabit areas closer to civilization than the others do.
