Justice Department Probe of Unethical Senate Conduct Sought Leaked Memos May Identify Votes Traded for Campaign Contributions
In response to allegations of unethical conduct among U.S. senators - including the possible exchange of votes for campaign contributions - The National Center for Public Policy Research has joined other organizations in asking the U.S. Department of Justice's Public Integrity Section to begin an immediate investigation. Also participating in the call for an official investigation are National Center programs Project 21, an African-American leadership network, and its American Criminal Justice Center, which covers judicial issues. Manuel A. Miranda, a former counsel to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, has informed Senate Ethics Committee Chief Counsel Robert Walker that he, Miranda, read documents obtained from a once-shared section of the Senate Judiciary Committee computer network that "includes evidence of the direct influencing of the Senate's advice and consent role by the promise of campaign funding and election support in the last mid-term election." Related documents published in the Wall Street Journal and Washington Times show Committee business was profoundly influenced by the demands of special interest groups prior to the most recent mid-term elections and the change in Senate leadership. The computer hard drive containing the files cited by Miranda is now in the possession of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms William Pickle.

The Department of Community Justice promotes public safety and strives to reduce recidivism among juvenile delinquents and adult offenders through a balance of supervision, services, and sanctions. The Department seeks to share information with community members, partners, and staff on what works to keep communities safe by preventing and reducing crime, and to routinely evaluate the extent to which local policies support those best practices. Adult Community Justice strategies seek to keep the public safe, to control costs, to hold adult offenders accountable in fair ways, and to reduce recidivism. Juvenile Community Justice strategies seek to prevent delinquency, intervene early in delinquency, hold youth accountable in fair ways, reduce recidivism, protect public safety, and control costs.

E-Mail This Article Published on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 in the lndependent/UK Cover-up at US Justice Department by Andrew Buncombe in Washington It is only one breast and it is supposed to be art but for the US Attorney General, John Ashcroft, it was apparently one breast too many.
Reports suggested yesterday that Mr Ashcroft had grown tired of giving briefings at the US Justice Department in front of two naked statues, one known as "Minnie Lou". As a result, he has now ordered that tasteful curtains be used to cover the offending anatomical feature. The aluminum Art Deco statues date from the 1930s when the Great Hall in the Justice Department was built as a grand, two-storey room to be used for department events and ceremonies. The formal entrance leading up a winding stairway is adorned with murals depicting great figures in the history of law, including Moses, Hammurabi, and John Marshall, the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The two enormous statues are sited at the opposite end of the hall. On the left, a female figure represents the Spirit of Justice and, to the right, the male is the Majesty of Justice. The male statue is clad with a strategically-draped cloth while the female statue wears a sort of toga that reveals one breast.

E-Mail This Article Published on Wednesday, February 4, 2004 by CommonDreams.org What the Justice Department Inspector General's Report Doesn't Tell Us by Nancy Talanian Last Wednesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ)'s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) issued a semiannual report that documented the processing of more than 1,000 complaints of alleged civil rights and civil liberties abuses the DOJ received in a six-month period. The report came on the heels of two major arguments for amending sections of the USA PATRIOT Act: On Monday, federal judge Audrey Collins handed down a ruling that part of the Act is unconstitutional. On Tuesday, one of the Act's leading authors, Georgetown Law Professor Viet Dinh, said that he supports modifications. Communities also continued to weigh in. To date, 242 municipalities in 37 states, plus the state legislatures of Hawaii, Alaska, and Vermont have passed resolutions calling for amending the PATRIOT Act. Defenders of retaining the PATRIOT Act in its original form seized on the OIG report's conclusion that "none of the 162 matters alleging misconduct by DOJ employees related to their use of a substantive provision in the PATRIOT Act" as proof that criticism of the PATRIOT Act and calls for its review are unfounded. However, the statement's assertions relate only to whether DOJ employees, such as the FBI and the Bureau of Prisons, engaged in misconduct. Neither the statement nor the report is a referendum on the PATRIOT Act's constitutionality or on whether its application by federal, state, or local entities abridges civil liberties and rights.

Re: US v Voices in the Wilderness (VitW), court summons dated 6-23-03
Dear Attorney General Ashcroft:
The US Justice Department has sued Voices in the Wilderness in federal court to try to collect a fine from them of $20,000 for bringing medicines to the people of Iraq. Over the past seven years VitW has organized more than 65 delegations to Iraq made up of teachers, veterans, social workers, artists, health care professionals, trades people and people of faith. Many of these delegates carried symbolic amounts of medicine as an act of civil disobedience against the injustice of the economic sanctions; they then returned to the United States to tell about the brutalizing effects of the sanctions, magnified by the US bombing of the Iraqi civilian infrastructure during the Gulf War.
The Justice Department is choosing to launch an attack on Voices in the Wilderness at a time when Iraqi people and US soldiers are being killed daily and the US occupying forces have failed to provide for the security and basic humanitarian needs of Iraqi people. As a friend of VitW I call upon the Justice Department to refuse to prosecute VitW and commit to donating whatever money that would have been spent on the prosecution of this case towards the humanitarian efforts of NGOs working in Iraq, the clean-up of the hundreds of tons of depleted uranium now polluting Iraq from US weaponry and the payment of reparations to the families of Iraqi victims of the US invasion and occupation. Dropping the lawsuit would be the just and reasonable thing to do, for the following reasons:

91. Justice Department Funds Video Surveillance
Almost the entire amount of the local law enforcement grant awarded by the us department of justice was spent on the video equipment.
http://www.notbored.org/doj.html
Federal grant money will fund video enhancement system
Crooks will no longer be able to hide in fuzzy surveillance videos, thanks to a new video-enhancement system the Lewisville Police Department bought with $25,000 of federal grant money. Almost the entire amount of the local law enforcement grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice was spent on the video equipment. The $25,287 grant also requires a 10 percent match from the city, bringing the total available to $28,097. The rest of the funds will be used to purchase steel frames, which will be used in firearms training by the officers, assistant police chief Jerry Galler said. "We had to seriously look at getting the [video] equipment because it took nearly all of the grant money," Galler said. "But we think it'll do a lot for us. I've seen demos of the equipment and it's incredible what they can actually bring out of the video." The funds were accepted at the Oct. 6 city council meeting, and a committee approved the purchase decisions last week. Galler said he hopes to see the new equipment within a month or two. According to Galler, surveillance videotape from recorders such as those in convenience stores, ATM machines and police in-car cameras, is often of poor quality or is time-lapse video. The new software, called dTective, was developed by Maryland-based Ocean Systems and is powered by Avid Xpress software. It can brighten, stabilize or isolate parts of a video to allow police to identify faces, license plates or other details from dark or shaky parts. It also can convert time-lapse video into real-time and "demultiplex" or isolate footage taken from a system of cameras into a particular camera's footage needed to see the evidence.

Government Report Faults Justice, FBI, Immigration and Prison Officials
(Washington D.C., June 2, 2003) The Bush Administration should take immediate action to remedy the human rights violations documented by the Department of Justice’s internal investigation of its treatment of non-citizens detained after September 11, Human Rights Watch said today. The hard-hitting 198-page report released today by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), an internal agency watchdog, confirms abuses reported by Human Rights Watch, including prolonged detention without charge, denial of access to legal counsel, and excessively harsh conditions of confinement. U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Dismisses Terror Threat of Pistol Disguised as Pen
Manufacturer Reported to Have Sold 4,000 "Pen Guns," Brags "No One Will Know It's A Pistol" Washington, DC—The U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is continuing to place the general public at risk by refusing to use its regulatory powers to restrict the availability of a handgun disguised as a pen, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) charged today. Recently, the gun's manufacturer, Canadian citizen Marc Lefebvre, president of Stinger Manufacturing Co., Inc., bragged, "If I put it [the pen gun] on the table, no one will know it's a pistol. If no one had ever seen our product, 80 percent of them would not know what it is." At the same time, an ATF spokesman has acknowledged that "We [ATF] have the ability to re-evaluate this gun but I don't know if we are going to at this time." Stinger is reported to have sold approximately 4,000 of its pen guns. ATF's inaction is in spite of an October 2002 "Officer Safety Bulletin" warning about the Stinger pen gun issued nationally by the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations based at Andrews Air Force Base, and warnings by the Department of Homeland Security that terrorists might attempt to use ordinary items to conceal explosives or weapons—the exact purpose of a pen gun.
