ASPEN, Colo. The U.S. Department of Justice is prepared to begin prosecuting peer-to-peer pirates, a top government official said on Tuesday. John Malcolm, a deputy assistant attorney general, said Americans should realize that swapping illicit copies of music and movies is a criminal offense that can result in lengthy prison terms. "A lot of people think these activities are legal, and they think they ought to be legal," Malcolm told an audience at the Progress and Freedom Foundation’s annual technology and politics summit. In an interview, Malcolm would not say when prosecutions would begin. The response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks temporarily diverted the department's resources and prevented its attorneys from focusing on this earlier, he said. A few weeks ago, some of the most senior members of Congress pressured the Justice Department to invoke a little-known law, the

The US Justice Department has declared that a massive lawsuit filed after the detention of hundreds of Muslim men in the Los Angeles area can only be heard by the Supreme Court. Immigration lawyers said as many as 1,000 men who had voluntarily come to register themselves in accordance with an anti-terror scheme were detained, although federal officials said fewer than 250 had been held. OFFICE OF THE AG PUBLICATIONS CONTACT US SEARCH ... Registry Forms Identity Theft Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. Victims come from all walks of life – from everyday people to celebrities like Tiger Woods and Rosie O'Donnell.
The Federal Trade Commission's identity theft hotline reports receiving more than 1,000 calls a week. In California, nearly 800 victims in Los Angeles County alone reported having someone using their identity while committing a crime or attempting to avoid prosecution.
It is a felony in California to use the personal identifying information of another person without the authorization of that person for any unlawful purpose including to obtain credit, goods, services, or medical information [Penal Code section 530.5 et. seq.]
California operates five regional Hi-Tech Crimes Task Forces to investigate and prosecute identity theft.
The Attorney General's Office maintains an Identity Theft Registry to assist victims who are wrongfully identified as criminals. Through the ID Theft data base, law enforcement and anyone else designated by the victim to have access would be notified that the criminal history is not his or hers. To learn more, visit the ID Theft Registry web page here, or call toll-free: (888) 880-0240.
To help protect against identity theft, California enacted a new law requiring businesses and government agencies beginning July 1, 2003, to notify consumers if hackers gain entry to computers that contain unencrypted personal information such as credit card numbers, pass codes needed for use of personal accounts, Social Security numbers or driver's license numbers.

No longer will US Attorney General John Ashcroft appear in public with a semi-nude statue towering above him. The US Justice Department has spent $8,000 on curtains to hide the statue from the cameras. The female, art-deco "Spirit of Justice" statue, with one breast exposed, is located on the podium in the department's ornate Great Hall where news conferences are often held.
Mr Ashcroft 'knew nothing' of the decision
One fully-exposed breast protrudes from her toga garment. Her male counterpart, the "Majesty of Law", is sculpted with a cloth strategically placed around his waist. Photographers have gone to great lengths in the past to capture the scantily-clad female statue in the background as the Justice Department's top brass addressed the world's press. Mr Ashcroft has been photographed speaking in front of her several times since the 11 September attacks.
