Olympic Judo
Judo was added to the Olympics in 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. The object of Judo is to throw your opponent or hold them down. The best score is an ippon. There are seven weight classes in Judo. The heavyweight Judo competitors from the U.S.A. are Martin Boonzaayer and Colleen Rosensteel. Martin is from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Colleen is from Buffalo Grove, Illinois. The best countries in Judo are Germany, Belgium, France and Cuba. Today, September 17th, 2000, Huseyin Ozkan from Turkey and Legna Verdecia from Cuba won gold medals in Judo. I got to see the Olympics Opening Ceremonies on T.V. They were fun to watch. I found out about Olympic Judo on the Web.
Judo was invented in Japan in 1882. It was invented by a man named Jigora Kano. Judo was developed from the sport of jujitsu. Judo is a safe way of playing jujitsu. Judo means,"the gentle way." Judo became a Olympic sport in 1964. It is now a national Olympic sport.
Japan has won twice as many gold medals as any other country in this sport. Judo became an Olympic sport after Jigora Kano died. A win is called an ippon. Other ways to score (but not win) are a yuko and koka. A way to score another point is for the other opponent to go out bounds, for the opponent to be disrespectful to a judge, or to do a dangerous move. Judo is complicated, but it is fun to do. Judo interested me because I take karate and judo is related.

This book is chock full of information. Unfortunately, not the sort of information that the average Judoka can use. This book is a "collection and review of sport science literature on judo training, performance and athletes." As the book itself says, "It is not, however, a book on judo competition technique, but rather a comprehensive literature review on sport science as it applies to elite judo performance." As you can see from the description given, this book will be quite valuable for national and international level Judo competitors and coaches, and can even be interesting reading for the average Judoka, but it's not the average Judo book.

Traditional martial arts like judo and kendo are popular, as are sports imported from overseas, such as baseball and soccer (football). Many Japanese go to the sea for surfing and scuba diving in the summer, while skiing and snowboarding are popular winter pursuits. MAJOR SPORTS
Baseball is one of the most popular spectator sports in Japan. There are 12 professional baseball teams, six in the Central League and six in the Pacific League. The teams in each league play about 140 games each during the season, at the end of which the two league winners meet in the Japan Series. In recent years, more and more Japanese players have been moving to the United States to play in Major League Baseball. Two of the most famous are Suzuki Ichiro and Matsui Hideki. Amateur baseball is also popular, and many schoolchildren play the game through local Little Leagues or school baseball clubs. The National High-School Baseball Championship, which is held twice a year, is fought out among schools that have survived tough qualifying rounds to represent their prefectures.

Winter 2002, V.10.6 Kodokan judo, was the original development of one man, Kano Jigoro. Sickly as a youth, Kano studied various old jujutsu styles to build up his strength. As Japan modernized at the turn of the 20th Century, he became an educator and sought to refashion old jujutsu into what he thought would be more scientific and pedagogically sound system of sport, fitness and discipline. Kano's efforts saved Japanese martial arts, which were falling into disrepute and ill favor next to Western sports exercises. Kano gathered many outstanding athletes and technicians at his school, including Yamashita, Saigo Shiro, Yokoyama, etc. He tried to include judo as an Olympic sport as early as before World War II, but died before seeing his dreams reach fruition. Judo was among the first of the modern "Do" or Martial Ways, and was among the first to be taught so openly and vigorously both in modern Japan and abroad in other countries, alongside kendo. The Kodokan, Kano's main judo headquarters, sent many top flight instructors to other countries. The postwar Occupation of Japan, in the end, actually benefited judo because when the ban on martial arts was lifted, hundreds if not thousands of foreign military personnel and foreign visitors ended up training at the Kodokan or its many branch and affiliate schools.

HOME "What drives me most is the passion I have for the sport. That's why I do it."
Featured Athlete: Marie-Hélène Chisholm , Judo
From injury list to medal podiums in a year
By Alison Korn
Just one year after she had to pull out of the 2002 Commonwealth Games with an ankle injury, Marie- Hélène Chisholm has been mercilessly flipping, throwing and holding her judo opponents en route to the 2003 Pan Am Games this August.
At 24, Chisholm has already been on the national team for ten years and is the top female prospect on a powerful Canadian judo squad. Though she won the Francophonie Games in 2001, Chisholm's career really caught fire this season, after she returned from three months off last summer to heal. In 2003 alone, Chisholm has medalled in seven out of eight international competitions, including in the Pan American Judo Championships in Salvador, Brazil, in June.
"I was scared coming back," says Chisholm, who weighs 70 kilograms and stands 170 centimetres tall (five feet six inches, 154 pounds). She admits her success took her by surprise, but says now, "When I go in tournaments, I want more and more."
Chisholm credits a sports psychologist with teaching her how to visualize her fights and gain confidence. Another world-class Canadian judoka in the same 70 kg weight class, Catherine Roberge, offers ongoing domestic competition, which will heat up over the Olympic spot next year. And Sylvain Hébert, who's been coaching Chisholm since she was 16, provides direction at the high performance Club de Judo de Varennes, which started as a small local club and grew in to a regional and then in 2001, a national training centre.

Judo Now Offered at Bilkent For those who are seeking to learn how to defend themselves in a safe and effective way, Judo has been just added to the long list of sports courses provided by the Physical Education and Sports Center.
Judo traces its roots back to the art of “Jmijutsu”, which may be the mother of all the arts of self-defense. In the 18th century, it was modernized and offered, for the first time as an Olympic Sport at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Being an Olympic Sport, Judo differs from the others in the way that all mortal attacks are eliminated from the sport. In other words, Judo is a safe sport with special techniques that allows one to defend oneself without the need for mortal blows. Instead of using “kicking” as a means of defense, Judo teaches one to use the energy of the attacker in order to defeat him. Strange, isn’t it? Moreover, along with improving reflexes, judo teaches one how to foresee the next action of an attacker from his movements or the way he stands; in this way, one can effectively guard oneself from an attack.
A strange fact about Judo, as Selahattin Dorukoðlu, the Judo trainer at Bilkent states, is that all of the best judokas in the world have at least a university degree. Judo is not only a physical activity, but a mental activity as well. He further adds that if one works hard, in 4-5 years of effective training, one can reach a high enough level to possibly join the National team. Here is another fact: we Turks are very successful at this sport. Gold and Silver Medals in the Olympics and the Championship Competitions are among our achievements on the international platform. Do not hesitate to take a trip to the Far East within the borders of Bilkent by the way of Judo.

SJSU Judo History JUDO AT SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY
In 1937, the Police School at San Jose State University saw the advantages of Judo and added the sport to their curriculum. In 1940 they asked Yosh Uchida to teach the class as a student coach. Uchida taught for 2 years before entering the Service in 1942. Upon his return in 1946, he resumed his teaching career at San Jose State on a part-time basis, while pursuing his degree in biology.
In 1964, Judo became recognized as an Olympic sport and Yosh Uchida became the first U.S. Olympic Judo Coach. Two of the four U.S. Olympic Team Members, Ben Nighthorse Campbell and Paul Maruyama, were coached by Uchida at San Jose State. Ben Nighthorse Campbell is now a U.S. Senator representing the state of Colorado. Paul Maruyama is now a retired Air Force Colonel and coached the 1980 and 1984 U.S. Olympic Judo Teams
In 1975, women were added to the Judo program. As a team, the men and women at San Jose State University have set the pace for U.S. Judo and have become a leader in the sport both nationally and internationally. Coach Yosh Uchida's collegiate record is phenomenal. The San Jose State University Judo Team has won 36 out of 39 National Collegiate Team Titles. At the international scene, San Jose State University judokas have gained more medals (Olympic, World Championship, World University Game and Pan American Game Medals) than the rest of the United States.
