Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Judo A guide to the Olympic sport of Judo Technical details The terms used in Judo are based on Japanese words. The competition area for Judo is a raised wooden platform, 16m x 16m, covered with green mats of pressed foam (called tatamis). The action, however, takes place in the central contest area, which measures 10m x 10m, as well as a metre border called the 'danger zone.' Competitors wear 'judogis' which are white judo uniforms, tied with a red or white sash and there are strict regulations over size, length, width and fastenings. Scoring contests are controlled by a referee, two judges, two time-keepers and a list writer (who records the flow of the contest). Ippon scores (10 points) and is a winning move, consisting of throwing an opponent on their back, holding an opponent down for 30 seconds or stranglehold. If this move is made, the contest is immediately over. Below the Ippon are various moves which register a score: Waza-ari - (seven points) almost an Ippon and the bout is over if a player scores two. Yuko - (five points), an Ippon with two elements missing. Koka - (three points), which is a throw onto the thigh or buttocks or a hold for between 10 and 20 seconds. The following are penalties and result in competitors having scores registered against them: Hansoku make - highest penalty warning and merits disqualification. Other penalties are 'shido', 'chui' and 'keikosu' which are for moves such as false attacks, illegal leg and arm holds and any move which causes danger to the opponent's spine or neck.

Techniques or 'Waza' Kata and Randori The History of Judo ... Randori Rules
    Introduction to Judo
Martial arts or combat sports generally divide into three main types namely the punching and kicking ones such as boxing and Karate, the close quarter grappling ones such as wrestling and judo and the weapon ones such as fencing and Kendo. Judo was ‘invented’ in 1882 by a Japanese by the name of Jigoro Kano. However it was formed from a synthesis of Ju-jitsu styles, in particular the Kito and Tenjinshinyo styles. Jujitsu is the name for Japanese unarmed close-quarter fighting systems of which there were many in the late 1800s. The Japanese Samurai were trained to fight using a variety of weapons such as the sword and the spear but when it became close-quarter fighting the techniques of Ju-jitsu were used. For the most part the Ju-jitsu systems were grappling systems practised in pre-arranged sequences for safety. It could be said that Jigoro Kano created yet another Ju-jitsu style but his genius lay in recognizing that many of the Ju-jitsu techniques could be practised fairly safely. So in his system he created a competitive form of Ju-jitsu where the dangerous moves were banned (such as eye-poking) but retaining these dangerous techniques in the Kata or pre-arranged sequences of which there are seven. He called his system Judo to distinguish it from Ju-jitsu.

    JUDO About

Judo means "the gentle way" in Japanese. Of course, it is derived in part from jujitsu, the hand-to-hand combat technique of ancient samurai warriors, and everything is relative. While throwing opponents to the floor wins most matches, it is the only Olympic sport where submission holds allow choking an opponent or breaking an arm. Developed by Dr Jigoro Kano in the 1880s, the sport broke into the Olympic Games in 1964 at Tokyo. The host country could add one sport, and Japan chose judo. Four weight classes were established, and Japanese entries promptly won three. However, in the fourth, the open class, a 1.98-metre Dutchman named Anton Geesink defeated three-time Japanese national champion Kaminaga Akio before 15,000 people at Nippon Budokan Hall. And then he beat him again. It followed victories earlier in the year over other top Japanese opponents, deeply bruising the theory that a skilled judoka could defeat any opponent of any size.

Judo The Sport By : Fred G. Barnett Most people are no doubt familiar with the word judo, but how many can distinguish the difference between judo and other martial arts? My goal is to help you better understand what judo is and how the principles of the sport can benefit those who participate in it. First let me explain what the word "Judo" means. The word judo is written with 2 characters. The ju means "gentleness" or "giving way", and do means "principle" or "way" the way being the concept of life itself. The full translation of Judo is "the gentle way". If you have ever seen a judo competition you might ask yourself how can this sport be considered gentle. The best way to explain what you see at a judo practice or competition is to understand the principles and philosophies behind the techniques. Judo is a non-violent means of recreation and self-defense. Strength, technique and concentration as opposed to violence are the main focus. With each technique used in the sport of judo, there are two principles or philosophies that a good player keeps in mind: maximum efficiency with minimum effort and the harmonious development and eventual perfection of mankind. What do these mean and how can they be applied to everyday life?

Rules: Bouts last five minutes for men and four for women. A match can be one by a single point, which may be scored if one contestant throws his or her opponent to the mat so that the opponent's back strikes the canvas. If the throw is executed with perfect form, a point is awarded, and the match is over. If the form is not perfect, half a point may be awarded; another half can be gained by holding the opponent on the mat 20 seconds. Thirty seconds of holding is worth a full point as well. If no point is scored in the time allotted, the match goes to the person who has either a half point or who has accumulated the most credit. Bronze medals are awarded to each semifinal loser. http://before.ijf.org/general/gi-ht.html
Origin of Judo Judo was established in 1882 in Japan as a modern sport by Professor Jigoro Kano (1860- 1938) who was well aware of modern pedagogic and physical ideals. The formula of techniques of various jujitsu schools, which have been Japanese combative arts and systematized for hundreds of years were selected, refined, created and finally established as modern combative sports. Professor Kano devoted his life to the education and popularization of judo and laid the foundation of the present day judo. Since 1909, he contributed 30 years to the Olympic movement as collaborator of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. Judo, the only Olympic sport that originated in Asia, is unique and has a history of international character as an established sport, and it greatly owes to the personality and efforts of the founder, Jigoro Kano.
Judo has by now developed into a modern Olympic sport. The origin and development of judo as a combative sport demonstrates the superiority of techniques over strength. Thus, the modern judo was developed, respecting its technical system and combative method. In judo various creations of techniques are possible and, at the same time, necessary by means of "Standing" and "Ground". Also coordination of the opponent. These points have established judo as a modern and dynamic sport, possessing a strong fascination.
    IJF History
The foundation of an International Judo Organization was proposed by Jigoro Kano in the thirties. However, due to several reasons, it was not finalized until July, 1951, when the Congress of the European Judo Union established the International Judo Federation. In 1952, at the Congress of IJF in Switzerland, Mr. Risei Kano was appointed as President. Originally, IJF was composed of 13 member federations only from European countries. In the same year, in addition to that, 4 from Pan America, 1 from Oceania, 1 from Asia were affiliated to the IJF, which has led IJF to an international organization composed of 19 countries from four continents.

United States Judo Association Club for US Yudo Members The question often arises as to the relationship between ChungTongKwan Yudo, the traditional Korean military art practiced by the members of the International Yudo Federation, including US Yudo, and the Olympic sport practitioners represented in the United States by US Judo, Inc. (USJI), United States Judo Federation (USJF), and United States Judo Association (USJA). The question is a good one, and the correct answer may surprise many people. We enjoy a brotherly relationship. The sport of Judo and the military art of ChungTongKwan Yudo are fraternal twins. Our common parent is Kano Jigoro of Japan who is the Founder of the Oriental Art of Judo. During his lifetime, contrary to sport history revisionists, Kano was opposed to teaching the system he founded, Kodokan Judo, as a sport. After his death, however, his students modified Kano's self-defense art into an Olympic sport. Although seldom discussed, this was undoubtedly done, at least in part, in order to re-open the doors of the Kodokan. During the allied occupation, following the defeat and unconditional surrender of the Japanese in World War II, all martial arts training in Japan was ordered stopped. As a sports training center, however, the Kodokan could be open.
