Freshman captures national judo title for U.S. colleges By Beth Applebome Binghamton University freshman Dmitry Lisenenkov has taken first place in the Judo College Nationals, earning the right to compete in the World Judo University Games. The win at College Park, Texas, is the latest in a series for Lisenenkov, who hopes the effort will eventually lead to the Olympics. Lisenenkov said he is still waiting for details on where and when the World University games will be held. In the meantime, he plans to compete from April 31 through May 2 in the Senior Nationals. If Lisenenkov places in the top three in that competition, he can qualify for trials for the 1999 World Championships, which he hopes will lead to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. "My main goal is to get to the Olympics," he said. "Hopefully in 2000 or 2004." An immigrant to the United States from Minsk, Belarus at age 10, Lisenenkov had an early start in the sport. Soon after his family arrived in the United States, his parents enrolled him at AAA Olympic Sports Club, a judo club in Brooklyn. "My parents wanted me to be busy and stay off the streets," he explained. "I had nothing to say in it because I was too young."

President Putin is perhaps the most high-profile devotee of a sport which has its roots in the man-on-man fighting technique of Japan’s samurai warriors. It is one of two martial arts which are Olympic sports, the other being Taekwondo which is making its debut at the Sydney Games. Unlike boxing, the aim of judo is not to knock the opponent out, but to force them to submit by saying "maitta", meaning "I give up".

Club Judo - What is Judo?
Judo is many things to many people. It is a martial art developed in Japan in 1882. It has been an Olympic Sport since 1964. Judo is also a form of self-defense as well as a great form of physical fitness.
Judo comes from Japan and was founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano. Dr. Kano took what he felt were the best parts of the ancient martial art Jujitsu and created judo.
Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964 for men and 1992 for women and is practiced by millions of people throughout the world today. People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it.
As a sport like any other, Judo has a strict set of rules that govern competition and ensure safety. Judo offers the opportunity for competition at all skill levels, from club to national tournaments, to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. There are separate weight divisions for men and women, and boys and girls.
Judo is best known for its spectacular throwing techniques, but also encompasses grappling techniques such as pins, arm locks and choking techniques.

Buddhist monks in China, Japan, and Tibet developed jujitsu over a period of 2,000 years as a system of defense that could be used against armed marauders and yet would not be in conflict with their religion. Jigoro Kano, a Japanese jujitsu expert, created judo (1882) by modifying or dropping many holds that were too dangerous to be used in competition. It depends for success upon the skill of using an opponent's own weight and strength against him, thus enabling a weak or light individual to overcome a physically superior opponent. A judo match begins with a ceremonial bow, after which each player grasps the other by the collar and sleeve of the jacket, or gi.

Wrestling mom: How does that grab you? 09:21 PM CDT on Saturday, May 8, 2004 By CATHY HARASTA / The Dallas Morning News Moms everywhere have said it time and again: "Quit wrestling in the house!" But Kristie Marano will not spend Mother's Day telling her daughter, Kayla, 6, to take the sport outside. Marano, America's top woman wrestler and a reigning world champion, will spend the morning working out at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. "After the workout, Kayla and I will have the afternoon together," said Marano, the top seed in her weight class for the U.S. Olympic Wresting Trials May 21-23 in Indianapolis. "Kayla's funny. One day, she'll say she wants to wrestle. The next day, she doesn't." Women's wrestling will make its Olympic debut at this August's Athens Games. Marano, 25, wants to add an Olympic medal to her seven world medals.

Judo Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Judo, "the gentle way" is also a martial art, with its moves, practice and methods based on the skill to avoid an opponent's blows and attacks. "Giving way to the strength of the opponent, adapting to and using it to your advantage will achieve victory over the opponent", this is the essence of the sport, which was developed in Japan in the latter part of the 19 th century and early 20 th century. Jigoro Kano is credited with developing judo in Japan. Its techniques derived from martial arts developed over centuries in various " Ju jitsu " schools. Kano, in fact, devoted his life to promoting the sport and training new athletes. He was also a seminal member of the Olympic Movement as a member of the IOC for 30 years, beginning in 1909.
