History and philosophy
The early history of Judo and that of its founder, Japanese polymath and educator Jigoro KANO (1860-1938), are inseparable. Kano was born into a well-to-do Japanese family. His grandfather was a self-made man, a sake brewer from Shiga prefecture in central Japan; his father was not the eldest son and did not inherit the business, but became a Shinto priest and government official, with enough influence for his son to enter the second incoming class of Tokyo Imperial University. Kano was a small, frail boy, who even in his twenties did not weigh more than a hundred pounds, and was often picked on by bullies. He first started pursuing jujitsu, at that time a flourishing art, at the age of 17, but met with little success in part due to difficulties finding a teacher who would take him on as a serious student. When he went off to the University to study literature at the age of 18, he continued his efforts, eventually gaining a referral to Hachinosuke FUKUDA, ancestor of noted Japanese/American judoist Keiko Fukuda , one of Kano's oldest surviving students, a master of the Tenjin Shinyo Ryu. Fukuda is said to have emphasized technique over formal exercise, sowing the seeds of Kano's emphasis of randori, or free practice, in Judo.

And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
By Jonathon Kahn
Posted Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at 8:30 PM PT
The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Everyone's favorite is synchronized swimming, which

One such serviceman, Mr. Ernest Gainy, allowed Joe Caruana to join one of these classes in 1970; as Black Belt 1st Dan, Joe Caruana called the first informal Judo Committee at the Zabbar Physical Culture Club. Two students of Joe Caruana, Tony Tanti and Envic Galea opened three other Judo Clubs in 1971: Zebbug Judo Club, Royal University Judo Club and MCAST Polytechnic Judo Club. In 1973 the first National Championships were organized at the Malta Hilton, which had become and was to remain the official Headquarters of the Association. The winner of the Open Category was declared National Champion. These are organized every year. The progress of Judo in Malta was mainly due to the assistance of the British Forces, especially the 41 Commando Group who were to become very important in the MJA development. They assisted technically, and helped with competition officials and equipment. However, the biggest help, which moulded the character of Maltese Judo, came from the Italian Judo Federation. This started with the intervention of Dott. Maurizio Genolini, who happened to be also Vice President of the E.J.U. and Aw. Cerachini, President of the Italian Federation.

In 1922 judo founder Jigoro Kano resigned from his position as head of the Japan Amateur Athletic Association because he disagreed with its policy of encouraging professionals to enter international competition in hope of inflating Japanese medal counts. [ ] A few years later, Kano told Olympic leader Pierre de Coubertin that judo was inappropriate for inclusion in the Olympics because it was not a sport but a school of life: judo, said Kano, was not a game, but instead it was "like a church, it teaches a man a moral sense." [ ] In 1933, Kano told the young British judoka Trevor Leggett that, while he had nothing against competition, he was against championships; to his thinking, championships degraded people by placing too much emphasis on winning. [ ] Finally, during a luncheon speech given at the Pan-Pacific Club in Tokyo on June 14, 1935, Kano complained that "competition sometimes makes men go to extremes and results in their doing themselves serious internal injury."[ So, despite the International Olympic Committee announcing on March 16, 1938 that judo, kendo, and kyudo (Japanese archery) would be demonstration sports featured at the 1940 Olympics, [

History
Judo became an Olympic sport for men in 1964 and women's judo was a demonstration sport in 1988, preparatory to its being added to the Olympic program in 1992. In Olympic judo competition, there are two pools, each with its own single-elimination tournament. The two pool winners compete for the gold medal, with the loser winning the silver medal. In each pool, the competitors who lost to pool winner enter a repechage round for another single-elimination tournament. The winners of the repechage pools are awarded bronze medals. Weight limits have changed through the years. The limits shown are those used at the 2000 Olympics. Top of page History Biography Glossaries Calendar Quotations ... Directory

http://www.bstkd.com/JudoHistory/HistoryTen.htm
Part 10: Judo Becomes an International Sport The first World Championships were held in 1956 in Tokyo, with 31 contestants from 21 countries. The rapidly expanding popularity of Judo internationally justified the construction of a new Kodokan in 1958 in the Bunkyo-ku district of Tokyo, close to the former location in the Suidobashi district. Bunkyo-ku Kodokan built in 1958.
During this time, European Judo federations had been advocating weight divisions for international Judo competitions. The Kodokan resisted these efforts as not consistent with Judo's technical theory that weight and strength were irrelevant. So, at the 1956 World Championships, and the next two World Championships held in Tokyo, and then Paris, in 1961, international competitions were traditional "open" style, with no weight, rank, or age distinctions. The first World Championship was won by Shokichi Natsui, and the second by Yasuji Sone. In Paris, however, with 57 contestants from 25 countries, Anton Geesink of Holland won. This was a big shock for Japanese Judo. With a non-Japanese as World Champion for the first time, the International Judo Federation quickly agreed to recognize weight divisions in future world championships. At the1960 meeting of the International Olympic Committee, Judo was accepted as a demonstration sport for the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games. This was fitting, as Japan hosted the games in memory of the founder of amateur athletics in Japan, Jigoro Kano. The matches were held in the newly-constructed Nippon Budokan, and consisted of three weight divisions, light, middle and heavy, as well as an open category. The shocker again, for the Japanese, was Geesink's win in the open division over Akio Kaminaga.

This book surprised me at how good it was! It's a rare winning competitor who is also a competent instructor, and Dave Starbrook is apparently one of them. I found many interesting insights into Judo in this small book. Written very much in the style of Anton Geesink's book, or Yamashita's book; it is an autobiographical history of Starbrook's Judo. Many B/W photos, but the text is so good I found myself wishing for less photos and more text...

In this easy-to-follow and informative guide, Dave Starbrook, Britain's leading exponent of the sport, explains his techniques for success in judo. With the help of photographs and line drawings, he describes his favourite throws, attacking moves and combinations, his methods of groundwork, armlocks, strangleholds, defensive and counter moves. But judo is a sport in which each individual has to find the techniques which suit him best, and nobody knows this better than joint British team manager Dave Starbrook. So he also explains methods which other champion judoka (judo players) use, but which he found less rewarding.
