San Jose To Host Judo, Taekwondo Olympic Trials
POSTED: 12:09 pm PST December 17, 2003 SAN JOSE, Calif. The United States Olympic Committee announced Wednesday that the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for judo and taekwondo would take place in a two-sport competition June 5 at the San Jose State Event Center. This first-of-its-kind, dual-discipline format will feature American athletes vying for the honor of representing the U.S. at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In announcing that the "Road to Athens" would again take the U.S. judo and taekwondo hopefuls through San Jose, USOC Chief of Sport Performance Jim Scherr citeed the strong support of the region's residents for Olympic sports, adding, "We have great partners in the City of San Jose and the San Jose Sports Authority." In February 2003, the San Jose State Event Center was the multi-staged venue for the inaugural "Titan Games: The Road to Athens" featuring wrestling, boxing, fencing, judo, karate, taekwondo, weightlifting, and athletics (shot put). Elite athletes representing the United States and other world sports powers competed in the "USA versus the World" format in dual and triangular meets.

TeamStore The Pedros were golden in support Click here for more on this story Latest: Monday September 18, 2000 05:12 PM SYDNEY, Australia Today I owe a debt of thanks to the United States' first family of judo: the Pedros. These are pleasant, dedicated working-class people who hail mostly from different Massachusetts towns and have devoted their passion to throwing other people's weight around. It's also a debt of gratitude to the families of all Olympic athletes who never get enough credit for their 5 a.m. rises and the second jobs they hold down to pay for lessons in gyms, pools, rinks and tracks that are not as well kept or as glamorous as the Exhibition Hall, the judo venue to which James Pedro Jr. (a.k.a. Jimmy) caught the athlete shuttle bus on Monday. We scribes can be a cynical lot and when we write appropriately about doping tests and bidding scandals, we sometimes overlook the moonlighting and second mortgages that get the athletes here. We previewed Jimmy in our Sept. 11

Although Judo is a martial art, its practice and methods are based around gentleness. Giving way to the strength of the opponent, adapting to and using it to your advantage will achieve victory over the opponent. Jigoro Kano What is Judo , Kodokan, 1947. Description A main referee and two more judges arbitrate a Judo contest. All officials are of equal status and calls are decided by vote. The main referee calls all points and penalties while performing the designated hand gestures.
The two judokas Ippon (a degree equalling 10 points) by using a successful technique. If none of the judokas completes an Ippon by the end of the game, the winner is the one to have scored the greatest value point.
