Library of Faculty of Journalism at Kabul University Takes Shape - Updated: 28-06-2002 11:50 am
07-04-2002 10:00 pm After one month overseas on a UNESCO-funded rapid skills upgrading programme, Professor Hedayatullah Wafa, acting Dean of the Faculty of Journalism at Kabul University, and seven of his lecturer colleagues returned to Afghanistan to find a new Faculty library and UNESCO INFOYOUTH computer centre taking shape. Their month-long training stint at the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has inspired the Faculty staff to design new course modules for their students and introduce modern teaching techniques.
Their increased professionalism speaks much for the hard work of the talented team at the AIBD, one of the region's pre-eminent training institutions. But new techniques can only be put in practice if modern course materials and computer technologies are available. While the Faculty staff has been in Malaysia, the UNESCO Kabul office has renovated several rooms in the University to accommodate a specialised library of media/communication books, along with an "INFOYOUTH" Centre.
UNESCO's "INFOYOUTH" programme sets out to encourage young people, especially girls, to access computers, learn Internet and web-design skills and form linkages through the Internet with other young people in INFOYOUTH Centres throughout the world.
