Journal Writing Resources: Approaches To Journaling
Ira Progoff's Intensive Journal Seminar
Ira Progoff, a psychologist who studied under Carl Jung and D.T. Suzuki, has developed a method of structured journal writing that enables the writer to access the deeper layers of his or her consciousness. There are a number of different sections in the intensive journal, each of which mutually reinforces and deepens the exploration process. The method uses stillness, free association and a dialogue format to explore different dimensions of our lives. Some of the dialogue sections are dialogues with persons, works, the body, situations or society. Other sections include inner wisdom dialogue and work with dreams and twilight images. This process is described in the book At a Journal Workshop , by Ira Progoff. Seminars are given nationwide. (I have taken this seminar and have found it to be of incalculable value in my life). Ira Progoff has also written The Well and the Cathedral , which combines guided meditations and writing (very effectively I might add).

Abstract Numerous studies have shown no effect of journal writing on objective test scores. Most of these studies have used overall test scores as measures of journal-writing effectiveness. This paper reports the results of two studies that examined performance on specific test questions and related journal entries. We found that students who wrote journal entries on topics related to specific test questions were more likely to correctly answer those objective test questions than students who did not write on the topic. Introduction Instructors, teachers, professors, and educators at all levels struggle to make formal education a precursor to life-long learning. At the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), one of the educational outcomes states, "We want to develop an attitude of intellectual curiosity in our graduates that predisposes them to lifelong learning" (italics in the original). Many instructors have attempted to encourage critical thought, application of knowledge, and an attitude of intellectual curiosity through journal writing. The pedagogical benefit of journal writing is touted by many.

Journal writing is good therapy
Effective journal writing captures the essence of your thoughts, provides reflection, allows for creativity, sharper memories, good therapy, self examination, and spiritual direction for a more complete person.
Journal writing is a powerful tool for therapy, an excellent method for self examination and reflection especially for spiritual direction or development of self esteem and better self image. Journal writing allows for sharper clearer memories and diaries, but allows for more than reflections or recording daily memories, it allows for a new sense of direction and purpose. While diary writing can be equally important and can be a part of journal writing per se, there are other exercises that can be used with journals that can be very enriching. Looking at journal writing from three different perpectives, the diary method, the reality therapy method and the spiritual direction method, all illustrating effective means of writing different types of journals or integrating styles to have a more complete and complex journal. bodyOffer(20117) Reality therapy goes quite well with journaling in that it provides a daily record for you to track goals and accomplishments, as well as take a real look at what you are doing in life. Reality therapy asks four basic questions.

First, let me say that I am NOT a theripst, I am just an ordinary woman healing my wounds of sexual assault.
I started my site with the hopes that I could help heal myself, find some kind of comfort in "talking" out my feelings. And, very much to my suprise, it helped me alot. My wounds may never heal, but I have started the process of regaining my life. Taking back some of the control that I lacked for so long. I realize that I am now a SURVIVOR and no longer a victim.
With in my pages you will find my personal journal. To some, Im sure you can relate to some of my feelings, and others may learn that the healing process isnt a quick one. Its often a slow, painful process. Daily activities become disrupted, as well and emotional and something physical health.
It has been a very rough journey, and I couldnt have made it this far with out the help of my close friends, to them I owe my eternal gratitude.

Journal Writing
Written: July 10, 2000
Last Updated: November 5, 2002 There's one lesson to be learned from reading this article: Write in a journal! I've been writing in a journal since I was in ninth grade. The earliest dated entry was January 18, 1990, which is over ten years ago (today, my journal weighs in at over 9 megabytes)! Because of writing in my journal, I've been able to mark my progress mentally, physically, and emotionaly over that period of time. My journal is filled with its fair share of great accomplishments, depressing low points, and everything in between. Because of my journal, I'm able to look back on certain moments in my life and have them flash across my mind as if they happened yesterday. If you haven't found out already, your memory tends to fade rather quickly as you gain in years! Writing in a journal is an excellent means to capturing the moment, capturing your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

The Role of journal writing in Historical Thinking. By D. Antonio Cantu. The format with which I have had the most success is journal writing.
l From the Teaching column in the September 2000 Perspectives
The Role of Journal Writing in Historical Thinking
By D. Antonio Cantu "I think of writing as a way of seeing. It's a way of bringing out the specialness of ordinary things."
The format with which I have had the most success is journal writing. For me, journal writing seems an ideal instructional tool for taking students to higher order cognitive learning levels and for achieving many of the affective learning goals I have identified as requisite to deeper understanding. I have also found journal writing to be a very effective means for integrating all of the elements of historical thinking into my curriculum. When I speak of historical thinking, I am referring to the definition outlined in the National Standards for History , which includes the following components:
Chronological Thinking
  • Historical Comprehension Historical Analysis and Interpretation Historical Research Capabilities Historical Issues-Analysis and Decision-Making1
I never want to sacrifice content for process, and journal writing does not require that of those who choose to utilize it in the classroom. Another benefit of journal writing for me has been the tremendous flexibility inherent in its design. Journal writing activities can be assigned on a daily, weekly and/or semester basis and can be worked out in various formats: notebooks, index cards, typed documents, 3.5" computer disks, protected/secure web pages, and e-mail messages.

Ilona Leki, Editor
The chapters in this volume explore the international role of written English in the academic context and clearly demonstrate how writing is integrated in all aspects of academic communication in English. Writing from all over the world, the authors address how teachers of nonnative-English-speaking students can bring educational content and life experience into academic writing programs and, in turn, how TESOL can be included in mainstream academic programs.
The 12 innovative programs described differ in context but share basic assumptions about how best to teach L2 writing. These programs assume that important intellectual development can occur in L2 writing classrooms.
