Royalty in Jordan
At the start of the 19th century, Jordan belonged to the Ottoman Empire . For a brief time after World War I, it was part of the kingdom of Syria. Then it fell under the rule of Great Britain and became Transjordan, with Abdullah bin Al-Hussein as its emir. In 1946 the country gained its independence and became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, with Abdullah as its first king. In 1951 Abdullah was assassinated by a Palestinian who resented him for political reasons. The assassin also fired at the king's grandson Hussein, but the bullet bounced off a medal Hussein was wearing over his heart. After Abdullah's death, Hussein's father Talal ascended the throne. He was soon declared unfit to rule because of mental incompetence, and in 1952 the 16-year-old Hussein was proclaimed king of Jordan. A respected voice for peace in the Middle East, King Hussein ruled until 1999, when he died and was succeeded by his eldest son, King Abdullah II. King Abdullah and his wife, Queen Rania, have three children: Prince Hussein, Princess Iman, and Princess Salma. Currently the designated heir to the throne is the king's half-brother Crown Prince Hamzah, son of King Hussein and his final wife, Queen Noor.

Under the patronage of Queen Rania, the Embassy of Jordan, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, held a gala reception and a special musical performance by Jordanian pianist Zade Dirani, to mark the official launching of the Jordan expose at the National Museum of Natural History entitled "Celebrating Jordan's History and Culture" where a series of lectures and film on Jordan were held offering an opportunity to better understand Jordan's rich cultural treasures and heritage. The film, "Jordan: The Royal Tour" was viewed at the Baird Auditorium of the National Museum of Natural History. The audience enjoyed touring Jordan through the eyes of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein as he rides his motorcycle through the red and dusty desert. From the craggy peaks of Wadi Rum to the depths of the Red Sea, or the beauty of Petra and the Dead Sea to the Roman ruins of Jerash, or the rock formations at Wadi Mujib 1300 below sea level to encountering a Bedouin Camel Guard, the sights of Jordan are breath-taking. Following the film, lectures by renown experts discussed Jordanian archeology, modern Jordan, the great traditions of earth architecture, and museum conservators' efforts at saving the remarkable ancient relics of Jordan. Ms. Nihad Shabbar, who is on leave from her position as curator of the Museum of Jordanian Hertage of Yarmouk University spoke to the audience about the history of Jordan from an archeological perspective.

Contacts Program Introduction: Jordan's Social History Program was launched by Al-Urdun Al-Jadid Research Center (UJRC) in 1996 to raise further attention to the study of social movements and the history of the development of non-governmental organizations and municipalities, including educational, cultural and parliamentary institutions, and to compensate for the lack of concentration of historical sources on the political aspects of Jordan's contemporary history.
This program highlights the roots of Jordanian civil society organizations, examines their specific history, and paves the way to develop the field of historical studies, which in the past, suffered the absence of academic freedoms, and the appropriate political environment to allow the release of historical publications, which draw reconsiderations to the official "historical evidence." The field of historical studies also suffered due to the lack of historical books, which reflect the official perspective.
The program sets sights on broadening the field of research to include the important periods in Jordan's history, and to illustrate their backgrounds and social reflections, and to shed the light on the role of the various organizations that contributed to the formation, development, and character identification of the Jordanian society. The program also aims to focus on the social political history of important epochs in the Kingdom's history, which have not been given enough attention by historical references.

If someone can explain to me how "expansionist Israel" has "taken over" the Middle East, please email me! The Arab countries occupy 640 times the land mass as does Israel and outnumber the Jews of Israel by nearly fifty to one. So much for Arab propaganda! N ow notice the TOTAL area of Israel and Jordan . This was referred to as "Pal estine" and mandated under British administration following World War I (see next map below). How convenient that today's Arab propagandists forget that land east of the Jordan River was also part of "Palestine" and is, in fact, the Arab-Palestinian State!

The Jordan Valley provides archaeological evidence of occupation by Paleolithic and Mesolithic hunters and gatherers (people of Neolithic culture), similar to that found around the Mediterranean littoralin 8000B.C. This culture ended after 2000B.C, when large numbers of Semitic nomads, identified as the Amorites, entered the region which became known as Canaan.
The conflict between Egypt who attempted to regain control of Syria, and Hittites from Anatolia during the fifteenth to thirteenth centuries B.C bypassed the east bank of Jordan allowed for the development of a string of small tribal kingdoms with names familiar for the Old Testament: Edom, Moab, Bashan Gilead, and Ammon whose capital was the biblical Rabbath Ammon (modern Amman).
The History of the Jordan region over the next 2 centuries was one of constant conflict between the Jewish kingdoms and the kingdoms on the east bank. In 722B.C. Israel fell to the Assyrian king Shalmaneser. In 612B.C. the Neo-Babylonian Empire conquered Assyria in Mesopotamia. Within fifty years the Persian Cyprus conquered Babylon. Jordan region became part of the Achaemenid Empire.

Barbara Jordan
Politician The first African American elected to the Texas Senate since Reconstruction, Barbara Jordan went on to become a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. She mesmerized the nation during televised coverage of the House Judiciary Committee's investigation considering the impeachment of President Richard Nixon. Early Life On February 21, 1936, Barbara Charline Jordan was born to Benjamin Jordan, a warehouse clerk and part-time clergyman, and his wife, Arlyne Patten Jordan, in Houston, Texas. Barbara was raised in a time of segregation and Jim Crow laws. She lived with her parents, her two older sisters, Bennie and Rose Marie, and her grandfathers, John Ed Patten and Charles Jordan. Barbara's outlook on life as well as her strength and determination can be attributed to the influence of her maternal grandfather, John Ed Patten, a former minister who was also a businessman. While assisting him in his junk business, Barbara learned to be self-sufficient, strong-willed, and independent, and she was encouraged not to settle for mediocrity. Her determination to achieve superiority was quickly demonstrated in her early years.

JORDAN RIVER RESTORATION PROJECT BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY
In 1991 a $2.3 million damage settlement was awarded to the U.S. Department of the Interior in compensation for injuries to Federally protected trust resources (migratory birds, threatened and endangered species) caused by contamination of the Jordan River corridor from the Sharon Steel/Midvale Slag Superfund sites. Under Federal guidelines this damage settlement can only be used for "restoration" (i.e., to restore, rehabilitate, replace, and/or acquire the equivalent) of the Federal trust resources injured, destroyed, or lost as a result of the release of hazardous substances from these sites. Trust resources affected by these Superfund sites are primarily migratory birds of the Jordan River corridor, its floodplain, and all directly adjacent bottom lands and riparian/wetland habitats. Endangered, threatened, or proposed species found along the Jordan River include the bald eagle and the peregrine falcon. The primary goals of these three projects is to restore natural, functioning habitats along the Jordan River corridor and the trust resources which depend on those habitats. Prologue The Birth of the University Leland Stanford The Founding Grant ... Jane Stanford
Prologue
In November 1769, Captain Gaspar de Portola's expedition to find and fortify the port of Monterey for Spain found instead San Francisco Bay. The party worked its way down the peninsula and camped on the bank of San Francisquito Creek near the giant California Coast Redwood that later travelers came to call El Palo Alto, or "the high tree" in Spanish. The tall redwood was a familiar landmark to the native Ohlone Indians. From this campsite, on which one corner of the Stanford campus is now situated, Portola's reconnoitering parties explored the area. Later, from this same campsite, Francisco de Ortega explored the eastern shore of the Bay. The old redwood, twin-trunked and well over 100 feet high, was visible for miles. In 1876, former California Governor Leland Stanford purchased 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito for a country home and began the development of his famous Palo Alto Stock Farm for trotting horses. He later bought adjoining properties to bring his farm to more than 8,000 acres, land that eventually became the Stanford campus. The little town that started to grow across El Camino Real (the old Spanish "King's Road") from the university also took the name Palo Alto.

History of Jordan,
Jordan as Palestine
Two states for two people, Jordan must contribute
In the most extensive remarks to date on his proposed Middle East agreement, U.S. President Bill Clinton made a plea Sunday for peace, telling U.S. Jewish leaders their land also is the Palestinians' homeland and "there is no choice but for you to divide this land into two states for two people." Speech to the Israel Policy Forum, Jan 7, 2001 Yet Jordan is also Palestine. Here are two Jordanian State Stamps one from 1964, bearing the likeness of King Hussein and pictures Mandated Palestine as an undivided territory [All of Israel of today plus Jordan of today]..., the other a 1949 stamp pictures King Abdullah of the kingdom of Jordan and bears the label of Palestine in English and Arabic.
The land on which Israel was located contained only a fraction of the Palestine Mandate originally dedicated to the Jews as their homeland, incorporating the Balfour Declaration. The League of Nations and the British had designated the land called "Palestine" for the "Jewish National Home" east and west of the Jordan River from the Mediterranean to Arabia and Iraq, and north and south from Egypt to Lebanon and Syria.

Winter begins! The name "winter" comes from a Germanic term meaning "time of water" and refers to the seasonal precipitation. The winter solstice the moment when the sun's apparent path is farthest south from the Equator is used to officially mark winter's beginning. In the Northern Hemisphere, winter begins on the "shortest day" of the year, December 21 or 22, and lasts until March 20 or 22, the beginning of spring, marked by the vernal equinox, when day and night are equal in length. In the United States, this winter's solstice occurs on December 21 at 2:21 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, 7:21 P.M. Greenwich Mean Time. Those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, today celebrate the beginning of the summer season.
