Government and politics
A BRIEF HISTORY The Constitution The National Charter The Executive Branch ... The Judiciary A BRIEF HISTORY The Emirate of Transjordan was established in 1921 on the east bank of the Jordan River. It achieved independence from Britain in 1946 and became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, the east and west banks of the Jordan River were united in order to save the parts of Palestine which remained under Arab control after the 1948 war from further Israeli occupation. Unity was ratified and declared in 1950. Seventeen years later, the west bank was occupied by Israel during the 1967 war. In 1988, Jordan disengaged from the West Bank. Jordan has been ruled by three monarchs: H.M. King Abdullah Ibn Al Hussein (1921-1951), H.M. King Talal Ibn Abdullah (1951-1952), H.M. King Hussein Ibn Talal (1952- present). THE CONSTITUTION The constitution outlines the powers and functions of the state, enforcement of laws, interpretation of the constitution, emergency powers and constitutional amendments, and the separation of the legislative, executive and judicial branches. THE NATIONAL CHARTER In January 1991, the commission presented the draft charter to the King, and on June 9 it was approved by a national Jordanian congress of over 2000 popular representatives made up of elected figures, political activists, intellectuals and academicians.

State Entry Exit Combat Forces Population Losses Jordan Syria The 1967 defeat radicalized the Palestinians, who had looked to the Arab countries to defeat first the Yishuv (the Jewish community of Palestine before 1948), and after 1948 the State of Israel, so that they could regain their homeland. The PLO had no role in the June 1967 War. After the succession of Arab failures in conventional warfare against Israel, however, the Palestinians decided to adopt guerrilla warfare tactics as the most effective method of attacking and defeating Israel. In February 1969, Arafat (who remained the leader of Al Fatah) became head of the PLO. By early 1970, at least seven guerrilla organizations were identified in Jordan. One of the most important organizations was the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) led by George Habash. Although the PLO sought to integrate these various groups and announced from time to time that this process had occurred, they were never effectively united (see The Palestinians and the Palestine Liberation Organization , ch. 4).

Jordan's prime minister expected to resign
Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS International Monetary Fund (IMF) Government Jordan or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? AMMAN, Jordan (AP) Prime Minister Ali Abul-Ragheb, whose Cabinet has been accused of limiting public freedoms and doing too little to fight corruption, is expected to resign and open the way to new leadership, senior politicians said Monday. The politicians said King Abdullah II was likely to name a new prime minister rather than return Abul-Ragheb to his post. It is normal in Jordan for the prime minister to tender his resignation before the opening of a new parliament session, but the king can choose to reappoint the official. No date has been set for Jordan's 110-member parliament, elected in June, to convene, but it is expected to be in early December. The politicians told The Associated Press that the leading candidate to replace Abul-Ragheb is Faisal al-Fayez, a Royal Court minister from the Skhour tribe, one of Jordan's most prominent tribes with close ties to the royal Hashemite family. Abdullah was out of the country Monday.
