European Union financial assistance to Jordan MEDA programme The MEDA programme is the main financial instrument through which the EU implements the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, which was initiated at the Barcelona Conference in November 1995. It accounts for € 3.4 billion of budgetary resources (grants) allocated for the period 1995-1999 (MEDA I) and € 5.4 billion for the period 2000-2006 (MEDA II). Within the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, the EU-Jordan Association Agreement has been ratified by Jordan and by all EU Member States and has come into force on 1 May 2002. This Agreement replaces the EC-Jordan Cooperation Agreement of 1977. Under the MEDA programme Jordan has so far received, due to its advanced position in the implementation of the Association Agreement, to its absorption capacity and commitment to the Barcelona Process (broad trade liberalisation and related economic reforms), a total of € 423 million (€ 254 million under MEDA I and until now € 169 million under MEDA II), proving to be one of the better absorption capacity Mediterranean partners on a per capita basis.

Jordan government spokeswoman Asma Khodr told reporters on Tuesday "anti-terrorist" forces surrounded a building in the al-Hashimi al-Shamali neighbourhood after receiving a tip that a group of armed men planning "terrorist attacks" were hiding in the area. "The gunmen were ordered to surrender, but they fired on [security] forces, who returned fire, stormed the building and killed three suspects,” Khodr told reporters after a cabinet session. The fourth armed fighter, who was hiding in a tunnel inside the same building, was killed after he opened fire on the security forces, added the spokeswoman.

The city of East Jordan is located at the mouth of the Jordan River on the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix. When the village was incorporated in 1887it absorbed the village of South Arm and then incorporated as a city in 1911.
With a solid industrial base and a growing tourist trade the city of East Jordan is sure to continue to grow along with the rest of Charlevoix county. Also of note is the large park and marina area at the mouth of the Jordan river within walking distance of the downtown area.
The annual Freedom festival at the park and other annual events make this a very strong community and one that is easy to call home.

Establishment of a network of community telecenters in Jordan.
Jordan is embarking on a series of efforts to help the country become a regional leader and internationally recognized as an exporter of Information and Communication technologies (ICT) related products. Steps are being taken to increase investment in ICT related industries, further develop the needed human resources, and establish solid linkages between the educational system and the ICT industry. In addition, the Government is currently preparing a strategy for e-government which aims to provide government services on-line. His Majesty King Abdullah II is the leading advocate of a comprehensive integration of ICT into the socio-economic development of his country. Within this context and in order to ensure that human resources are developed in all parts of the Kingdom and that ICT is in fact used to provide a better quality of life, a national strategy to establish a network of Jordanian Information Technology Community Centers (JITCC) covering the entire country. UNDP is the principal partner of the Jordanian Government in this programme. which will involve private sector and civil society as well. UNDP is assisting the Government in planning the physical rollout of the centers, the strategies on content development and provision, training and outreach to the communities, and establishing business plans to ensure economic-social stainability of the Centers. Volunteers will work in the JITCCs to help them provide the following services:

    Jordan - Government
In 1991 Jordan and the PLO had agreed on the principle of confederation between Jordan and whatever Palestinian entity ultimately emerged from the Middle East peace process.
In mid-July 1993 Jordan and the PLO had agreed to form six committees to discuss relations between Jordan and the Occupied Territories during a period of transitional Palestinian self-rule.
In addition to foreign arrivals, Jordan received large numbers of its own nationals fleeing from the Gulf region.
About 300,000 of these expatriates remained in Jordan after the liberation of Kuwait in February 1991, as the rulers of Kuwait had regarded most Jordanian and Palestinian residents as collaborators with the Iraqi occupation forces.
While Jordan welcomed the agreement concluded between Israel and the PLO as progress towards regional stability, it remained concerned by aspects of the Declaration of Principles which affected it directly and over which it had not been consulted.
In January 1994, after King Hussein had twice warned that Jordan might otherwise pursue its own agenda in the ongoing peace negotiations with Israel, the PLO agreed to sign a comprehensive economic co-operation agreement with Jordan, and to establish a joint committee to coordinate financial policy in the Occupied Territories.

    Jordan - History
Palestine (including the present-day West Bank of Jordan) and Transjordan (the East Bank) were formerly parts of Turkey´s Ottoman Empire.
During the First World War (1914-18), when Turkey was allied with Germany, the Arabs under Ottoman rule rebelled. British forces, with Arab support, occupied Palestine and Transjordan in 1917-18, when the Turks withdrew.
When the British Government terminated its mandate in Palestine in May 1948, Jewish leaders in the area proclaimed the State of Israel, but Palestinian Arabs, supported by the armies of Arab states, opposed Israeli claims and hostilities continued until July.
Transjordan's forces occupied about 5,900 sq km of Palestine, including East Jerusalem, and this was confirmed by the armistice with Israel in April 1949. In June the country was renamed Jordan, and in April 1950, following a referendum, King Abdullah formally annexed the West Bank territory, which contained many Arab refugees from Israeli-held areas.
In July 1951 King Abdullah was assassinated in Jerusalem by a Palestinian Arab belonging to an extremist Islamic organization. The murdered king was succeeded by his eldest son, Talal ibn Abdullah, hitherto Crown Prince.
