GEOGRAPHY
The territory of Jordan covers about 91,880 square kilometers. Until 1988, when King Hussein relinquished Jordan's claim to the West Bank, that area was considered part of Jordan, although only officially recognized as such by Britain and Pakistan. At that time the West Bankwhich encompasses about 5,880 square kilometershad been under Israeli occupation since the June 1967 War between Israel and the states of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Jordan is landlocked except at its southern extremity, where nearly twenty-six kilometers of shoreline along the Gulf of Aqaba provide access to the Red Sea. A great north-south geological rift, forming the depression of Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee), the Jordan Valley, and the Dead Sea, is the dominant topographical feature. Data as of December 1989

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Location: Southwest Asia Southwest Asia , or West Asia , is the southwestern part of Asia. The region is sometimes considered synonymous with the Middle East, but usually the term Middle East includes North African countries or at least the part of Egypt in North Africa. Geographers that were annoyed with the ambiguity of the term "Middle East" tried to popularize the word "Southwest Asia", but with little success. The term "West Asia" has become the preferred term of use in countries such as India, possibly because of the perceived Eurocentrism of the term "Middle East".

Considered to be one of the fifteen states that comprise the so-called " Cradle of Humanity The term Cradle of Humanity seems to have originated in Mesopotamia in the second century where it was used by early Arab Christians to refer to a geographic area that falls within a 1,000 mile radius of the spot they believed to be the birthplace of humankind. Since then, the term is used not only in religious, but also in secular and scientific contexts, and may therefore refer to different locations, depending on the religious, secular or scientific views of the user.

A pragmatic ruler, he successfully navigated competing pressures from the major powers (US, USSR, and UK), various Arab states, Israel, and a large internal Palestinian population, through several wars and coup attempts. In 1989 he resumed parliamentary elections and gradually permitted political liberalization; in 1994 a formal peace treaty was signed with Israel.
