Geography
The territory of Jordan covers about 91,880 square kilometers. Until 1988, when King Hussein relinquished Jordan's claim to the West Bank, that area was considered part of Jordan, although only officially recognized as such by Britain and Pakistan. At that time the West Bankwhich encompasses about 5,880 square kilometershad been under Israeli occupation since the June 1967 War between Israel and the states of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Jordan is landlocked except at its southern extremity, where nearly twenty-six kilometers of shoreline along the Gulf of Aqaba provide access to the Red Sea. A great north-south geological rift, forming the depression of Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee), the Jordan Valley, and the Dead Sea, is the dominant topographical feature. Boundaries

JORDAN GEOGRAPHY Jordan covers an area of about 37square miles. It is bordered by Syria to the north, Iraq and Saudi Arabia on the east, Saudia Arabia on the south and Israel on the west. The central spine of the country, the highland plateau and hilly region that runs from north to south, includes the main cities and towns, such as Amman, Irbid, Jerash, Madaba and Kerak. To the west, the Great Rift Valley runs the entire length of the country, and includes the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, the Wadi Araba and the Aqaba area around the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea. The eastern desert area is a semi-arid steppe which receives little rainfall. Jordan can be divided into four major regions; Each of these distinct geographical zones varies considerably in climate, water resources, habitation and ecology: The Eastern Heights or Plateau
The Jordan Valley
The Eastern Desert
The Wadi Arabah Other subject headings include: History
Weather
Flora and Fauna
Food
Religion
Pictures Plateau The Eastern Heights or Plateau runs from the Yarmouk river and the Syrian Border in the north and declines in altitude as it extends south. The plateau can be divided into zones on the basis of the major wadis which dissect it (east to west), with the major wadis being (from north to south) Wadi Yarmouk, Wadi Zarqa, Wadi Mujib, Wadi Kerak, Wadi Hasa, and then a series of lesser wadis which flow into the Wadi Arabah, which include the Wadi Dana and Wadi Es Shaqir which are the eastern portion of the Feinan wadi system. The traditional names of sections of the plateau stem from biblical texts and are often referred to as Ammon, Moab, Edom. The area referred to as Ammon, is the area of the plateau north of the Wadi Mujib. The area of Moab is that which lies between the Wadi Mujib and the Wadi Hasa. The area of Edom is the area south of the Wadi Hasa.

Here's yet another view The Dead Sea The Dead Sea, unlike the Sea of Galilee to the north, does not figure prominently in the biblical narratives. Its most important role was as a barrier, blocking traffic to Judah from the east. An advancing army of Ammonites and Moabites apparently crossed a shallow part of the Dead Sea near En Gedi on their way to attack King Jehoshaphat (2 Chron 20). Why BiblePlaces.com?

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: For most of its history since independence from British administration in 1946, Jordan was ruled by King HUSSEIN (1953-1999). A pragmatic ruler, he successfully navigated competing pressures from the major powers (US, USSR, and UK), various Arab states, Israel, and a large internal Palestinian population, through several wars and coup attempts. In 1989 he resumed parliamentary elections and gradually permitted political liberalization; in 1994 a formal peace treaty was signed with Israel. Environmental Threats and the Jordanian Response
The National Strategy presents specific recommendations for Jordan on a sectoral basis, addressing the areas of agriculture, air pollution, coastal and marine life, antiquities and cultural resources, mineral resources, wildlife and habitat preservation, population and settlement patterns, and water resources. The plan places considerable emphasis throughout on the conservation of water and agriculturally productive land, of which the contamination or loss of either would bring swift and significant consequences to Jordan.
Wildlife Conservation The diversity of animals in Jordan was formerly much more varied than at present. Ancient rock drawings and Byzantine mosaics suggest that the Jordanian landscape was populated by an abundant variety of wildlife, including ostrich, gazelle, Arabian oryx, Nubian ibex, Asiatic lion, Syrian bear and Fallow deer. It is also believed that crocodiles used to inhabit the Jordan River. However, many of these species have been either decimated or driven to extinction because of overhunting or habitat destruction. The hunting of gazelle and other wildlife dates back to the beginning of the Paleolithic era in Jordan, many thousands of years ago. However, the advent of automatic weapons and hunting from vehicles decimated the populations of larger mammals, particularly carnivores which were always present in low density. Hunting is now carefully controlled by the

    JORDAN
    Jordan / Geography
Situated near the southeastern coast of the Mediterranean, Jordan shares borders with Syria to the north, Iraq to the east, the West Bank and Israel to the west, and Saudi Arabia to the east and south. The land of Jordan and its people have been molded by centuries of passing civilizations. Jordan has always been at a cross-road between east and west, and its centrality has given it strategic and economic importance, making it a vital trading and communication link between countries, people and continents. Jordan is a small country of 92,300 square kilometers (57,354 square miles) that can be crossed by car in approximately four hours. However, its diverse terrain and landscape impart a feeling of it being larger than it actually is.
