AWAY FROM US
B ack when my brother, Eliot, and I took over the furniture business that our grandfather had founded in 1928, our father said something that I thought was wise. He said that he would always be there for us if we needed him, but that the business was ours to run and that we were in charge.
Early on, for example, we decided to focus on a segment of the market that was then largely being ignored: younger customers aged 18 to 34 who were acquiring homes and starting families, and who, therefore, very much needed furniture.
That intangible is simply the sum of a number of elements that, when combined, makes an enterprise unique. At Jordan's Furniture, in other words, we have created not only a business but also a "culture."
Culture is Critical
Just how important culture is can be illustrated with a landmark development for our company. Three years ago, a gentleman who was in town for a board of directors meeting at Boston-based Gillette Co. gave us a call and said he wanted to talk. The gentleman was legendary investor Warren E. Buffett, and what he wanted to talk about was buying Jordan's Furniture.

Tuesday, March 20, 2001 Scenarios Jordan 2020 explores culture, economy, society, politics in coming decades
By Hada Sarhan AMMAN — A one-day seminar titled `Scenarios Jordan 2020' aimed at exploring Jordan's future through an investigation of culture as an internal dynamic of collective social awareness was held on Sunday at Princess Sumaya University College for Technology (PSUCT). The seminar is the second in a series that explores future scenarios for natural and human resources, economics, society and culture. Future studies enable decision makers to form strategic decisions that could deal with what might happen and plan accordingly, say experts. "These scenarios are not predictions, but rather perceive futures in the present," said former minister Hani Mulki. "Scenarios are the most powerful vehicles for challenging our models. A good scenario is the one that is plausible and internally consistent," said Mulki. Anwar Zu'bi, a member of the cultural committee involved in organising Scenarios Jordan 2020, proposed three suggestive scenarios: Prevalent, modern and innovative. According to Zu'bi, the discussions on future cultural scenarios should focus on issues such as the symbiotic relationship between culture and religions; ideological choices; the relationship between the Arab world and its regional and global context; the universality of values; the future of education and enhancing contemporary culture; patriarchy vis–à-vis globalisation and political and economic liberalisation; the role of civic institutions; peace and the role of power in protecting peace; pan-Arab national security; and social equilibrium.

Oct, 1998 by Mohanna Haddad
At the beginning of the 19th century, the Christian population of the area now called Jordan (then part of the Ottoman dominion of Southern Syria) was nearly all Greek Orthodox, linked with the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem.(1) By the end of the century, this church would face the challenge of Roman Catholic and Protestant missionaries; in the first half of the 20th century, the Greek Catholic Church entered Jordan, and later Baptists and Seventh-day Adventists began missionary work in the country. All of these missionaries were meant to go and preach to non-Christians. In fact, all of them relied on attracting adherents from the Greek Orthodox Church. Their work was encouraged by internal factors in the tribal structure of the society, which led people to seek solutions to some of the limitations imposed by the Greek Orthodox Church in matters of marriage and inheritance. Others were drawn by the aid in goods and services which the missionaries offered. After the first world war, Jordan was established as a state and work began on the formulation of a constitution. The drafters of the constitution regarded Christians in Jordan as citizens and left their religious organization to the various existing churches. At that time the population of Jordan was estimated at 225,000, about 4 percent of whom were Christians, mostly Greek Orthodox.
