PEOPLE AND CULTURE
In 1990 the United Nations estimated the population of Jordan at 4 million people . About one fifth live on the West Bank of the Jordan river. Since the wars of 1948, 1967, and the war in The Lebanon, about 1.3 million people have been registered as refugees by the UNRWA. Officially, the number of Palestinian refugees is lower than 50%, but according to unofficial estimates the exact number might be around 60%. Jordan is the only Arab country that grants Palestinian refugees full citizenship. Thanks to the common religion (Islam) and the common language (more than 90% of the people are Arabs) there is in fact little difference between the refugees and the local Jordanians. However, during political crises hidden differences tend to become more apparent. The largest ethnic minority are the 35.000 Circassians who emigrated to Jordan from the Caucasus at the end of the 19th century. In Jordan also live small groups of Armenians, Kurds and Turks. Since a few years the number of foreign workers from Egypt, South-East Asia and the Indian subcontinent has been growing. About 93% of the population are Sunni Muslims . The most important religion in Jordan is Islam . Most Jordanian Muslims, including the non-Arab Circassians, belong to the Sunni sect of Islam. Islamic law forbids eating pig and drinking alcohol, and this law is followed to a greater or lesser (generally lesser) extent throughout Jordan. Islam also has a tendency to divide the sexes, and you might find that many eating establishments only welcome men. Most of these will, if asked, show you to the 'family room', an area set aside for women. In the area close to the Syrian border live the Druses, whose ancestors left the mainstream Islam faith and founded their own belief under the guidance of Ismail al-Darazis.

43. Culture
The majority of the population (95%) are Muslim. The rest of jordan s populationare Arab Christians. 95% of the population of jordan are Muslims.
http://www.mota.gov.jo/CAT5_01.HTM
Religion
The state religion is Islam, as indicated in the constitution. The majority of the population (95%) are Muslim. The rest of Jordan's population are Arab Christians. Freedom of worship, opinion and association are guaranteed by the constitution. You are likely to hear the call to prayer (known as Athan) echoing out. Muslims are required to pray five times a day. It is not compulsory to go to the mosque to pray, although Muslims try to go at least on Friday. You will see the devout unrolling small prayer rugs wherever they are, facing the direction of Mecca.
95% of the population of Jordan are Muslims. Those include other Non-Arab Minorities such as the Circassians and Chechen who fled to Jordan towards the end of the 19th Century. The Rest of the population are Arab(mainly Greek Orthodox or Catholic) and Armenian Christians. They tend to live in Amman, Kerak, Madaba, Ajlun and Salt. About half of the Christian community follow the Eastern Orthodox rite, headed by the Patriarch of Jerusalem. You will hear the call to prayer five times a day as in all Muslim countries:
at Fajr-(The dawn prayer) Thuhur (Noon); Asr (The late afternoon prayer); Maghrib (The sunset prayer); and Isha (The night prayer). It is rare today to have the mu'azzein himself calling from the top of the minaret; he has been replaced by a loudspeaker and a tape recorder.

Unlike the 7th millenniun in which the entire Levant was characterized by the same Pre-Pottery Neolithic B tradition; in the 6th millennium the Levant is characterized by regional cultures. In this period we also observe a decline in the amount of obsidian and other raw material transfer in the region. It appears to be a time of cultural segregation where all the sites emphasized themselves by distinct elements of its material culture ..... Excavations at Yarmukian sites and other Pottery Neolithic sites as well usually yielded pits without buildings. This gave a general impression of

Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts Queen Noor, with a committee of volunteers supported by staff and students from Yarmouk University, launched the first Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts in 1981. Since then, the Festival has become an annual cultural landmark in Jordan, attracting hundreds of artists and tens of thousands of visitors every year. The annual Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts is officially opened with the lighting of the torch by Her Majesty Queen Noor at the center of the historic Roman city. The Jerash Festival traces its roots to the reign of Roman Emperor Trajan (A.D. 98 - 117), who, according to an inscription at Jerash (ancient Gerasa), inaugurated an annual contest-festival held in the South Theater, then the most splendid of its kind in the province. The inscription alludes to the contest of the "sacred guild of the ecumenical, victorious, crowned artists in the service of Dionysus and of our Lord." Such festivals had long been a feature of prominent cities across the Greco-Roman world and gave stimulus to the patronage of the arts. The Festival is the first of its kind to have two fully-functioning Roman theaters; the North Theater, which is referred to as an "Odeum" (a recital hall) and the South Theater.

Jordan History and Culture
History The territory constituting modern Jordan was the site of some of the earliest settlements and political entities known to historians. The Ammonites and the kingdoms of Edom, Gilead, and Moab, situated east of the Jordan River, are referred to repeatedly in the Bible. These kingdoms were successively conquered by, or made tributary to, the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Romans. Jordan was wrested from the Byzantine Empire by the Arabs between 633 and 636 and has since remained an Arab-Islamic country. During the Crusades parts of Jordan were governed by Christians. From 1517 until 1918 Jordan was ruled by the Ottomans (see Ottoman Empire).

Country Profile

Flag of Jordan Background:
For most of its history since independence from British administration in 1946, Jordan was ruled by King HUSSEIN (1953-99). A pragmatic ruler, he successfully navigated competing pressures from the major powers (US, USSR, and UK), various Arab states, Israel, and a large internal Palestinian population, through several wars and coup attempts. In 1989 he resumed parliamentary elections and gradually permitted political liberalization; in 1994 a formal peace treaty was signed with Israel. King ABDALLAH II - the eldest son of King HUSSEIN and Princess MUNA - assumed the throne following his father's death in February 1999. Since then, he has consolidated his power and established his domestic priorities, including an aggressive economic reform program. Jordan acceded to the World Trade Organization in January 2000, and signed free trade agreements with the United States in 2000, and with the European Free Trade Association in 2001.

The caves, eleven in total, are arranged in two ranks at the actual cliff face and are thought to have been hewn by hand.

The New Christian Right, in its attempts to stem the tide of degeneracy in American life, is a Baptistic movement, and...finds itself in a condition of crisis, confusion, and indeed impotence. The thesis the editors are setting forth...is that American Christianity must return to a full-orbed Biblical and Reformed theology, and set aside Baptistic individualism, if it is to have anything to say to modern problems-indeed, if it is to survive.
Most Christians who have wrestled with the question of infant baptism (or paedobaptism), over against professor's baptism (the Baptist position), have noticed that each side seemingly has strong Biblical arguments for its case. For several centuries, theologians and preachers have hurled Bible texts and theological arguments back and forth, without convincing either side...
