Country Info Jordan Introduction Jordan General Data Jordan Maps Jordan Culture ... Jordan Time and Date Jordan Culture Back to Top In the late 1980s, class polarization was increasingly evident. Nonetheless, a variety of social forces (such as national identity and regional or tribal affiliation) continued to cut across class lines. The uprooting of so many East Bank citizens from their places of origin contributed to social fragmentation. In addition to the Palestinians, who retained a strong sense of national identity and outrage at the loss of their homeland, many Transjordanians had migrated from their rural and or desert villages to urban centers in search of work for themselves and education for their children. Many Transjordanians thus shared a sense of loss and rootlessness. Probably the most important force supporting cohesion and integration was the Arab-Islamic cultural tradition common to all but a few members of the society. Arabic, a potent force for unity throughout the Middle East, was the mother tongue of the overwhelming majority of residents. Also, more than 90 percent of the population adhered to Sunni Islam. These commonalities, although important, have been insufficient to forge an integrated society. Every year since the late 1950s, increasing numbers of Jordan's youth have received formal training in the country's rapidly expanding education system. By the late 1980s, all children aged six years to twelve years were attending free and compulsory primary schools. Nearly 80 percent of children between the ages of thirteen and fifteen attended three-year preparatory schools, also free and compulsory. But possession of an education, once a near certain vehicle for upward mobility, no longer guaranteed employment. Unemployment was probably one of the most critical issues facing Jordan in the late 1980s. It was accompanied by growing political frustration and radicalization over the Palestinian uprising (intifadah) in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Introduction to the food culture and recipe for Mansaf, a lamb dish.

Food
Traditional Meals Feasting: Jordan's Gastronomic Adventure W ithin Jordan, mealtime is not merely a biological function, but, rather, a time of celebration. In culinary terms, Jordan has many influences from Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, and as such enjoys one of the world's most sophisticated and elaborate cuisine's. The rich Jordanian food coupled with the famous Jordanian hospitality creates an atmosphere of festivities each time a meal is served. There is a wide variety in the Jordanian style of cooking. The authentic Jordanian cuisine can range from grilling (shish kababs, shish taouks) to stuffing of vegetables (grape leaves, eggplants, etc.), meat, and poultry. Also common in the Jordanian style of cooking is roasting, and/or preparing foods with special sauces. No matter what the style of cooking, Jordanian cuisine promises to satisfy anybody's taste buds. Mealtime in Jordan is not merely a biological function, but, rather, a social event. Jordanians are generally grouped during meal time and are presented with food in a collective manner. The food was displayed with grand recipients- such as Mansaf, freekie, and stuffed or whole lamb. The guests would stand as a communal group and share from the one large portion. Today, the food has remained the same, but people have adapted to portion control and individualized food presentation. The same grand recipient is presented. However, guests fill their personal plates with the portion needed. The use of modern utensils in food handling is the norm.

Amman culture. jordan is part of the eastern Mediterranean weathersystem and boasts one of the world s most pleasant climates.
http://www.mideasttravelling.net/jordan/amman/amman_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Amman - Culture Jordan is part of the eastern Mediterranean weather system and boasts one of the world's most pleasant climates. There are marked seasonal contrasts, however. Summers are dry and warm-to-hot and winters are wet and cool-to-cold, with occasional snowstorms. In the highlands there are often strong, cool breezes on summer nights and the low-lying areas enjoy pleasant, moderately cool winters. Archaeological cave excavations north of Amman indicate that both conquering and indigenous people have populated Jordan for the last 100,000 years. Called Philadelphia during Graeco-Roman rule, it is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the region with a number of ancient sites, such as an Odeon, a 6000-seater amphitheatre, a temple of Hercules and a Roman citadel. Thirty miles from Amman is the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth at 400 meters below sea level and believed to be the site of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. To the south, are the ruins of the 2000-year-old city of Petra, carved out of sandstone cliffs and used in the final sequence of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Further south are more historical sites including a 12th-century crusader castle and Wadi Rum, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. Amman has grown quickly after World War II, much because of the influx of Palestinian refugees.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Aqaba - Culture G reatly cherished as the only outlet to the sea, the port city of Aqaba located at the southern western point of Jordan provides a breath of fresh air and the only real beach resort to Jordanians and tourists alike who flock there in their droves. Best known for its clean sandy beaches, Aqaba also boasts nine months of mild summer weather during autumn, winter and spring. When temperatures reach a chilly 10 degrees Celsius in Amman, the temperature in Aqaba can be an envious 25 degrees Celsius. Summer is hot though and activities should adapt to the climate, slowing down in midday and reviving in the cool of the evening. When fantasy, sun and sea meet the charms and atmosphere antiquity, the visitor can find himself, at any time of the year, at the Red Sea resort of Aqaba. For water sports and winter warmth, Aqaba is warm, sunny and inviting, fringed with palm trees, lapped by the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Aqaba, cooled by a steady northerly breeze, and ringed by mountains that change in colour with the change of the hours. Life in Aqaba moves at a slower pace and is the perfect location to unwind and enjoy a tranquil holiday far from the crowds. You'll return home relaxed after spending your

Honor Killings in Jordan
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 297 Words Author : James Emery
James Emery is an anthropologist and journalist. Information for this article was obtained through interviews and research conducted in North America, West Asia, and the Middle East. The names of some of the Palestinians interviewed were changed to protect their identities.
There are many laws that influence honor killings, from shari'a (Islamic law) to ancient Bedouin traditions. Article 340 of the Jordanian Penal Code states, "He who discovers his wife or one of his female relatives has committed adultery and kills, wounds, or injures one or both of them, is exempted from any penalty."
When international human rights organizations attempted to cancel or modify Article 340, Americans and Israelis were accused of trying to erode Arab morals and destroy families. Sixty-two percent of Jordanians opposed amending the article. Bedouin tribesmen, who have significant influence on Jordan's eighty-member Chamber of Deputies, believe the law is necessary to maintain the chastity of their women. The elite of society have a vested interest in appeasing the underclass and maintaining the status quo.
