Aboard Air Force One., 11/22/1963 (National Archives) Lyndon Baines Johnson, often referred to as LBJ, was the 36th (1963-1969) President of the United States. He took office after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (JFK). His was a tragic presidency because he brought to the office enormous political skills and high ideals but was brought down by a few glaring flaws. Johnson had huge ambition and mostly high ideals, combined with a more thorough knowledge of how to get legislation through the U.S. Congress than any president has ever had. He had no hobbies, and other than his own immediate family, no real interests outside politics.

LYNDON B. JOHNSON 36th President of the United States Known as a politician's politician, Lyndon Baines Johnson had been a powerful member of the Democratic party for over a two decades when he challenged John Kennedy for the presidential nomination in 1960. Kennedy got the nod, and picked Johnson as his running mate. As fate would have it, Kennedy was killed on November 22, 1963 and LBJ became President. Easily re-elected in 1964, LBJ was able to pass sweeping social legislation including the the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. His decision to escalate American involvement in Vietnam, however, proved to be extremely unpopular. He chose not to seek another term and retired in 1969; he was succeeded by Republican Richard M. Nixon

American President Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1908-1973
America's 36th President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, known throughout his political career as LBJ ascended to office as the grim successor to John F. Kennedy mere hours after the assassination of the beloved 35th President. Overshadowed by the legacy of a martyred leader and inheriting the Vietnam War, Johnson's accomplishments in the advancement of civil rights, space exploration and social support changed the America of the second half of the 20th century. Lyndon B. Johnson died of a sudden heart attack in 1973 at the age of 64. Born in Gillespie County, Texas on August 27th, 1908 Lyndon Baines Johnson was the first of 5 children of Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Rebekah Baines. Despite prominent family backgrounds, Sam's family having founded Johnsonville Texas and Rebekah the college educated daughter of prominent statesman Joseph Baines, the Johnsons were poor. Sam Johnson had lost most of his money in speculation of cotton, and Lyndon was born in a 3-room frame house. Sam Johnson's fortunes gradually improved and he served as a member of the Texas state legislature.

, thirty-sixth president of the United States . Born in Stonewall, Texas, Johnson began his career as a speech and debate teacher. In 1937 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a New Deal Democrat. He joined the U.S. Senate in 1948 and served as majority leader from 1955 to 1961. After losing the 1960 presidential nomination to John F. Kennedy, Johnson agreed to run as vice president, and the Kennedy-Johnson ticket narrowly won the election of 1960 . Johnson succeeded to the presidency following Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963. He obtained support for civil rights legislation in 1964, and after his landslide victory in the presidential election of 1964 , he convinced Congress to pass his domestic programs for a Great Society . But his popularity waned because of his escalation of the Vietnam War . Johnson astounded the nation when he decided not to run for reelection in 1968 and retired to his ranch at Johnson City, Texas.

Lyndon B. Johnson cared deeply about our country, its citizens, and the condition of their lives. He knew well how to translate concern into action, and action into a national agenda. Lyndon B. Johnson - We Shall Overcome March 15, 1965 Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, members of the Congress, I speak tonight for the dignity of man and the destiny of Democracy. I urge every member of both parties, Americans of all religions and of all colors, from every section of this country, to join me in that cause. At times, history and fate meet at a single time in a single place to shape a turning point in man's unending search for freedom. So it was at Lexington and Concord. So it was a century ago at Appomattox. So it was last week in Selma, Alabama. There, long suffering men and women peacefully protested the denial of their rights as Americans. Many of them were brutally assaulted. One good mana man of Godwas killed. There is no cause for pride in what has happened in Selma. There is no cause for self-satisfaction in the long denial of equal rights of millions of Americans. But there is cause for hope and for faith in our Democracy in what is happening here tonight. For the cries of pain and the hymns and protests of oppressed people have summoned into convocation all the majesty of this great governmentthe government of the greatest nation on earth.

Presidency
Johnson lost the 1960 Democratic presidential nomination to John F. Kennedy , but accepted Kennedy's offer of the vice-presidential position. Elected with Kennedy, he energetically supported the President's programs, serving as an American emissary to nations throughout the world and as chairman of the National Aeronautics and Space Council and of the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunities. After Kennedy's assassination on Nov. 22, 1963, Johnson was sworn in as president and announced that he would strive to carry through Kennedy's programs. Congress responded to Johnson's skillful prodding by enacting an $11 billion tax cut (Jan., 1964) and a sweeping Civil Rights Act (July, 1964). In May, 1964, Johnson called for a nationwide war against poverty and outlined a vast program of economic and social welfare legislation designed to create what he termed the Great Society . Elected (Nov., 1964) for a full term in a landslide over Senator Barry Goldwater New Deal . A bill providing free medical care (Medicare) to the aged under Social Security was enacted, as was Medicaid; federal aid to education at all levels was greatly expanded; the Voting Rights Act of 1965 provided new safeguards for African-American voters; more money went to antipoverty programs; and the departments of

Description
Each volume in the American Presidents Reference Series is organized around an individual presidency and gathers a host of biographical, analytical, and primary source historical material that will analyze the presidency and bring the president, his dministration, and his times to life. The series focuses on key moments in U.S. political history as seen through the eyes of the most influential presidents to take the oath of office. Unique headnotes provide the context to data, tables and excerpted primary source documents. Lyndon Baines Johnson was born in 1908. He was first elected to Congress in 1937 and reelected twice. When he set his sights on the U.S. Senate in 1940 he was defeated. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Johnson was the first member of the House to volunteer for active military duty. In 1949 he became a U.S. Senator and was elected its majority leader in 1955. Johnson sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960, but lost to John F. Kennedy, who would offer him the vice president spot. In a close election, the Kennedy/Johnson ticket prevailed over Nixon/Lodge. In 1963 Vice President Johnson was part of the motorcade traveling through Dallas, Texas when Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated Kennedy. Johnson, while aboard Air Force One, was sworn in as 36th president of the United States. His administration crafted and oversaw several great moments in American history, including civil rights efforts, the Great Society, and technological advances. These events were, to some degree, overshadowed by the poor economy, civil unrest, and the U.S involvement in the Vietnam War. Troubled by his rapidly declining public approval, he did not seek re-election.

Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even only one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.
