O'Billovich, Amazon.com Hardcover - 1152 pages Vol 3 (April 23, 2002) Knopf; ISBN: 0394528360 Means of Ascent (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, Vol 2) by Robert A. Caro The second installment in a projected four-volume biography of LBJ that opened with The Path to Power , Means of Ascent shines a harsh light on the early political years of one of America's most paradoxical presidents. The man who would later ram civil rights legislation through a reluctant Congress, and then be brought down by Vietnam, came out of a political swampCaro gives a graphic picture of the Texas democratic political machine at its most corrupt. The climax of the book is LBJ's election to the Senate in 1948, an election he won by 87 dubious votes out of almost a million. That vote arguably changed history. This book won the 1990 National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography. Amazon.com

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
The Vice President sends 1963 New Year wishes to his longtime secretary.
TLS: "Lyndon" as JFK's Vice President The Vice President, Washington, 1963 January 1. To Mrs. Dorothy Nichols. In full: "Lady Bird and I are glad you like the bracelet - glad you love us - and glad you expressed your love for both so well. We love you more than you will ever know, and you have our warmest wishes for a peaceful, prosperous new year." Fine condition. Accompanied by photocopies of two articles, one picturing Dorothy Jackson with Johnson. Fine condition. LBJ was well prepared for his post as Vice President, having served as a U.S. Representative from Texas (1937-1948), U.S. Senator (1949-1960) and Majority Leader of the Senate (1955-1960). With him through much of his political career was DOROTHY JACKSON, the first secretary he hired when he went to Congress in 1937. Miss Jackson was from Cotulla, Texas, where Johnson had taught school while attending Southwest State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas. She remained a close friend of both the future President and his wife. In 1940, when she married lawyer Philip Nichols Jr., Johnson gave the bride away. Except for the years she took off to have three children, Nichols worked for LBJ until he left the White House, serving as a secretary and Assistant to the President from 1963-1969. Three items.

"Let us Reason Together"
Lyndon Johnson, Master Legislator
During the 1992 presidential election, many people talked of gridlock—the inability of Congress and the president to pass major legislation. Some argued that our system grinds to a halt whenever one party occupies the White House and another party holds a majority in Congress. Yet during the 1950s, a Republican president and a Democratic Congress worked together to pass important legislation. They were brought together by one man — Lyndon Baines Johnson. He is probably best remembered as the president who ordered the massive buildup of American military forces in Vietnam and for his subsequent failure to win the war. But there was another, more successful role that Johnson played during his many years of public service. Lyndon Baines Johnson was a master legislator. Politics Was His Destiny Born in Texas in 1908, Lyndon Johnson trained to be a teacher, but he made politics his life's work. He first went to Washington in 1931 as the secretary to a Democratic congressman. In 1935, he became the Texas director of the National Youth Administration (NYA), one of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal agencies. The NYA was designed to put Americans back to work during the Great Depression. After two years with the NYA, he ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and won.

52. Lyndon Baines Johnson - State Of The Union 1965
We are there, first, because a friendly nation has asked us for help againstthe Communist aggression. Ten years ago our president pledged our help.
http://lone-star.net/mall/jcitychamber/union65.htm
LBJ State Of The Union Address: 1965 On this Hill which was my home, I am stirred by old friendships. Though total agreement between the Executive and the Congress is impossible, total respect is important. I am proud to be among my colleagues of the Congress whose legacy to their trust is their loyalty to their Nation. I am not unaware of the inner emotions of the new Members of this body tonight. Twenty-eight years ago, I felt as you do now. You will soon learn that you are among men whose first love is their country, men who try each day to do as best they can what they believe is right. We are entering the third century of the pursuit of American union. Two hundred years ago, in 1765, nine assembled colonies first joined together to demand freedom from arbitrary power. For the first century we struggled to hold together the first continental union of democracy in the history of man. One hundred years ago, in 1865, following a terrible test of blood and fire, the compact of union was finally sealed. For a second century we labored to establish a unity of purpose and interest among the many groups which make up the American community.

Both his father and his paternal grandfather served in the Texas House of Representatives. In 1935, Johnson became Texas administrator for the National Youth Administration. Two years later, he was elected to Congress as an all-out supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and served until 1949. Lyndon B. Johnson
Lyndon Baines Johnson became the 36th president of the United States on the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November 1963. A skilled promoter of liberal domestic legislation, he was also a staunch believer in the use of military force to help achieve the country's foreign policy objectives. His escalation of American involvement in the Vietnam War eroded his popular standing and led to his decision not to run for reelection to the presidency in 1968. Early Life Johnson was born on Aug. 27, 1908, near Johnson City , Tex., the eldest son of Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr., and Rebekah Baines Johnson. His father, a struggling farmer and cattle speculator in the hill country of Texas, provided only an uncertain income for his family. Politically active, Sam Johnson served five terms in the Texas legislature. Lyndon's mother had varied cultural interests and placed high value on education; she was fiercely ambitious for her children. Johnson attended public schools in Johnson City and received a B.S. degree from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos. He then taught grade school for a year in Cotulla before going to Washington in 1931 as secretary to a Democratic Texas congressman, Richard M. Kleberg.

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park tells the story of our 36th President in a unique and encompassing way. The story begins with Lyndon Johnson's ancestors, tracing the influences his family and his beloved Texas Hill Country had on the boy and the man. In Johnson City, the visitor can see how LBJ influenced his home town by bringing the resources of the U.S. Government to bear on improving the lives of his friends and neighbors. The park also affords a special opportunity to visit a working cattle ranch, preserved in the late 1960s time period. On the LBJ Ranch it is possible to experience the serenity and beauty from which the former president drew his strength and comfort. It is here that his final resting place is located. This entire "circle of life" gives the visitor a unique perspective into one of America's most noteworthy citizens by providing the most complete picture of an American president. The park was authorized on December 2, 1969 and was redesignated from a historic site to a national historical park on December 28, 1980. Present holdings are approximately 1,570 acres, 674 of which are federal. The Johnson family generously continues to add to this property; their most recent donation of acreage was in April, 1995. Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site
is in Gillespie County , between Fredericksburg and Johnson City, and contains 717.9 acres. Lyndon B. Johnson State Historical Park honors a native Texan who achieved the nation's highest office. To create the unique facility, friends of then President Johnson raised money to purchase property directly across the Pedernales River from the LBJ Ranch. In 1965, this land was accepted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the park was opened in 1970. History: The park's location is historically significant since it is in the heart of the former President's home country. The area has been influenced by three major cultures: Native Americans, Spanish and German. Indians roamed the Hill Country first, leaving behind artifacts which tell of their nomadic life. The Spanish conquistadors followed, bringing a culture which was to endure to the present. German immigrants settled the Hill Country in the early 1800s and their descendants still call it home. Their culture has had a major impact on the development of the region and the park itself. All of these cultures are represented at the park. The 269-acre facility was officially dedicated in August 1970 in a ceremony attended by the Johnson family and a host of dignitaries. Since the dedication, the park has been expanded to approximately 732.75 acres.
