Lyndon Baines Johnson
Johnson was one of two Presidents born in Texas. At fifteen he ran away from home and traveled to California where he worked as a grape picker and auto mechanic. Sworn into office on an airplane in the Dallas airport, LBJ was the only president who was sworn in by a woman. Lyndon Johnson was in the military during WWII. He was Vice President under John F. Kennedy. He became President when Kennedy was assassinated. In 1964, he ran against Barry Goldwater. During the campaign the Democrats ran a TV ad showing a girl picking petals off of a daisy and counting. When she reached 10 her voice was replaced by a man counting down to zero. Then they showed a mushroom cloud of an atomic bomb. The ad only ran once, but was shown on the news and hurt Goldwater's chance to become President. He went without a Vice President until he was elected for his own term in 1964. Lyndon Baines Johnson used to go through the White House at night turning lights off that were not needed. He did not want to waste the taxpayers money. LBJ loved to give gifts. In his first year as President he spent over 3 times as much as his predecessor on gifts. He particularly liked giving electric toothbrushes. "I give these toothbrushes to friends," he explained, "for then I know that from now until the end of their days they will think of me the first thing in the morning and the last at night." His biographer Doris Kearns received more than 12 from Johnson in 10 years.

    U.S. Presidents and First Ladies
Tired of names like Madison, Taylor, and Tyler? Why not use McKinley or Pierce?
In recent years, surnames have become popular to use as first names. Classrooms are full of little Taylors, Tylers, and Madisons. Relative newcomers like Carter, Kennedy, Reagan, Grant and Harrison are zooming up the charts. What do these names have in common? They are all the names of former U.S. Presidents. Why these names? Perhaps parents feel they are distinguished and have more prestige than your average Smith and Jones. Perhaps it's a nod to our nation's history. Perhaps it's just because WASPy names are in vogue right now. Whatever the reason, here is a list of the Presidents of the U.S.A. and their First Ladies. The lists are organized chronologically as well as alphabetically. President Lyndon Baines Johnson
Served 1963-1965 (became President upon the death of Kennedy) Lyndon Baines Johnson was born August 27, 1908, in central Texas, not far from Johnson City, which his family had helped settle. He felt the pinch of rural poverty as he grew up, working his way through Southwest Texas State Teachers College; he learned compassion for the poverty of others when he taught students of Mexican descent. In 1934, he married Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor. In 1937, he campaigned successfully for the House of Representatives on a New Deal platform, effectively aided by his wife. During World War II, he served briefly in the Navy as a lieutenant commander, winning a Silver Star in the South Pacific. After six terms in the House, Johnson was elected to the Senate in 1948. In 1953, he became the youngest Minority Leader in Senate history, and the following year, when the Democrats won control, Majority Leader. With rare skill, he obtained passage of a number of key Eisenhower measures. In the 1960 campaign, as John F. Kennedy's running mate, Johnson was elected Vice President. On November 22, 1963, when Kennedy was assassinated, Johnson was sworn in as President.

Earlier in his career, Johnson served in the House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate, where he was elected majority leader. When he became President, his legislative experience combined with the force of his personality to make LBJ extremely successful in getting his programs enacted. As President, he signed more than 200 bills into law. Mr. Zesch made this humorous caricature for the President while LBJ recuperated from gallbladder surgery.

They came here—the exile and the stranger, brave but frightened—to find a place where a man could be his own man. They made a covenant with this land. Religious Affiliation of U.S. Presidents Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. The combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. On the other end of the scale, the most under-represented religious group is Catholicism, which has had only one U.S. president (John F. Kennedy), despite making up 26% of the current U.S. population. Major religious groups in the U.S. which have never had a U.S. president include: Lutherans (about 5% of the U.S. population); Jews (about 2% of the U.S. population); Latter-day Saints (2%); Pentecostals (about 1.8 %); Muslims (approx. 1 to 1.5%); Eastern Orthodox (approx. 1%); and Churches of Christ (1%). The election of 1964 was a landslide victory for the Democratic Party. Mrs. Johnson joined the President on the platform on the East Front of the Capitol; she was the first wife to stand with her husband as he took the oath of office. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Earl Warren. Leontyne Price sang at the ceremony.

Lyndon Baines Johnson: "We Shall Overcome" delivered 15 March 1965 Audio mp3 Part I Audio mp3 Part II [AUTHENTICITY CERTIFIED: Text version below transcribed directly from audio.] Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, Members of the Congress: I speak tonight for the dignity of man and the destiny of democracy. I urge every member of both parties, Americans of all religions and of all colors, from every section of this country, to join me in that cause. At times history and fate meet at a single time in a single place to shape a turning point in man's unending search for freedom. So it was at Lexington and Concord. So it was a century ago at Appomattox. So it was last week in Selma, Alabama. There, long-suffering men and women peacefully protested the denial of their rights as Americans. Many were brutally assaulted. One good man, a man of God, was killed. There is no cause for pride in what has happened in Selma. There is no cause for self-satisfaction in the long denial of equal rights of millions of Americans. But there is cause for hope and for faith in our democracy in what is happening here tonight. For the cries of pain and the hymns and protests of oppressed people have summoned into convocation all the majesty of this great government the government of the greatest nation on earth. Our mission is at once the oldest and the most basic of this country: to right wrong, to do justice, to serve man. In our time we have come to live with the moments of great crisis. Our lives have been marked with debate about great issues issues of war and peace, issues of prosperity and depression. But rarely in any time does an issue lay bare the secret heart of America itself. Rarely are we met with a challenge, not to our growth or abundance, or our welfare or our security, but rather to the values, and the purposes, and the meaning of our beloved nation.

    Term 1929 to 1933
    • Although orphaned as a child, he was a self-made millionaire. When Hoover took office the United States was prosperous and many people felt someone with Hoover’s background would be the right person to help the country become even more prosperous. On October 29, 1929 the stock market crashed, possibly because of President Calvin Coolidge ’s, tax cuts prompting the rich to invest. This day came to be known as "Black Tuesday" and was the beginning of the Great Depression. Stocks that were previously selling at thirty dollars a share were only worth pennies. Unemployment was rampant, with one hundred thousand jobs lost weekly for the next three years. By 1932 twelve million people were out of work. During the time of the Great Depression, Oklahoma went through a severe drought. Many people from Oklahoma headed to California hoping for an improvement, but they found only low wages and horrendous working conditions. John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes Of Wrath and many songs by Woodie Guthrie describe the disappointments of these people.
