Lyndon B. Johnson "A Great Society" for the American people and their fellow men elsewhere was the vision of Lyndon B. Johnson. In his first years of office he obtained passage of one of the most extensive legislative programs in the Nation's history. Maintaining collective security, he carried on the rapidly growing struggle to restrain Communist encroachment in Viet Nam. Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, in central Texas, not far from Johnson City, which his family had helped settle. He felt the pinch of rural poverty as he grew up, working his way through Southwest Texas State Teachers College; he learned compassion for the poverty of others when he taught students of Mexican descent. In 1937 he campaigned successfully for the House of Representatives on a New Deal platform, effectively aided by his wife, the former Claudia "Lady Bird" Taylor, whom he had married in 1934.

    Lyndon Johnson
36th President of the United States If two men agree on everything, you may be sure
that one of them is doing the thinking.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ)
was born on August 27, 1908 in a farmhouse near the Central Texas town of Stonewall. Like three other Vice Presidents in United States history, he became chief executive upon the assassination of the President. In Johnson's long career in Washington no skill served him better than his ability to "operate" the system. One congressional associate said about young Lyndon Johnson, "Within a few months, he knew how to operate in Washington better than some who had been there for twenty years before him." At age 44, he was the youngest man either party had ever chosen as Senate leader. Skilled in the art of political give and take, Johnson would pave the way for legislation before it came to the Senate floor for a vote. His strong support for space exploration helped establish the Senate Aeronautical and Space Committee, and made him its first chairman. He sponsored the law that created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958. In 1961 Johnson was elected Vice President on the ticket with President John F. Kennedy

Born on August 27, 1908, into a poor family in the Texas hill country, Lyndon Johnson was an average student but also seemed a natural leader among his peers. In 1927, he entered Southwest Texas State Teachers College. A prominent student, Johnson worked his way through school, graduating in three years. Next he taught English in Houston. In 1932, Johnson went to Washington as a legislative assistant to Representative Richard Kleberg. Doing most of the work, he became quite versed in the ways of Washington. In 1937, he ran for Congress himself as a Roosevelt New Dealer. In 1941, he ran for the Senate in a special election and lost. But he retained his House seat and continued his rise to prominence among congressional Democrats. During the war, Johnson served for a few months in a non-combat position. In 1948, Johnson ran again for the Senate, defeating his Democratic primary opponent in a runoff by only 87 votes amid loud accusations of fraud. He easily won the general election in the fall. In the Senate, Johnson quietly but quickly rose to prominence. In 1952, he became the Democratic leader in the Senate. He has been recognized as one of the ablest parliamentarians in U.S. history. In 1960, he sought his party's nomination for president but had to settle for the vice presidential slot, behind John Kennedy. As vice president, Johnson seemed out of place, with little of significance reaching his desk. That changed radically when Kennedy's assassination thrust him into the Oval Office in 1963.

Lyndon Baines Johnson, president of the United States, the eldest of five children of Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr., and Rebekah Baines Johnson, qqv Johnson's first important political position was as director of the National Youth Administration in Texas from 1935 to 1937. Construction of his system of roadside parks put young Texans to work and quietly introduced the participation of African Americans in some NYA programs. When the incumbent congressman of the Tenth Congressional District died in 1937, Johnson entered the race as a devoted supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. He spent eleven years in the House and became intimately familiar with the legislative process. He was a supporter of Roosevelt's programs and policies and a close ally of majority leader (later speaker of the House) Sam Rayburn . He was the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 1940 and helped the Democrats retain control of the House. In 1941 he ran for the Senate from Texas but was narrowly defeated in a special election. When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, Johnson joined the navy as a lieutenant commander. He saw combat during an inspection tour of the South Pacific in 1942. He left the navy in response to President Roosevelt's directive that congressmen should remain in Washington. Johnson made another race for the Senate in 1948 against popular former governor

Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973), like three other vice presidents in United States history, became chief executive upon the assassination of the president. He became President on Nov. 22, 1963, following the fatal shooting of President John F. Kennedy in a street in Dallas, Tex. A stunned nation rallied behind the energetic and ambitious new president, a product of the Texas hill country.
In 1964, Johnson, a Democrat, was elected to a full term as President. He and Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota defeated the Republican ticket of Senator Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona and Representative William E. Miller of New York. They received more than 61 per cent of the votes castthe largest percentage in U.S. history. Johnson chose not to run for reelection in 1968.
    Johnson's political life
Lyndon Baines Johnson had served in Congress for almost 24 years before he was elected vice president in 1960. In 1937, at the age of 29, he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1948. Five years later, at the age of 44, he was made Senate Democratic leaderthe youngest person ever elected to lead either party in the Senate.

The great phrases of that purpose still sound in every American heart, North and South: 'All men are created equal''government by consent of the governed''give me liberty or give me death.' Well, those are not just clever words, or those are not just empty theories. In their name Americans have fought and died for two centuries, and tonight around the world they stand there as guardians of our liberty, risking their lives. "Those words are a promise to every citizen that he shall share in the dignity of man. This dignity cannot be found in a man's possessions; it cannot be found in his power, or in his position. President Lyndon Baines Johnson's Boyhood Home
"I know -from personal experience- that abiding values and abundant visions are learned in the homes of our people." -Lyndon Baines Johnson L yndon Johnson's family moved from a farm near Stonewall, Texas, to Johnson City (a distance of about fourteen miles) two weeks after his fifth birthday, in September 1913. For most of the next twenty-four years, this was their home. In 1913, the family included Lyndon's father, Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr.; his mother, Rebekah Baines Johnson; young Lyndon; and his sisters, Rebekah and Josefa. Over the years, two more children were born in this house - Lucia and Sam Houston Johnson. The family life that Lyndon Johnson experienced here as he grew to adulthood strongly influenced the man who became our thirty-sixth President.
The interests of young Lyndon's parents had a profound effect on his subsequent political career and on the issues he championed both as a Congressman and as President. His father was a state legislator for twelve years. As such, Sam Ealy Jr. was a popular and effective participant in democratic party politics. At the age of ten, young Lyndon was on the campaign trail working for his father's re-election. At thirteen, he sat by his father's side during legislative sessions. These experiences taught Lyndon Johnson the "political facts of life" and the necessary skills of a successful politician.

The Making of a Memorial "This strip of land will always be a special place for me...It appears at the moment when you come over a rise and look down into the Potomac Valley and see the capital spread out with its great monuments - the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the towering Washington Monument, and sweeping on to the gleaming dome of the Capitol. The years never diminished the feeling of pride and elation we felt in those beautiful buildings that belong to all of us. " Lady Bird Johnson, shared these sentiments on April 6,1976 at the dedication of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove. The idea for a Memorial had its beginnings in 1973, following the death of Lyndon B. Johnson. His friends and colleagues wanted a fitting memorial to the mana tribute that would recall his love of the land, and recognize his achievements in preserving the Nation's environment. Built with private funds, this project gained support from people all across the country. In Oregon, school children raised cash with a bake sale, and in New Jersey a third grade class gave money earned through yard work. The Memorial is located in Lady Bird Johnson Park, a Potomac River island in Washington, D.C. In 1968, the island was renamed in Mrs. Johnson's honor for her role in beautifying the Nation's Capital. Later, 17 acres from this park were set aside for the LBJ Memorial Grove. The Grove committee, with Mrs. Johnson as Honorary Chair and more than 70 other men and women, planned this memorial as a different sort of tribute. It would be a living place where people could enjoy the pleasures and beauties of nature, not a great stone building or a bronze or marble statue.
