American President Andrew Johnson, 1808-1875
America's 17th president Andrew Johnson rose from humble beginnings as an indentured apprentice to be elected vice president of the United States. Sworn in as the nation's Chief Executive after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Johnson's struggles with Radical Republicans in Congress led to his impeachment in 1886, the first pressed against a US president. Though he was acquitted, Johnson left office feeling he had been disgraced and died July 31st, 1875 at the age of 66. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina December 29th, 1808 Andrew Johnson was the youngest of two sons born to Jacob Johnson and his wife, Mary McDonough. Jacob Johnson had made a very modest living as a hotel porter and constable, and his death in 1811 left his family destitute. Mary Johnson struggled to support her children as a laundress, then by working as a weaver, but when her fortunes did not improve and her marriage prospects seemed dim, she viewed her sons as obstacles and indentured them. Andrew was indentured as an apprentice to a tailor, essentially serving as slave labor on a contract while he learned the garment trade. At the age of 17 Johnson broke his contract and fled to Greenville, Tennessee, where he was later reunited with his family. In Greenville Johnson opened his own tailor shop, and found himself doing a good business in his new home town. Johnson had no education beyond lettering people's names and measuring, the bares essentials required by his trade, but was eager to learn and hired a reader to read histories to him as he worked. Johnson developed keen memorization skills, and was credited with the ability to recite the US Constitution. After a year in Greenville, Johnson wed Eliza McCardle, the daughter of a local shoemaker on May 17th, 1827, the groom a solid business owner of 18, the bride 16 years old. Eliza had received an unusually thorough education for a tradesman's daughter, and tutored her husband, Johnson proving an apt pupil who was soon reading and writing fluently and even eloquently as well as being adroit with mathematics. The Johnsons had five children.

The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
Only one president in U.S. history has been impeached by the House of Representatives: Andrew Johnson in 1868. At his trial in the Senate, Johnson escaped conviction by a single vote. In the election of 1864, Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, chose Senator Andrew Johnson, a Tennessee Democrat, as his vice-presidential running mate. Lincoln believed that Johnson, the only senator from a rebel state to remain loyal to the Union, would help persuade Democrats to vote Republican. After Lincoln was assassinated, Andrew Johnson took the oath of office on April 15, 1865. Two profound questions faced the nation. First, under what conditions should the Southern rebel states be readmitted into the Union? Second, what rights should the freedmen, or ex-slaves, have? A little over a month after becoming president, Johnson began executing his plan for reconstructing the South. Johnson pardoned all rebels except Confederate leaders. He also restored all rebel property except for slaves. Finally, he authorized each rebel state to call a convention of white delegates to draw up a new constitution. Once completed, a new state government could then be formed, and the state could apply for readmission to the Union.

Born in a log cabin in North Carolina to nearly illiterate parents, Andrew Johnson did not master the basics of reading, grammar, or math until he met his wife at the age of seventeen. The only other man to attain the office of President with so little formal education was Abraham Lincoln. Whereas Lincoln is esteemed as America's greatest President, Johnson, his successor, is ranked as one of the worst. After Andrew's father died, his mother and her new husband apprenticed fourteen-year-old Andrew and his older brother William to a local tailor. After serving a number of years in this trade, the boys ran away for several years, dodging rewards for their capture placed by their former employer. Andrew later returned to his mother, and the entire family moved west to Greeneville, Tennessee, where young Andrew set up shop as a tailor and met his wife, Eliza McCardle. Eliza educated Andrew and helped him make wise investments in town real estate and farmlands. When Johnson reached the White House, First Lady Eliza Johnson was a semi-invalid suffering from tuberculosis during her husband's term in office. She only made two public appearances during her entire stay in the executive mansion. Nevertheless, she operated behind the scenes with energy and tact and was fondly remembered by the White House staff.

Impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson
Previous Chapter Next Chapter Quote Fourth Circuit Court of Virginia was the jurisdiction Andrew Johnson wanted for the treason trial of Confederate President Jefferson Davis Military officials wanted to try him in their courts. The authorities debated over the jurisdiction for two years while Davis was imprisoned. Johnson knew a military trial would make Davis a martyr. Chase refused to hear cases in the Virginia Circuit while the State was still under the military government and not until the writ of habeas corpus was restored. When Chase finally sat at the Davis trial in November 1868 he approved Davis' lawyer's argument that the 14th Amendment that had recently gone into effect applied to Davis. In December Johnson issued a general amnesty. At the next session of circuit court, Chase discharged Davis on the grounds he was included in the pardon and could not be tried ex post facto.
Impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson
At the only impeachment trial of a president in history, the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson for High Crimes and misdemeanors, (1868), Chase refused to let the Senate turn the hearings into a mockery of the law when he faced an angry mob of radical senators who wanted to limit the Chief Justice's power in the trial. Chase insisted and by cleverly out maneuvering the senators, he insured that the trial would be conducted with impartially and with the proper character of judicial process assuring the President a fair trial. The Senate knew if Chase didn't have his way, the Chief Justice could refuse to preside over the trial thereby violating the Constitution.
