Notes from the "Interview Skills for Job Hunting in Academics" Brown Bag Meeting
Blue Wooldridge, Ralph Hambrick
March 3, 1998 Ed Note: This was a largely free form discussion - points from the discussion are presented below, in no particular order. The Field of Public Administration
  • This discussion should, in the future, have both old and new students. New students should be aware of the academic job search process, so that they know what they can be doing to prepare themselves.
  • It is widely believed that there are large numbers of faculty openings coming available in the next few years. Exactly what kinds of extpertise will be needed is not known. (Dr. Blue Wooldridge noted that anyone interested in undertaking a study of NASPAA schools should contact him.)
  • Blue conducted an unscientific study the morning of the meeting and found that the primary job areas appear to be in human resources, budgeting and finance, quantitiative research, and non-profit management. Students are encouraged to be paying attention to this kind of information themselves.
  • A discussion of politics and how to know what that are like at a potential institution. Ralph offered that you should, "Inquire about the politics without actually asking." "Politics are vicious because the stakes are so low," said Blue. Most importantly, Be aware of politics at your own institution.

Employers on campus
A number of graduate employers and professional organisations visit the campus during the Autumn and Spring terms. They visit for several purposes:
Presentations
These give you a chance to find out about an organisation or profession before applying and can represent a valuable opportunity to talk to recent recruits about what the job is really like.
Interviews
Employers who visit to interview, however, are inviting you to apply to them via the Careers Service by a given closing date. They will then decide whom they wish to interview on the dates they have arranged to visit. Applying in this way may mean that you can have your first interview at a more convenient location.
Fairs and other events
Employers attending fairs or running workshops are keen to talk to students about the opportunities they have or to offer advice on their particular area of work or a specific aspect of job hunting, for example writing an effective CV. Attending these events can be very valuable to you in your career planning.

Your career as a professional chemist begins with your first job. You should begin your job hunt about a year before graduation by assembling a list of companies you would like to work for and people at each company to contact. The summer before your final year is a good time to start. Plan to visit a local library to obtain information on potential employers. Also read at least one good book on job hunting techniques. The American Chemical Society publishes several brochures tailored for chemists and engineers to help you write your resume and cover letter and interview more effectively. These are listed in the final section of this brochure.
To obtain advice in your job hunt, consult with people at your campus placement center. Most placement centers arrange on-campus interviews with corporate recruiters visiting your school. They can also provide guidance in writing your r‚sum‚ and cover letter. In addition, they can provide counseling and moral support. Also discuss your job hunting and career concerns with professors, particularly faculty advisors. Finding a job is seldom easy. Disappointment is common in job hunting. Competition is stiff and so you should not become discouraged if you do not succeed in getting a particular position. You must expect to apply for many positions to win a few interviews. Not every interview will result in getting a job offer.

Job-hunting successes and failures

Mark Heaney
You always learn from painful experiences, but they don't have to be your own. Six engineers 'fess up to their worst and best job-hunt moments so you can learn from them
Some names have been changed. Kara Jones, 31, chemical process engineer, Danone Waters Worst: My university course focused on the petrochemical industry so I looked for a year-out placement in pharmaceuticals and found one with Rhone-Poulenc Rorer. Since then though, I feel that I have been stuck in the same field. My advice to students looking to do a placement is to seriously consider beforehand the areas that you want to go into - going down one avenue can definitely restrict your career options.

Job Hunting Mistakes, Goofs and Blunders By Cindy Elflein Good comedy often includes zany pratfalls and cut-ups. Chances are, you've laughed along with your favorite celebrities when they've forgotten lines or missed cues. It's not nearly as funny, however, when it happens to you during your job search. "I had already had several job interviews, but this was the BIG one - I really wanted the job," says Sam, a business administration major. I walked into the room, greeted the interviewers, proceeded to sit down - and found myself on the floor! The chair had broken! Talk about embarrassing moments. I didn't know what to do." So many counselors advise professionals-to-be about what to do, while neglecting to tell them what not to do. Here, then, are 14 common job hunting "wrongs" and "don'ts" along with their counter "rights" and "do's."
Having Unrealistic Self-Analysis "New graduates tend to underestimate their talents, skills, and qualifications, and this negative outlook permeates the entire job hunting process" says Thomas C. Devlin, Director, Cornell University's Career Center, Ithaca, NY. "These students take fewer risks, make fewer inquiries and utilize fewer resources. They don't aggressively pursue opportunities - they limit opportunities." This brings us to common mistake number two...

You're a microbiologist or a biochemical engineer. You may be about to graduate with your bachelor's degree. You may have had a job but lost it. You may have an advanced degree. You may have a job but for some reason you're not doing what you want to do or going where you want to go. The SIM Education Committee hopes that you will find this pamphlet helpful in deciding if you want a job and useful in pursuing the next stage of your career. For the most part we are targeting the new BS graduate who is making his or her first career decision. For those with professional experience, the process of job hunting is not new but we hope you will also be able to benefit. What does the information contained in this pamphlet have to offer over and above the usual resources of your college placement office? This pamphlet is only one of several resources available to someone seeking a job. If you rely on any one resource for such an important decision, it may mean you need more experience before you make a commitment of this magnitude. There are references listed throughout this pamphlet to other sources of data on job hunting. Follow up on at least some of them.

Or .... The Job Hunting Safari
By Eva Rosenberg, MBA, EA Next to death, divorce ... and OK, taxes, having to look for a job is the most stressful thing you ever face. Especially now, when the economy seems so uncertain. Companies you could count on to have openings, no longer do. So the job search is taking longer and the final results may not offer the kind of compensation you expected at the outset. To make it all worse, since you don't know when you will be back at work, this is kind of a limbo time. People rarely use it productively, to take some leisure time to re-energize after a tough few years on the last job, or to start a cherished, but long-deferred project. Looking back, if you had known you had that much time coming, you'd have done it all so differently. Let's talk about just two of those things you must do differently right now. Record-keeping and taxes.
