Advertised Jobs and Vacancies
Vacancies are advertised in a wide range of publications from national daily papers such as The Times, The Financial Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian and The Independent, to local and regional daily/weekly papers. There are also regional and national papers devoted solely to jobs. Consult your local newsagent to find out which papers are available in your area. If you are planning to move to a new area you may want to get the local/regional papers from that area as well. Jobs are also advertised in journals/trade magazines for your profession/industry and you should subscribe to these publications if possible. Subscription is often free if you are already in the profession/industry. As well as carrying job vacancies, there will also be news on which companies are expanding and those which have won new contracts - you may want to approach these companies (see the section on speculative applications and networking below). Other places where you will find job vacancies advertised include your local job centre, teletext and radio 'job spots'. Job Centres may well not have any advertisements for the sort of job you are looking for, but it costs nothing to look!

You MUST find the hidden job market in order to attain career success. We have provided job search tips designed to show you the basics of accessing hidden job markets through networking, professional associations, volunteering, and company/industry research. Networking consists of connecting with a wide variety of individuals who may be able to help with your job hunt and career planning. Network with people at a higher level so you can discover what type of jobs might interest you. Discover which skills and experiences are relevant to those jobs. Practice your interpersonal skills to increase your visibility in the field and uncover hidden markets. Ask questions and seek answers. Avoid staying hidden in your house. Get out often to meet new people. Rarely will a job come to you- you need to listen and seize opportunities wherever they exist. Join an association in whatever field interests you and become an active member. Meet as many members as possible to learn about the industry and uncover possible opportunities. Surf the Internet and find the association's website to learn about conferences and other events you can participate in. Talk to someone in the field you are interested in and interview them (if possible) for information about the position and industry.

Write your cover letter using the checklist below to ensure giving a good first impression to your prospective employer.
    Sample letter

(for fresh graduates) Checklist for a perfect cover letter Address the right person
Name the correct title as it's advertised

    Precise and concise

    Tailored for the specific job
    ...
The right letter is in the right envelope with the right address

    Address the right person
Read the job ad carefully and pay special attention to the person your application is addressed to. Don't take it for granted and address "Dear Sir" when it's obviously a female recipient. It looks even worse when you address "Dear Human Resources Manager" but the ad says to the "General Manager". It's only the start of the letter and you don't want the reader to stop there and discard your application.
Name the correct title as it's advertised Make sure you are naming the job correctly. You may be applying for a few positions at the same time but don't mix up. Have the Position in bold to catch the reader's attention so that he or she won't get mixed up either. Making the recruiters' job easier is not your duty but you should do everything possible to get your application to stand out from all the rest. Do include the job reference number if you are requested to do so.

    Take Your Time
    With Cover Letters
    By J OANN S L UBLIN
Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal From The Wall Street Journal Online Eager to snare a hot job opening, you quickly scribble a cover letter and attach it to your flawless résumé. Too bad. You probably just blew your chance to be hired. Your hastily written missive missed the mark and you misspelled the target company's name. A great cover letter is the golden key to any job search. Yet despite a glut of advice books and Web sites, an estimated 85% of cover letters are so flawed that senders never land an interview, career coaches say. Even experts err. An "ideal" letter sent to me by one career counselor contained this sentence fragment in the first paragraph: "With a great deal of interest." Looking elsewhere for how to craft a compelling cover letter, I turned to Lisa Jacobson, a frustrated small-business owner, and Deborah J. Storz, a marketing specialist whom she hired last spring. Their sage advice may be worth heeding as the employment rebound gathers speed.

    Cover Letter Writing Guide
Preparing an effective cover letter is one of the critical first steps
in getting your job search on track.
PURPOSE OF COVER LETTER A cover letter is used to:
    • Introduce yourself and ask for consideration of your qualifications for a position with that organization. Summarize your qualifications for a particular position or for any position in that organization. Direct the employer's attention to something specific on your enclosed resume concerning your background and their needs. Communicate your interest in and enthusiasm for the position and that employer. Ask the employer for an interview.
    COVER LETTER TIPS
    • Your resume should be accompanied by a cover letter when mailed to prospective employers. Type the cover letter on the same color and quality of paper that you used for your resume. You should single space the letter and double space between the paragraphs. Your cover letter should be prepared individually for each employer. Ideally, you should research each employer and be able to note something unique about that organization or position.

From: Resume Catalog: 200 Damn Good Examples , 1996 edition
Your resume should always have a good COVER LETTER attached, as a personal communication between you and the individual who receives the resume.
Many job hunters are intimidated by the task of writing a cover letter, but it's not that hard if you think of it as just a friendly, simple communication from one person (who's looking for a good job) to another (who's looking for a good employee). It is in the interests of both parties to make a good connection!
How To Write a Good Cover Letter
Be sure to address your cover letter by name and title to the person who could actually hire you. When it's impossible to learn their name, use their functional title, such as "Dear Manager." You may have to guess ("Dear Selection Committee") but never say "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir or Madam"!
Show that you know a little about the company , and that you are aware of their current problems, interests, or priorities.
Express your enthusiasm and interest in this line of work and this company. If you have a good idea that might help the employer resolve a problem currently facing their industry, offer to come in and discuss it.
