Job-Hunting Advice For B-School Grads
By S TEVE L UBRANO When the M.B.A. Class of 2003 matriculated, they had no idea that their job search would be this hard. Sure, the dot-com vision was evaporating, but everybody figured the markets would be turning around by now. Most of the news these days is a tough pill to swallow at least at first taste but maybe the long-term results will justify the pain. Historically, what a graduate ought to do was more important than what she wanted to do. Now these priorities have switched, and students are entertaining careers that were never under consideration a few years ago.

Air travel is necessary for the majority of the most interesting, and unique wilderness experiences Alaska has to offer. Alaska bush planes on wheels, floats or skis, can fly you to some of the wildest, most remote and beautiful places on the planet. Scheduled Alaska air carriers can deliver you inexpensively, to the right place from which to launch an incredible adventure. Alaska wilderness adventures allow for a huge range of interests, budgets, and comfort levels. In Alaska, far from any towns, villages, or other signs of civilization, you can fly to luxury lodges that serve incomparable gourmet cuisine and provide elegant accommodations, in gorgeous wilderness settings, with unbelievable fishing. On the other hand, bush planes can leave you on your own, at the headwaters of a wild river, with an inflatable raft, gear and provisions, for a two week float trip through spectacular untouched terrain.

document.domain="monster.com"; var ad24=false; It's hard enough to job hunt in a strong economy. But now, with the media full of dreary news about corporate layoffs, even the heartiest job seeker may be inclined to roll over and catch a few more z's rather than hit the streets. Don't quit looking before you start. During troubled times, job hunting requires you to pull out all the stops and take the basics to a new level. You truly have to work it. Ironically, the challenge of a tighter job market may work for many job seekers by forcing them to think of new approaches. It all boils down to attitude, stresses executive recruiter Diane Barowsky, president of Barowsky Search Partners Ltd. in Olympia Fields, Illinois. "We underestimate the importance of that positive attitude, but that's what gets you through the day," she says. Gain confidence by asking yourself, "What do I have to lose?" "It's easier to take a risk and call that intimidating contact when you feel [this way]," says Barowsky. "On the flip side, when things are going well, you don't need to do anything to keep your job going."

Carrie Williams graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a communication studies degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and had internship experience. She figured she would have no problem landing an entry-level job. But Williams graduated in 1991 during the depths of the last major US recession. She and thousands of other grads struggled to find entry-level jobs in their fields. If you're a recent or soon-to-be grad looking for a job in this market, Williams's story probably sounds familiar. Who better to ask for job-hunting advice than people like Williams who graduated between 1989 and 1992? Their insights may help you with your own quest to find a job. Find a Way to Stand Out Diane Eichler, 34, a 1990 international relations graduate of Scripps College in Claremont, California, knew she needed to go the extra mile when she was looking for her first job in advertising.
