The following suggestions have been gathered from a number of recruiters and career specialists, including Susan Lee, Rita Sue Siegel, The U. of Wisconsin Art Department, the California EDD, and excerpted from my Careers and Salaries Digital Design and Multimedia
The EDD defines Desktop Publishing, Prepress, Graphic Design, Web Design, Animation and Computer-aided Illustration as Multimedia jobs. (I generally prefer the term 'Digital Design' ).
Digital design / Multimedia has been around for a number of years, but it is only within the past few years that it has been recognized as a rapidly emerging new industry. This emerging industry is creating many new career and job opportunities for people with knowledge and skills in these areas. An important and interesting difference between careers in multimedia and many other career areas is the large proportion of freelance workers in the industry. Many people with careers in multimedia are not steadily employed by a single company or employer, but rather move from project to project working on a contractual basis. Each new project may bring together a different collaboration of professionals into what might be considered a "virtual company" with a life limited to the duration of the project. These professionals create a virtual workforce who are often paid by the hour and expect their current employment to terminate with the end of the project. Therefore, these freelance workers must have a number of entrepreneurial skills in addition to their technical skills. They must also be able to work effectively as a member of a team whose membership changes with each project.

The simplified format below is equally applicable whether your 16 or 65. (OK if you're 65 you ought to be thinking about escaping work not chasing it, but you know what I mean) The detail may be different, you may have to seek our specialist sources, agencies or journals for example, but the idea is the same. Successful job interviews are like a good theatrical performance. If you convincingly act confident, enthusiastic, and prepared for those tricky questions, there's a good chance you'll be called back for an encore! The job candidate that gets chosen isn't necessarily the one who's the most experienced or capable; it's often the job-seeker who has cultivated the ability to relax at job interviews — to "just be themselves" — to answer questions in a deliberate way, and to come across in interviews as if they really believe in themselves. With persistence and determination, almost anyone can acquire the skill to answer interview questions with confidence and composure. Have Jobs Emailed to You!

To: Multiple recipients of list LIBREF-L
Subject: Re: Job Complaint- Entry Level Reference Job Original message- -The Jobs are out there as long as you are willing to relocate. My first professional position took me from Indiana to Oklahoma! -Begin your search early. Don't wait until after you have graduated. I started my search in December of 1991. I graduated in May 1992. My mentor was telling me to start in November. I was not offered a position until August. -After graduation if you need to work in order to pay bills and have not found a professional position, be careful about what employment you take. Try to find employment that will give you skills to apply towards a professional position. You may be asked during an interview what you are currently doing. It will look better for you if you have been working part-time at the public library instead of McDonalds. After graduation, I worked as a substitute teacher in the public school system until summer vacation. This gave me some teaching experience. I also learned how to manage a classroom!! I also was able to find a part-time position at a local University Library as an Adjunct Librarian. I only worked 4-8 hours a week but it gave me my first professional title and more experience with reference and hands-on instruction. -Don't limit yourself to only applying for entry-level positions. A lot of times, the job announcement is listing desired qualifications. In a pool of applicants maybe only one person will have all desired qualifications. Hiring requirements for most libraries require at least three applicants be interviewd. If you have only one or two of the desired qualifications, you still have a chance of being selected for an interview.

Your career as a professional chemist begins with your first job. You should begin your job hunt about a year before graduation by assembling a list of companies you would like to work for and people at each company to contact. The summer before your final year is a good time to start. Plan to visit a local library to obtain information on potential employers. Also read at least one good book on job hunting techniques. The American Chemical Society publishes several brochures tailored for chemists and engineers to help you write your resume and cover letter and interview more effectively. These are listed in the final section of this brochure.
To obtain advice in your job hunt, consult with people at your campus placement center. Most placement centers arrange on-campus interviews with corporate recruiters visiting your school. They can also provide guidance in writing your r‚sum‚ and cover letter. In addition, they can provide counseling and moral support. Also discuss your job hunting and career concerns with professors, particularly faculty advisors. Finding a job is seldom easy. Disappointment is common in job hunting. Competition is stiff and so you should not become discouraged if you do not succeed in getting a particular position. You must expect to apply for many positions to win a few interviews. Not every interview will result in getting a job offer.
