Immigration and Naturalization Service's History, Genealogy and Education page contains information about the INS Historical Reference Library collection and services, documents concerning the history of the Service as well as of immigration law, procedure, and immigration stations, and instructions for historical and genealogical research using INS records. Millions of Americans trace their family history to an immigrant. According to an Ancestry.com article ( Rediscovering Passenger Lists ), "Since 1820, over 60 million persons have arrived at more than 100 different ports in the United States. . . ." Finding a record to reveal where that immigrant came from, or when and where they first stepped foot on American soil, is often a long and frustrating task. Resource materials of the US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) may help in some of this search, as they are the records of 20th century immigration to the United States. Even if an ancestor is located on some of the earlier passenger lists, requirements did not include recording home town, just the nationality.

    Upcoming meetings
March 14 Estelle Guzik, past president of Jewish Genealogical Society of New York, will be speaking on Naturalization Records. The lecture will include HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) , IRO (Industrial Removal Office). Estelle M. Guzik, compiler and editor of the recently published Genealogical Resources in New York, served as President of the Jewish Genealogical Society, Inc., from 1996 to 2001 and Vice-President from 1985-1990.
Estelle has been a member of the JGS almost from its inception in 1977. She served as editor of the JGS' Resources for Jewish Genealogy in
Signed copies of her book will be available for purchase at the meeting. April 18 Arnie Lang will talk about Searching Ellis Island Online Records. 20 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924. A large number of these were Jewish families, coming from Eastern Europe and other areas of Europe. The arrival records of these immigrants at Ellis Island are available on the internet, but locating them can be very difficult. Mr Lang will provide general background on the immigration process. However, his talk will emphasize searching those Ellis-Island online arrival records to locate your Ancestor's immigration records. He will illustrate what these records can show you about your immigrant family and how to locate the records using available unique search techniques. Arnold Lang has 20 years of genealogical research experience and is currently the president of the Genealogical Society of Bergen County, N.J. He made his first presentation on "Using Ship Passenger Lists and Naturalization Records" to that Society 8 years ago. At that time he also established his award-winning website on the Internet entitled: "Research Guide to Immigration and Ship Passenger Lists". Since then, he has been making presentations at genealogical societies and at various libraries throughout New Jersey and New York. He also teaches classes on this and other subjects, including "Searching Ellis Island Online Records", "Using Family Tree Maker", "Census Records", etc.

" In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of each county's web page. These pages are a result of that effort." This site includes links to cemeteries, military records, vital statistics and other useful information.
