JewishGen FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Revision 12.1.1 - May 14, 2004
by Warren Blatt
This document, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), attempts to answer some of the basic questions about Jewish Genealogy.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
  • Getting Started Publications JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) Books ... Glossary, Abbreviations
  • 1. GETTING STARTED
If you're just getting started researching your Jewish family history, you should definitely begin by reading either of the following books:
    • Kurzweil, Arthur. From Generation to Generation: How to Trace Your Jewish Genealogy and Personal History . Revised Edition. (New York: Harper Collins, 1994). 388 pages. ($27.50 hardcover, $18.00 paperback). ISBN 0-06-270097-9. [First edition was: (New York: William Morrow, 1980). 353 pages. ISBN 0-8052-0706-6. A second revised edition is expected in the Spring of 2004: (Jossey-Bass). 400 pages. ($24.95). ISBN: 0-7879-7051-4]. Rottenberg, Dan. Finding Our Fathers: A Guidebook to Jewish Genealogy . (New York: Random House, 1977). 401 pages. ($20). [Reprints: Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1986, 1995, 1998. ISBN 0-8063-1151-7].
These two were the pioneering works that helped inspire the modern Jewish genealogical movement, in the late 1970s. Both books are a great inspiration for beginners. However, some of their sources are out-of-date; they describes the state of Jewish genealogical research as of 1977 and 1994, respectively. Jewish genealogy has advanced a great deal in the last generation, with the advent of the Internet, regional Special Interest Groups, etc. These more recent sources are described throughout this document.

    Ted Gostin
    Professional Genealogist
    Jewish Genealogical Research
I conduct research on Jewish families using both United States public records and European records that are available here in the United States. While I am not making research trips to Europe for clients at this time, I do maintain contact with a number of European researchers who can help find additional records from various European countries. Some of the more common searches that I conduct for clients are described below.
    United States Record Searches
If you want to trace your Jewish roots and find out where your family came from in the "Old Country," don't assume you have to delve into European records to find any information. A thorough genealogical search begins with what you know and proceeds to discovering what you don't know. For most of us, that means finding out some more information about our grandparents and great-grandparents here in the United States before going any further. The four basic searches described below vital records, census records, naturalization records and passenger arrival records will usually provide a wealth of information about immigrants to the United States, including accurate birthdates and birthplaces, dates and places of immigration and emigration, names of other family members in the United States, original place of origin and names of relatives left behind in the "Old Country." These four searches should be the starting point if you are an American Jew searching for your Jewish roots.
