Statement of Purpose:
Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey.
Jewsih archaeology, numismatics, fine arts, ethnography, various exhibits on Jewish culture. Dedicated to presenting the remarkable scope and diversity of Jewish culture, the Museum serves today as a unique source of insight and inspiration for all people. Visitors to the Museum enjoy an art experience which captures 4,000 years of Jewish life and culture. In 1904, Judge Mayer Sulzberger presented his library and 26 ceremonial objects to The Jewish Theological Seminary of America to serve as the initial establishment of a Jewish museum. From this modest beginning, and through the generosity of many patrons and collectors, the collections grew. By 1944, when Mrs. Felix M. Warburg, a member of the Seminary's Board of Directors, offered her home for use as a Jewish museum, the collections were more than worthy of the proposed new setting. On May 8, 1947, the Museum opened in the French Gothic-style Warburg Mansion, on Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street. A gift from Mr. and Mrs. Albert A. List provided funds for much needed additional space, and the new List building, adjoining the Warburg home, opened in 1963. In 1993, the Museum expanded and totally renovated its buildings to increase space for gallery, office and education use.

Statement of Purpose:
Museum to Create 50,000-square-foot Multi-Faceted Arts Center for Jewish Cultural Programming and Perspective Expanded Institution to Include Facilities for Major Exhibitions, Adult and Youth Education, and Community-Wide Programs San Francisco, June 12, 1996 The Jewish Museum San Francisco today announced that it has launched a major initiative for expanding the scale, range, and reach of its programming with the selection of Peter Eisenman as the architect for its new facility in the Yerba Buena district of downtown San Francisco. The Jewish Museum, founded twelve years ago to provide a forum for exploring the Jewish contribution to American society and the ongoing evolution of contemporary American Jewish culture, had long outgrown its current space in the downtown Jewish Community Federation building. Creation of the institution's first museum building was stimulated in response to both the growing interest of the Jewish community to explore its own culture and identity in contemporary society, and the need to broaden and enliven the dialogue among all the diverse heritages that form the greater Bay Area community. The new museum is slated for completion in 1999. Fred Levinson, President of the Jewish Museum comments, "Since its founding in 1984, the Jewish Museum's core mission has been to foster an understanding of Jewish traditions and perspectives within the context of contemporaly culture. The diverse programming of the museum is a reflection of core Jewish values of inquiry, dialogue and respect for diversity. The Jewish Museum has played an important ongoing role in the community, and with the expansion program, we are reinventing ourselves as a full-service institution by establishing a level of programming that is commensurate with the public's needs and expectations."

As a result of his drinking, poverty, and the suicide of his twenty-one-year-old pregnant lover, Jeanne Hébuterne, the day after his death, the popular story of his life has been mythologized to such an extent as to eclipse the meaning of his work.
Curator Mason Klein takes a fresh look at the artist and his work, examining the role his Italian Jewish heritage played in shaping him and his work. Visit Modigliani: Beyond the Myth . Includes more than 100 portraits and nudes, in drawings, paintings, and sculpture.

Adults £3.25, children and concessions £2.50, family £8.00 Mon-Thurs: 10.30am - 4pm; Sun: 10.30 - 5.00 pm; Jewish holidays closed. Located almost a mile outside the cental core of the city this museum tells the story of Manchester Jewry and the people associated with it whilst also putting on special events and exhibitions. The building was built as the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in the Moorish style in 1874 by the Manchester Jewish architect Edward Salomans. The tours around the building for non-Jewish visitors are interesting for the insight they give into the religion. Notable members of the local Jewish community have included Chaim Weizmann, first president of Israel who was resident in Manchester for many years and the writers Jack Rosenthal, Howard Jacobson and Maise Mosco. Just down the road the first Marks and Spencers store opened in the 1890s. A broader picture of the develoment of the community can be gained by joining the regular heritage walks. Jewish Museum in Berlin: Exterior
Click on a thumbnail image to view the full photograph. View of the Jewish Museum Berlin from Linderstrassse. The building was designed by Daniel Libeskind and completed in 1999. The concrete columns are a part of the E.T.A. Hoffmann Garden of Exile and Emigration. Close-up of the zinc-clad exterior of the museum. The architect determined the pattern of the windows by drawing lines connecting the addresses of Germans and Jews on a map of the surrounding neighborhood. The Garden of Exile and Emigration, in front of the south facade of the museum. Forty-nine concrete columns stand at an incline, with trees planted inside. Forty-eight columns, filled with Berlin earth, stand for 1948, the year the nation of Israel was born. The 49th column, filled with earth from Jerusalem, stands for Berlin. Close-up of zinc-clad exterior of the museum, with intersecting window bands. The windows bear no relationship to the division of floors within the building. Window patterns. Libeskind derived the folded shape of the museum from many sources including lines on a map of Berlin connecting important figures in the Jewish cultural history of the city.
