Catalogue of Synagogue Textiles
English, format 22 x 31 cm, 376 pp., hardback in a case 500 full-colour illustrations of textile items (100 full-page) The Jewish Museum in Prague has published a de luxe catalogue of synagogue textiles from its collections for the exhibition „For Dignity and Adornment“ at the Imperial Stables, Prague Castle (March–June 2003). The catalogue texts and illustrations cover most of the textiles presented at the exhibition, as well as other select examples of the rich diversity of the Museum’s textile holdings, amounting to a thousand items. Moreover, they broaden the scope of information on individual groups of textiles by adding other striking examples. The wide variety of the collection is reflected in 500 full-colour illustrations.
The following, extensive, part of the catalogue covers synagogue textile items – curtains, Torah mantles, valances and covers. Catalogue entries also include the name of the donor and information on the place from where the item came.
The catalogue ends with a glossary of Hebrew terms and an index of names and localities.

"The Jewish Museum is a major American art museum, but also the largest Jewish museum in the Western hemisphere. Art is its primary medium of communication; yet the Museum's permanent exhibition presents, within an historical context, the multiple facets of Jewish identity as it has emerged during more than four millenia."
Current and Upcoming Exhibitions
At The Museum by Jason Wiggins
The Jewish Museum, located on the same avenue of culture as the Met Guggenheim and Cooper-Hewitt , has a design style different from many other museums. The towers and windows make the building look, ironically, like a Gothic church, much different from the buildings next door, which are mostly plain and square. There is more to the Jewish Museum than meets the eye; unlike many other museums on Museum Mile, the Jewish Museum takes up all of the floor of its building. The galleries are arranged in a circuitous style which allows for a lot of material to be put on display and makes floor plans a necessity. The permanent exhibit, located on the top two floors, presents the history of the Jewish people starting more than four thousand years ago. Since the exhibit is presented in chronological order, it makes the most sense to start at the beginning on the fourth floor and walk your way down through time.

  • Sunday, March 7 - Tuesday, June 27 100 Artists See God 100 Artists See God is a traveling exhibition organized by Independent Curators International. The guest co-curators, artists John Baldessari and Meg Cranston, are tackling the ever-challenging question of God in this exhibition. Baldessari and Cranston have invited 100 artists to respond to one of art's most enduring challenges: picturing the divine. Recent political developments have also led the public to examine the notion of "divine authority"- in the curators' words, "God is news." The artists selected for this exhibition are those whose work the curators know and admire, those who possess the sense of humor and audacity necessary for such a project, or artists who are "likely to surprise." An exhibition that goes beyond universal images of traditional faiths to offer individual interpretations of spirituality. The show was organized around the following questions: How contemporary artists see God? Ho and why might the point of view of artists reinforce-or stand in contrast to that of the general public? And what comfort or answers do we all seek in spiritual undertakings of varying kinds?

Containing over 40,000 exhibits and 100,000 books, the Jewish Museum has one of the most extensive collections of Judaic art and culture in the world. It is unique not only in terms of the number of its exhibits, but because they are from a single territory (Bohemia and Moravia), presenting an integrated picture of Jewish life and history in the region. The exhibitions of the museum are in six historic locations; the Maisel Synagogue, Spanish Synagogue, Pinkas Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery, Klausen Synagogue and the Ceremonial Hall. The Maisel Synagogue exhibition covers the history from the establishment of the first Jewish settlements to the period of emancipation in 1780, when reforms were prepared to improve the status of Jews. The exhibition in the Spanish Synagogue continues the history through to the present day. The Pinkas Synagogue is dedicated to the Bohemian and Moravian victims of the Holocaust, whose names are inscribed on the wall of the main nave of the synagogue and adjoining areas. The Old Jewish Cemetery was established in the first half of the fifteenth century, with the oldest surviving tombstone marking the grave of the poet and scholar Avigdor Karo who died in 1439. The cemetery was in use until 1787 and contains almost 12,000 tombstones, although many more burials took place on the site in successive layers.

The museum's collection includes Jewish ceremonial pieces, art, photographs and cultural artifacts, as well as works by Jewish artists like Marc Chagall and Frank Stella. The first thing to realize about the Jewish Museum is that it is not a Holocaust museum. There is only one small section of the permanent exhibition devoted to the Holocaust. According toa museum tour guide, the size of the exhibit, "The Shoah," reflects the small proportion of this period of time to the entire history of Judaism. The museum itself is quite large, covering four stories, but is manageable in an afternoon. The first two floors house the special exhibitions while the top two have the permanent exhibition and the Children's Gallery, which houses an exhibit for children and families on Jewish holidays.

The Manchester Jewish Museum tells the history of Jewish people in Manchester since the 18th century. It has a collection of photographs, documents and room settings which help visitors gain an impression of the people who arrived here during various periods of Jewish immigration - largely as a result of European wars and anti-Semitic pogroms. There are also telephone handset recordings of memories from earlier this century, made by Manchester inhabitants who lived through those times. The museum was originally a Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue which was built in 1874, but it has been a museum since 1984.
The downstairs synagogue has been fully restored to its original splendour with lavish Moorish décor and fine stained glass. Upstairs is a permanent exhibition of Manchester's Jewish history. An admission charge is payable. Groups should be booked in advance. Temporary exhibitions are frequently held, Educational Service, Guides, Shop, Car Parking, Evening visits by arrangement. Disabled access to ground floor only.

Germany Online Home: Arts: Visual Arts: Museums: Jewish Museum Jewish Museum The Jüdisches Museum is the most visited museum in Germany at present. The zinc-panelled Libeskind building is an unusual structure. It sets new architectural standards by creating a close relationship between the museums themes and its architecture. The richly symbolic building visualizes German-Jewish history and appeals its visitors senses and feelings. The tragic history of deported and murdered Jews and emigrants becomes as substantial as the vitality of contemporary Jewish life in Germany. The permanent exhibition offers visitors a journey through German-Jewish history and culture, from its earliest testimonies, through the Middle Ages and up to the present. Jewish contributions to German culture, politics, economics and science and other similar topics are presented along with everyday life of regular Jewish citizens, the history of persecution and the vacuum that was left behind, as well as the survival and new beginning of Jewish life in Germany. The Jewish Museum
SOPHIE CALLE Sophie Calle: The Eruv of Jerusalem will open at The Jewish Museum on June 20 and remain on view through October 17, 1999. This installation by French artist Sophie Calle, featuring photographs and texts, has been inspired by the concept of an eruv, a rabbinic prohibition against carrymg objects outside one's home on the Sabbath. Observant Jews erect an eruv, a boundary made of walls, wires, or neutral barriers that establishes a collective property transforming public to private space through which one can move as through within a home. For this work composed of 14 sites or "stations", Calle asked 14 inhabitants of Jerusalem - Israelis and Palestinians - each to take her to a public place they considered private. She then photographed the sites and transcribed interviews with the subjects, who revealed intimate stories about ordinary public places in Jerusalem that became special private spots for them, becoming conceptually transformed from natural sites to symbolic or sacred space.
Some of the stories are politically charged: a wall symbolizing separation between people; a bench on which an admirer kept vigil. Others hold deeply personal significance for the participants: a hotel in the old city named Casanova where two lovers met; a rock where a child used to play in a field that later became the grounds near the President's Residence. While the locations have no particular objective significance a triangle of light or a road because of a personal experience, they have acquired special meaning.
