Wisconsin Hillel's Saposnik, Pioneer of Jewish Literature
By MAX GROSS
FORWARD STAFF
Irving S. Saposnik, a former executive director of Hillel at the University of Wisconsin and one of the pioneer professors who brought the study of American Jewish literature into American higher education, died November 20 after a 13-month struggle with brain cancer. He was 67. Saposnik was still teaching a course, titled "Yiddish Literature in Translation" and organizing Yiddish events long after he was diagnosed with cancer. The couple moved to Madison, Wis., where Saposnik took a teaching post in English literature at the University of Wisconsin. At the university, Saposnik initiated one of the first American Jewish literature classes in the country. And although Saposnik was described by his family as extremely modest and mild-mannered, he threw himself into the campus tumult of the 1960s. According to his son, Bruce, Saposnik once gave his entire class As to keep them in school and out of Vietnam. Saposnik was one of the few professors to teach underground literature in his classes, something that did not help him when he appeared before a conservative and unfriendly tenure committee, but which made him a hero among the student body. "At the time you could find graffiti on the [Madison] campus that said 'Free Angela Davis!'" said Bruce Saposnik. "There was also 'Free Saposnik!'" After he was denied tenure, the Saposniks emigrated to Israel, where he taught English literature at the University of Haifa and the Kibbutz Seminar for Teachers for 10 years. During that period he was honored by the city of Nazareth for his efforts at bringing Arabs and Jews together.

April 1998 in Baltimore. AMERICAN JEWISH LITERATURE. Topic: Fact,
Fiction, and Drama: The Uses of History in American Jewish Literature.
The unique sensibilities of individual authors have transformed the
American Jewish historical experience into a body of literature that is
read world wide. This panel is a search for the historical impetus, the
included and excluded details, the transformation of facts into a mythic
narrative. An offshoot of the New Historicism, it rethinks the ways in
which the text is situated within the larger spectrum of discourses and
practices. It reconsiders the way human agents interact with social and linguistic systems.

As such, the field has availed itself of an extremely wide range of disciplines, including languages, linguistics, literature, textual analysis, ritual studies, sociology, art, and philosophy, among others. This diversity of methods fosters appreciation for the depths and richness of Jewish civilization by Jews and non-Jews alike. It constructs natural bridges for students across the university to enter into dialogue with Jewish culture and, through such conversations, to reflect on their own disciplines or traditions. Thus, Jewish Studies has historically attracted both students who are exploring their own identities and those who are seeking to learn more about others.

Abraham Cahan
Abraham Cahan has been described as the single most influential personality in the cultural life of well over two million Jewish immigrants and their families during his lifetime. As a journalist and writer, his unique ability to mediate among the various sensibilities and languages of the Lower East Side in New York City placed him at the center of American Jewish culture and Jewish writing. His major fictional works, Yekl (1896) and The Rise of David Levinsky (1917), are widely recognized as classic accounts of the immigrant experience of Americanization.
Born in Podberezy, Russia, Cahan was educated at traditional Jewish cheders and also studied at the Vilna Teachers Institute, a Russian government school for Jewish teachers. After graduating in 1881, he began teaching and at the same time became deeply involved in radical, underground anti-czarist activities. Forced to flee, he joined a group of immigrants bound for America and arrived in Philadelphia on June 5, 1882. The next day he reached New York, where his religious training proved useless and secular success beckoned. In 1890 he became editor of the weekly Arbeiter Zeitung

Magic Bibliographies and Resources
John-Gabriel Bodard
These bibliographies so far contain only a few works which I have consulted for my PhD research into ancient Greek perceptions of magic. The content inevitably reflects my interests (particularly archaic and classical Greek literary sources). A comprehensive bibliography of magic (even ancient magic) would in any case be prohibitive. Feel free to suggest additions, etc. Please let me know if you find this of any use. In case you have found this page while looking for something else, I have included links to other online magic resources. You are visitor number to my site since its conception in 1996. This whole site will soon be restructured to make it simpler, more attractive and hopefully more useful (and so it will involve less work to keep it updated). The current change of face of this page is the first step. The bibliographies are currently still in their unwieldy form, as listed below. There is a Text-Only Version of the full bibliography in a single document; this is more up-to-date than any of the subdivided bibliographies. The following sub-sections, divided into topics for for convenience, remain accessible but are no longer updated pending the restructure of the site (which will happen when I have more time):

Interview with Avner Peretz, director of the Institute of Ladino in the Jerusalem suburb of Maale Adumim. Discusses his efforts to save the literature, proverbs, and oral traditions before they disappear.

Ladino - a language destined to be lost?
"THE RACE IS ON to save the treasures of Ladino." This is the way Avner Peretz, Director of the Institute of Ladino in the Jerusalem suburb of Maale Adumim described his efforts to record the the Sephardic equivalent of Yiddish before much of it vanishes. In this spirit Peretz, a sixth generation Jerusalemite of Turkish background, has been collecting books, newspapers, and manuscripts. And he has not stopped there. He has also made a concerted effort to document the Ladino oral tradition. When the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, they took their language with them. In the Balkans and Turkey it was called Ladino, a corruption of the word "Latin" used to distinguish it from Turkish. In Tangier and Tetuan in Spanish Morocco it was called "Haquitiya." The classic of Ladino Literature is clearly Me-am Lo'ez , a monumental work of biblical commentary and talmudic tradition written in systematic form for the layman. In 1730 Rabbi Yaakov Culi published the initial volume, the first part of Exodus, in Constantinople; it was not until more than a century and a half later and more than a half dozen authors that the opus was finally completed. Today Me-am Lo-ez is a popular set in Hebrew, and it is making inroads into the market of English-speaking Jews, where it has appeared as
