Possibly literature is one of the hardest categories to define what's Jewish. Is Jewish literature simply books by Jewish authors? About Jewish subjects, no matter who the author? What if the characters are identifiably Jewish but don't live very Jewishly? Oh, well. It's not easy to be a Jew!

A Simple Story (Library of Modern Jewish Literature) > Customer Review #1: A novel for some, a trial for others..

S.Y Agnons "A Simple Story" tells us of a bygone era, and of rich Jewish tradition. Set in early 1900s Austria-Hungary, this is the story of an oprhan who is taken in by her cousins, one of whom eventually falls in love with her. But it is not to be, as the boys mother sets him up with a superficial, but pretty Jewish girl. You can guess how he reacts, but youll never guess how it ends. A decided anti-romance, it stresses duty and fidelity over our romantic notions of love. Interesting sequence where the young man goes nuts and is put into a mental hospital. Its interesting how he recovers.

Exploring Jewish Literature of the Second Temple Period: A Guide for New Testament Students (Christian Classics Bible Studies) > Customer Review #1: An excellent place to start

Larry Helyer does an excellent job of introducing most of the relevent literature of the Second Temple period and its general influence on the writers of the New Testament and the Early Church. Excellent review or introduction depending on your background. I think this should be mandatory reading for every pastor and bible student. Well written with many chapter breaks to keep the organization of this large volume. This is the context of the New Testament that most Christians are not even aware exists. I have already recommended this texts to many people.

Honoring Jewish Literature
By DEBORAH HIRSCH
It’s like the Pulitzer Prize of the Jewish literary community. The National Jewish Book Awards have been honoring notable works for more than 50 years, gaining status as a mark of excellence in both secular and religious communities. But the awards’ special place in the Jewish community holds a little extra significance for some of those who organize and receive them. “The biggest thing is to get that kind of recognition from your peers and your community,” says Samuel G. Freedman, 47, a former New York Times reporter and journalism professor at Columbia University who won the 2000 nonfiction award for Jew vs. Jew: The Struggle for the Soul of American Jewry This year’s 53rd annual awards reception will be held in December at the Center for Jewish History in New York. Though the awards officially started in 1948, their origins stem from a Jewish book week that began in the mid ’20s. The week grew into a month, held in the springtime to coincide with the Jewish scholar’s holiday, Lag B’omer. By the early ’40s the book month was shifted closer to the secular book-buying season in the fall, and now usually takes place one month before Hanukah. “The goal of the awards is to heighten awareness of the best books on Jewish topics each year,” says Carolyn Starman Hessel, director of the Jewish Book Council, which administrates the awards.

Today it goes under names such as apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, Josephus and Philo, apocalyptic literature and the Dead Sea Scrolls, Mishnah and targums. It is an engrossing subject in and of itself, but for students of the New Testament it offers an invaluable context for understanding the words and actions of Jesus as well as the conversion and thinking of Paul. Exploring Jewish Literature of the Second Temple Period is an introduction to this literature that places it within its historical context. Riding the explosive growth of knowledge of this period, Larry Helyer guides students to the heart of the matter. What were the pressures and realities, the questions and dreams that nurtured and provoked these written expressions? And how does this literature throw light on the text of the New Testament and origins of Christianity?

60. Jewish Literature Of The Greco-Roman Age
jewish literature of the GrecoRoman Age. Hellenistic jewish literature, with its varying notions of a Messiah figure, had no corner on that market.
http://imp.lss.wisc.edu/~rltroxel/JHL/Lect4.htm
Jewish Literature of the Greco-Roman Age Lecture 4: Hellenism We have arrived at the Hellenistic era ushered in by the conquests of Alexander the Great. Last session I concluded by summarizing how the Ptolemaic rulers, in Egypt, differed from the Seleucid rulers to their north and east by how they treated those under their rule. I noted that the Ptolemies sought to keep the native Egyptians under their control by denying them access to the economic and social advantages of Ptolemaic society, even though they allowed Greeks and others - including some Jews - access to those benefits. The Seleucids, on the other hand, generally extended social and economic advantages to all their subjects, choosing to exercise control by luring them into adopting the Hellenistic way of life, thus becoming an integral part of the larger world. The largest prize to be gained by those attracted to such benefits was the right to become a city. In Hellenistic culture, a city meant more than simply having a planning commission and a public works department. The city, or Polis, especially as developed in 5th century Athens, was a community of citizens that lived according to a set of agreed-upon laws and ruled themselves through the public assembly.
