Old Testament:
Jewish Literature
Ancient Jewish writers are another important source. The two major ones are Josephus and Philo. There are also pseudepigrapha writings, apocryphal writings, and Rabbinic literature.
Josephus
Josephus Flavius was born about 37 AD in Jerusalem. He was a general in Galilee in the Judean army in 67-68 AD. He went over to the Roman army to avoid death. He became a Roman prisoner and interpreter for the Roman army. He wrote The Jewish War around 75 AD, Jewish Antiquities in 93 AD, Against Apion , and The Life around 95 AD. In Jewish Antiquities Josephus starts from Genesis chapter one to explain the history of the Jews to his present time. He offers interesting insight on how the Jews understood Genesis around the time of Christ and his apostles.
Philo
Philo the Jew or Philo of Alexandria lived from about 20 BC to about 50 AD. He came from a wealth prominent family in Alexandria, Egypt. He was well educated. His brother Alexander held various offices for Rome. Alexander's son Marcus, Philo's nephew married Bernice, the daughter of Herod Agrippa I. Bernice is mentioned in Acts 25:13, 23; 26:30. Alexander's other son Tiberius became procurator of Judaea from 46 to 48 AD. Philo is important in understanding first century AD Hellenistic Judaism and NT writings of Paul, John (logos) and Hebrews (shadow; see Williamson 1970; Attridge 1989, 29). Philo is considered to be a Middle Platonist (Philo 1993). He is also know for his allegorical interpretations. Philo wrote

JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS

ABOUT
A Discussion Program for Junior High and High School Students In a project funded by a grant from the AVI CHAI Foundation, the Great Books Foundation is working with prominent Jewish scholars in the fields of literature, history, philosophy, and education to create a powerful new program to help Jewish youth explore the roots of Judaism in literature. The reading and discussion program will engage junior and senior high school Jewish students in discussions of timeless themes such as the nature of the Jewish identity and the relationship between Judaism and the modern world. A pilot of proposed texts for the Great Books Jewish Literature Program was conducted in early 1999. The program will be published in May 2000. While many Jewish schools already use the regular Great Books programs, this is the first time a Jewish Great Books program will be available. Several nationally renowned Jewish educators and scholars have assisted in the text selection process, and many prominent national organizations involved in Jewish education have provided assistance, counsel, and support. The program will include 12-15 selections, including examples of Biblical narrative and poetry, literature of classic rabbinical Judaism, philosophical literature of the medieval and post-medieval periods, and outstanding modern and contemporary Jewish literature in philosophy, religion, and fiction. The program will feature Shared Inquiry, the Great Books model of text-based, peer-led discussion. The Great Books Foundation will train teachers, youth group leaders, parents, and others to be discussion leaders in two-day seminars that take place nationwide throughout the year. The Great Books Foundation will also work with Jewish federations, central agencies for Jewish education, JCCs, day schools, congregational and community supplementary schools, youth groups, and other local community organizations to establish and support reading and discussion groups in numerous venues throughout the United States.

Judaism
Summer, 2002 by Arnold J. Band
THE PUBLICATION OF JAN ASSMANN'S MOSES THE EGYPTIAN (1997) has provided the grounds for a revitalization of the study of images of Moses in subsequent culture and, more specifically, the images of Moses in Modern Jewish Literature. (1) The book's subtitle, The Memory of Egypt in Western Monotheism, encapsulates Assmann's two major concerns: first, how the memory of Egypt has affected western monotheism and much of western culture; second, the theoretical relationship between history and memory, or, more precisely, the memory of history, formulated by Assmann in a coinage of his own: Mnemohistory. Energizing his investigation is another, more latent topic: the history of antisemitism which Assmann, a German reared in post-Nazi Germany, struggles to understand. Naftali Hertz Wessely and Moses Wessely's epic poem on Moses, Shire Tiferet, shares the hybridity of his above-mentioned publications. (3) At first, the narration of the Moses narrative in poetic form does not seem to break new ideological ground. Moses is still the great hero of the Exodus and Sinai; Pharaoh is still portrayed as the despicable enemy, set on persecuting the Jews; one still sees an Egypt of the Hebrew Bible without any of the new historical knowledge already available in Germany at that period. (4) And yet, there is much new here, both in the verse narration and in the specific characterization of Moses.
