On Page 2 of "Can't Believe It's Kosher" by Milwaukee's Congregation Beth Israel Sisterhood, the artist, Cindy Cooper, tells the reader about its design: "The floating figures may bring to mind the playfulness of Marc Chagall. I tried to convey a dreamy lightness of spirit which is the heart and soul of a warm and busy kitchen...Cooking should make us jump, giggle and sigh with contentedness. Recipes will become wishes fulfilled for your family. Eat in good health and most important of all, float." Looking through the recipes, I had a negative response to the frequent use of canned produce, but then I remembered that Wisconsin is a long way from California. This is the third cookbook that the sisterhood has produced, so members are not newcomers to the rigors of recipe testing that make a cookbook work. The gazpacho recipe, made with buttermilk, is a fine first course for summer dairy meals, particularly with the abundance of tomatoes and fresh produce that will soon be available at farmers' markets and home gardens. The sole is a pareve recipe flavored with lemon juice and Dijon mustard.

I was VERY disappointed with this book. I was expecting a CRAFTY kitchen book for childen based on the pictures on the front cover. This book primarily consists of traditional recipes for the holidays but gives instructions such as child mixes this.. adult stirs that. Example of receipes include: grape juice, hallah, chicken soup, matzah balls, pot roast, peeling a pamagranet, etc. There is nothing unique or special about these recipes. If you are buying it for your children- dont. and if you are buying it for the recipes- dont. There are many other better Jewish holiday cookbooks out there to choose from.
