Jewish Cooking
Memories of Real Jewish Cooking from Lloyd Rubin Where is that cooking now? I'm talking about the lack of good old, down-home Jewish cooking in our homes. I am taking it upon myself to help out all you frantic housewives out there, with wonderful menus that will lead your children to a healthy, happy, and loving family unit as I knew it in my childhood. Next, go out and buy a four-foot-long carp with huge whiskers. Fill your bathtub with water and let the fish swim in it for several days. In the meantime, roll up your Berber broadloom, and remove it from the living room, polish the hardwood floors, cover them in newspaper, cover your couch in clear plastic, or floral slip covers, and don't let anyone in your living room again .unless they are company.' Now you're a real "BALABUSTA," which is a term of respect used for an efficient Jewish housewife, and the essence of your universe is in the kitchen. So get out your wooden matches, light the pilot light, get out the volgar holtz (wooden bowl), hock the tzibbeles (onions) and knubble (garlic), and we're Jewish again. Before we start, however, there are some variations in ingredients because of the various types of Jewish taste (Polack, Litvack and Gallicianer).

Adventures in Jewish Cooking By Jeffrey Nathan Adventures in Jewish Cooking
Author: Jeffrey Nathan Publisher: Clarkson Potter, Random House, 2002, hardcover, $32.50 USD
Chef Jeffrey Nathan strikes again. First we enjoyed Abigail's, his wonderful Manhattan restaurant. Then we learned techniques from his PBS cooking show currently broadcast in Israel on YES. Now, here is the book.
Adventures in Jewish Cooking is a little of all the best of Jeffrey Nathan, right on your bookshelf whenever you need him.
Jeffrey Nathan has pioneered the concept "New Jewish Cuisine," an updated fresh version of kosher cooking. Consider Stuffed Cabbage, this time made with Sweet and Sour Cranberry Sauce. Sacrilege? Just try it.
Several of the recipes in the book come from Abigail's restaurant. Abigails, says Jeffrey Nathan, was designed "…not as a kosher restaurant but as a great restaurant that just happens to be kosher." The recipe for Abigail's Balsamic Vinaigrette salad dressing, for example, is now mine. Simple enough, it contains just the ingredients that my salad dressing was missing. Chocolate Mousse Flowerpots, the signature dessert at Abigails, appears here with detailed instructions and photos. Not your standard Eastern European concept, this dessert is served in small terra-cotta pots topped with "dirt" made from cookie crumbs.

Jewish Cooking for Dummies > Customer Review #1: Good Cookin

If youve never had to make homemade Challah before (or you dont even know what that is) and always wanted to learn how, this the book for you. Jewish Cooking for Dummies is the perfect book for the novice Jewish chef. It has recipes for every major holiday, and some not so major ones, with recipes for every day of the week. Faye Levy, who has previously written other books on Jewish cooking, delivers again with a well thought out book. There are tips for keeping kosher, for substitutions, for making things faster. Its everything you need if youre just starting out in the Jewish kitchen or in a kitchen in general. The only real complaint I have is that the recipes are very basic and that there arent enough to go around. Also, many to the recipes take longer to make than listed in the book, especially when you first start making them. You gradually improve, but plan a little bit of a cushion into your work time.

Recipe Archive Succulent Sukkot Recipes by Judy Bart Kancigor, courtesy of the Jewish Journal In Sicily, ingesting eggplant was once thought to lead to insanity. What a difference a decade makes. In fall 1992, my husband and I visited Israel during what now seems such innocent times. Only once did our tour guide announce a change in itinerary when a particular site was deemed unsafe. We visited friends in Jerusalem and sat leisurely sipping cafe hafuch in front of a cafe on Ben Yehuda Street, which I later recognized on Fox News reduced to bloodied shards. We even rode a city bus into Jaffa one day, soaking up "local color," with nothing on our minds but shopping. We could not have picked a better season to be there. Leaving Los Angeles the day after Yom Kippur, we found Jerusalem bustling with preparations for Sukkot. The terrace of every apartment sported a sukkah, and we ate breakfast each day under fruit-laden branches, our lavish Israeli buffet feast mirrored in the sukkah above. Truly we had reached the Promised Land at its most lush and bountiful season. Sukkot, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, is the harvest festival mentioned in the Torah (Leviticus 23:34-39). Immediately following the fast of Yom Kippur, Jews the world over begin constructing sukkot in preparation for the joyous feast that begins four days later.
